MATT SORUM Says New METALLICA Songs Are 'Sick' And 'Crazy Fast' With Lots Of 'Tempo Changes'
- July 25, 2007
|
|
METALLICA is hard at work on its next album with producer Rick Rubin, and at least one person outside the band has heard the songs: VELVET REVOLVER drummer Matt Sorum. He tells RollingStone.com, " Lars [ Ulrich, METALLICA drummer] is a good friend of mine. He played me the demos from San Francisco, and I turned and looked at him and I said, 'Master that shit and put it out.' It's ridiculous. The demos were sick. Eight-minute songs, all these tempo changes, crazy fast. It's like, 'Dude, don't get slower when you get older, but don't get faster!? How are you gonna play this live?' And then me and Lars were out partying all night, and he had to go in the studio the next day and do this stupid like nine- or ten-minute song, and I was laughing at him — because he played me the demo of it, and it was [sings really fast drum part], so fast. I called him, and said, 'Dude, how are you feeling?' He was like, 'Dude, I'm hurting.' They're cutting everything to tape, no fuckin' ProTools — live, no clicks. Bitchin'. I dig it. I'm really excited for them."

What I want, more than a bunch of fast songs, is an album where all the songs aren't the same. St. Anger had fast songs, some of them even decent. Problem is, they all felt the same which made the album get boring if you listened to it all the way through. The last few Metallica albums containing original material seemed to have a set formula for a song to follow, and then every single track followed that formula. Metallica needs an album that has an ebb and flow to it, something that keeps you listening all the way through and not knowing what the next song is going to sound like.

Tape is fine. No Pro-Tools - possible, if they practice everyday 5 hours a day at least. And even then it might not sound very tight. Their "live" performances usually does not "cut it" under scrutiny as compared to the studio versions. They have always used to edit their music heavily in the studio, up to "Metallica" album (their most successful catalogue). By far, they'd spend more time on editing/production than on playing the actual songs... and that's what made them stand out from the rest in terms of quality up until 90's.
But no click track? Oh my... I'm a bit worried now. I mean - even "...And Justice For All" is recorded seemingly without the click, but they worked on the songs for years, perfecting it and cut the tape unceremoniously to achieve that "tight" effect.

They practiced the songs on "...And Justice For All" for years. How long it took them to actually record - 8 weeks? Possible. I do not know (I am not their manager). However, I do strongly believe that even if it took them to record the actual songs a couple of weeks - they spent months on editing/pre-post production (if not years).

Alot of the songs on St Anger had tempo changes and were fast.
That said, I believe that this time around Metallica is gonna copy Trivium (what an irony) rather than System of a Down.
Ok, I'm only kidding, but wouldn't that be funny!

Btw, anyone ever notice the similarity to the Cult's Electric and Danzig's self titled. I never heard the Cult's album until recently, and the similarities are startling at times.

Sounds good...
Of course this is also coming from Matt Sorum's opinions which is like getting getting war opinions from George Bush, not quite accurate.
Matt Sorum has 2 different tempo changes in his whole career of drumming so adding a 3rd or 4th tempo change, of course he would shit himself. Not to mention he only has 1 drum fill for every song. His opinion is shit. Now if someone with some talent said something like that, it would be incredible.

Matt is not a fast drummer and I'm gonna stereotype him as not a fan of Nile or anything that is actually fast. I therefore have to conclude that Matt's version of "Fast" is anything slightly faster than Gun's N Roses and or anything not slower than Velvet Revolver.

If they did a heavy and faster album earlier instead of after Megadeth did 2 faster and heavy albums. And with Testament returning with a new CD and how much the fans love the new Megadeth with thrash and solos and playing classic thrash set lists... It makes me wonder are they really doing it for themselves or for us fans?
Or they just doing it for their own egos so they can once again laugh in Dave's face and stay on top of all the other great thrash bands?
... Plus with alot of the new reactions of the past Metallica albums and The newest Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill albums... true Metal heads seem to be jumping to the other sides. If this album was as shitty as St. Anger we all know the next album they do after that one would not have fans so eager to get and hear VS the wonder and hopes of the next Megadeth Album in 2008/2009.
The Big Four as of now should be:
Testament Megadeth Exodus Overkill

Some people on here are already crying because they think they'll be proven wrong if Metallica go back to the older style. Already saying they're doing it because Megadeth got heavier and Testament are writing a new heavy record. I hate to break the news, both those bands (whom I love) tried to follow in the Black album footsteps back in the 90's. Megadeth, well, theirs is obvious, and Testament with The Ritual (shorter, more mid-tempo tunes). Both hoping for radio play.

