SLAYER's TOM ARAYA: 'I Raise Cows For Personal Consumption' - July 30, 2007
Miami New Times recently conducted an interview with SLAYER lead vocalist and bass player Tom Araya. The brief question-and-answer session follows:

Miami New Times: How does it feel to be opening for MARILYN MANSON?

Araya: I don't have any problems with it. We really don't have a preference. If we're coheadlining and the other band prefers to close, we say, "Sure, if you want to follow us, that's fine." We have no arguments. All we want to do is play, and we are the best, period. So you better be fucking good. I know of MANSON; I'm familiar with some of his material. It should be an interesting lineup.

Miami New Times: Will Dave Lombardo be drumming on this tour?

Araya: Yeah. I don't understand why people would think any different.

Miami New Times: Well, he left SLAYER in 1987, returned in 1992, left again....

Araya: He does other things. One of the stipulations is that he can do other stuff, but when it comes to SLAYER, he gives 100 percent. I think that some of his other projects are really cool. I like FANTÔMAS [with Mike Patton and Buzz Osborne].

Miami New Times: A lot of people consider SLAYER a satanic band.

Araya: Yeah.

Miami New Times: The rumor for a while has been that you are actually a born-again Christian.

Araya: [Manic laughter] First off, I was born once [more laughter]. When you use the term born-again, it is because you found something that you lost, right? I haven't lost anything. I was born and raised Catholic, so it's in my blood. I don't go to church.... I was born and raised Catholic, which is about the extent of my religion. My parents made one request, that I have my first Holy Communion.

Miami New Times: You had a Holy Communion?

Araya: Believe it or not, I had my first Holy Communion. I am not an atheist; I believe in God. But my religion ends there. I have my own personal belief system that is so strong it allows me to do what I do. I don't have to worry about going to Hell because of SLAYER, you know? Everyone has a personal belief system and believes in life somehow.

Miami New Times: Do you recommend any books that might help us understand Tom Araya's belief system?

Araya: [Laughter] I recommend anybody go to a bookstore, go down the self-help or new-age section, and just walk those aisles. See what book jumps out at you; there's a good chance it's a book you need in your life. That's basically how I find the books that I read. I just walk down the aisle, look at titles, glance at covers. You just happen to pick one up.... If it does something for you, great; if not, you just keep looking.

Miami New Times: You frequent the new-age section?

Araya: I like anything that captures my attention: new-age, religion, philosophy. True crime books are my favorite; there are a lot of brutal ones. They already have new books about that Virginia Tech dude.... He outdid himself — sort of a re-enactment of what happened at Columbine a few years ago.

Miami New Times: What are your hobbies?

Araya: Besides SLAYER, which is a full-time job, I raise animals. I have a ranch in Texas. My wife takes care of the animals when I'm on tour. When I get home, I become a ranch hand. I have cows, chickens, dogs, pigs, ducks....

Miami New Times: Tom Araya's farm?

Araya: I raise the cows for personal consumption. I just started a herd of nine cows. These are meat cows to be eaten, not to be milked.

Miami New Times: Are you going to slaughter these cows yourself?

Araya: No. It takes a lot of work and I am not prepared for that. I don't have a slaughterhouse.

Miami New Times: Do you wear a cowboy hat?

Araya: Not yet [laughter].

Miami New Times: What type of music do you listen to?

Araya: My favorite records would surprise people. I love "Graceland" by PAUL SIMON. I am a huge fan of THE BEATLES. I like THE EAGLES, CAT STEVENS. I grew up listening to Sixties music: JANIS JOPLIN, HENDRIX, THE DOORS, YES, THE WHO. I grew up listening to all that shit. I listen to everything, even the great sounds of the Seventies. Bands like BOSTON and VAN HALEN. That was when metal started getting heavy.

Hanneman And King have written most of the lyrics over the years...
And Those Lyrics are Nothing Without Tom Singing them...
I've always felt that Tom Has One of the Best Metal Voices Ever.. Gruff and Raspy.. With out death grunts... (Don't get me Wrong I love the guttural lyrics... Of Bands like, Autopsy, Behemoth, Nile, Obituary)... But Tom's singing is a Huge Part of Slayer's Mighty Reign.. And Who gives a sh!t,,,... If he is In the cult of Christ or the Cult of Cthulhu... I'm Sick of hearing about this.. A very Old, and lame Question.. by the Interviewer IMHO

"I thought he is much more smarter" shows less intelligence :)

Tom is the bright one, if you meet him it will become clear. Tom is bright and chatty, Jeff is stoned and incoherent, Kerry is gobby and egostistical, and - well Dave wasn't in the band at the time, but he's a great drummer! :)

Tom may've been taking the piss out of the interviewer - there were some pretty stupid questions there and he does like to enjoy himself. His stage banter is hilarious. Having said that I've not seen them for quite a long time.