I'm Metallica fan for over 20 years now, but the thrill is gone, years pased, and I think that this new cd will be the real selout". Thats why they made all those albums they did, cuz they wanted to do them, cuz that was the type off music they wanted to do, you cant get much more "real" than that in the music world. Oh, and how about waiting to the new album comes out before you judge it? Metallica still rules, if you had seen them live this year then you would know that.

You're perfectly right - and both albums, Countdown To Extinction and The Ritual, are better than the black album.
As for Matt Sorum: Well, as soon as Tomas Haake, Bobby Jarzombek and Mike Portnoy start to praise the new "'tallica" demos and Lars' drumming, I'll get my hopes up. But Ulrich recording in the studio without a click track sounds like a bad idea, considering his live performances... Lars Ulrich is no Nicko McBrain.

Matt is probably just a nice guy who's talking about his famous friend's new work. The new material could be anything and he'd say the same thing, "It's sick" It's probably an over-hyped dissapointment for fans who'd like to see a band reattain it's former glory as an intelligent Thrash band. Instead, we will probably hear misdirected, corny sounding stuff.

Recall that James Hetfield has pretty much disowned St Anger at this point (recent interviews), and the whole band has hinted at regrets of their relationship with Bob Rock.
Not much, but may be enough to go on.
Rick Rubin helped produce some of the best albums ever recorded, Danzig and Slayer

I don't think they regret the relationship they had with Bob Rock,I do think they're starting to understand that they stuck with him too long and they should've changed sooner.
I'm a Metallica fan to the bones and honestly,I think this album is going to be a huge let down for those expecting it to be as they're claiming and now Matt Sorum about it being this return to their roots.
If this album doesn't deliver I'm preparing to put my Metallica hat as far as new material goes on the shelf, not to say I'd refuse to see them live but as far as new material I don't see myself bothering to get something that's at the very least better than what they've done since Load (which is better than Black IMO)
I hope this album is a wake up call to Metallica.

Well, my personal taste is that I am enthralled by the first four Danzig albums. I mean, if it weren't for Rubin, Danzig wouldn't be a household name. Samhain and Misfits were big mind you, but Rubin gave him that extra push to become such a good singer. Just listen to "You and Me" from Less Than Zero and compare it to Samhain's November Coming Fire. Night and day difference vocal quality wise (Though I love both).
I have quite an open mind already, I just consider Rubin special for those first four Danzig albums, and everyone worships Reign In Blood (though Ironically I prefer Hell Awaits).
I have hope that Metallica are actually doing what they said they were.
But, yeah they said that before Saint Anger, and that had many long songs as well.
I think that James (as seen on Some Kind of Monster) considered Bob Rock to be part of the "business" side of things, and to be loose of him (he didn't seem to favor him as much recently) might free the band to go back to their roots. We all know that Rubin has reinstigated the careers of many. Lets hope that he goes back to his old days as a metal producer (though not back to his hip hop days hopefully) and produces a quality product with Metallica.
Bob Rock did a fine job with the Black Album (Though its in essence a sell out) but the guys didn't seem to happy with his job on Saint Anger (Referencing James and Kirk interviews the past couple of months).
The only thing that worries me is, these guys live in a bubble, and does "going back to your roots" only mean you go back to the NWOBHM roots and not to the progress thats been made in metal since then?
It could very well be more thrashy, but I would almost hope that it WAS UPDATED in a certain respect with more neo classical flourishes or indeed the phrygian influence Kirk spoke about. Back to the Euro metal thing again, like they got into on Ride the Lightning, but UPDATED.
Kind of like Tempo of the Damned and Enemy of God, but not like United Abominations (sorry guys).
And if they're actually "progressive" I'll be surprised, but in a "Justice" way, that'd be great.
I have a feeling its going to be like Queensryche's Operation Mindecrime II, still sounding too modern (in a more lame way) but having a few flourishes from the past. I hope not, I pray not, but then again, I'd rather go listen to Kreator or even some other underground thrash bands nowadays anyway.

Sounds cool. Screw you guys for turning your backs on them. I'm sorry, but MOP and AJFA, well...That will never, ever happen again. Its not gonna. So just take what you get. Personally, I thought that some tracks on St.Anger were fine. Frantic was pretty damn cool if you ask me. Quit bitching and start LISTENING!

They need to release one damn song, hopefully a good one. Waiting is becoming lame quickly.