So With that said, Listen, you are not a cud eater.. (I hope).. do you have a stomach with four compartments enabling you to chew on your tofu all over again? True herbivores have to spend most of the day eating leaves just to keep their strength up (leaves and twigs are not known for there nutrition) And I don't Know about you But I am Not a Sloth or a koala Bear, Although I bet Both Would Taste Great If Cooked Properly.. Hey deadboy, the fact is that there is protien in every single thing you could eat. Meat based diets contain way too much protein. Your body only needs a certain amount of protein to function at optimum. The excess protein in your system ends up leeching bone mass, which is why osteoperosis is so prevalent in the elderly. The whole "vegetarians could never get enough protein" argument is totally wrong.

I don't care if you want to eat meat. That's fine. I don't understand why everyone gets so defensive when vegetarians speak and feel the need to proclaim their love for meat. Whatever. Who cares? The fact is that if we weren't wasting soooo many resources raising cows, the grains we're wasting would be able to feed the entire world a few times over. It's undfortunate that, as a society, we're hooked on meat, but that's not going to change. People are too lazy.

I'm sick of vegans/vegetarians acting like they're so much more intelligent and elitist because they don't eat meat... most of them not realizing the fact that they act so snobby and preachy (yes, that's exactly what they tend to do) is the main reason why people can't stand most of them, and not the belief thing. I respect everyone's beliefs but whenever you start getting preachy/know-it-all/elitist like anyone that disagrees with you is wrong... that's where I draw the line. There are obvious exceptions, of course... but this behaviour is just disgraceful.

I guess I just have to laugh at the meat eaters who claim that "vegetarians are 'snobby' and 'preachy.'" I have to listen to ignorant meat-eater shit all the time. If I just MENTION I'm a vegetarian, I get a bunch of meat eaters cramming their "You want to control my life" bullshit down my throat. I don't want to control your life. No vegetarian does. But you all act like complete fucking defensive idiots. If you want to die of heart disease and colon cancer because of your ignorant diet, be my fucking guest. I couldn't care less. The facts and studies support my diet. I really don't care what you think about that.

It's like the religious right and their supposed "culture war." If there's a war, who's winning?! It sure as hell ain't MY side, because I get Jesus crammed down my throat on a daily basis through society's biased bullshit.

I think all of you ignorant, suburban, uneducated whiners need more than a little bit of perspective.

See... there you go again... you start calling people idiots... you start slinging mud because you feel like you're superior because you don't eat meat... i'm not advocating eating meat... sure i eat it on occasion (oddly enough not nearly as much as i eat non-meat products). I say you are snobby and preachy because your behavior shows that to be the case. Laugh all you want... but this is not about the subject of to meat or not to meat... this is about the subject of a general attitude i've observed. Sure there are meat-heads out there who are arguing simply in the defense of a meat-intensive diet and are going on the same way as meat-elitists... but i have not seen this nearly to the extent of vegan/vegetarians... i have this friend who recently became vegan and ever since there's always been this pretty much condescending tone in his voice about everything. Now I'm not saying by any means that being a vegetarian/vegan is bad... just don't act like everyone who doesn't agree with you is a low life moron. And there is one thing we can both agree on... an all-meat diet is bad. But one thing we won't agree on is moderation between the two is a good thing.

"In conclusion, we see that human beings have the gastrointestinal tract structure of a “committed” herbivore. Humankind does not show the mixed structural features one expects and finds in anatomical omnivores such as bears and raccoons. Thus, from comparing the gastrointestinal tract of humans to that of carnivores, herbivores and omnivores we must conclude that humankind's GI tract is designed for a purely plant-food diet."

This is completely incorrect. Humans have appendixes. The appendix contains bacteria which break down cellulose (plant fibre) in the colon which are how cellulose is broken down. Animals like rabbits have appendixes too, and they have bacteria which do just this. In humans, the bacteria is not present because humans use animal meat for energy along with ground wheat and other plant products that have their cellulose walls broken down. We are quite clearly adapted for omnivore purposes.

Talking about our mouth shapes is also irrelevant. Wild dogs and Polar bears catch prey with their teeth, whilst animals like us use tools, like Chimps, which also are omnivores (they eat ants).
