METALLICA's ULRICH: We Made 'Some Kind Of Monster' Movie To Piss KERRY KING Off
- July 31, 2007
|
|
Britain's Metal Hammer magazine ( web site) recently conducted an exlusive interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich about the progress of the recording sessions for the group's new album, among other topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow: Metal Hammer: How easy was it to can Bob Rock? Lars: [Frowning]: "That's not a term I'd like to use. We'd been making records together for almost 20 years. That's as creative a relationship as you can come up with in music, film...just about anything. But it had got to a point where we would both finish each other's sentences. We needed to look somewhere else for our own sanity, survival and fulfillment." Metal Hammer: Kirk [ Hammett] has said that although this is METALLICA's 11th studio album. It feels like the band's sixth. Does a part of you consider "St. Anger" was a mistake? Lars: "Not at all. The mistake was the white leather jacket [worn in the drummer's infamous rock star phase, circa a stadiom tour with GUNS N' ROSES in 1992]. The Napster dispute wasn't a mistake, but it caught us off guard. The music has always been pure. It was the right thing to have done in 2003. That said, I listened to it a couple of months ago and it's a difficult record. I can hear that. But when I finished it, it made me do the same kind of backflips as all the other records." Metal Hammer: You must've known that after the whole "Some Kind of Monster" thing, some people — including Kerry King [of SLAYER] who called you "fragile old men" — would never take the band seriously again. Lars: "Oh listen, the reason we did that movie was to piss Kerry King off. Being the source of his amusement, that's great!" Metal Hammer: As fascinating as it looked on screen, wouldn't it have been better to keep those things behind closed doors? Lars: "There's certainly an argument for that. But right from day one, METALLICA has always been about the relationship with the fans. Unlike bands like LED ZEPPELIN who tried to keep things mystical, we've gone out of our way to be as accesible as possible. Our roots are alot more punk than that. 'Some Kind of Monster' was the logical conclusion of that mindset". Metal Hammer: Then presumably you disagree with Kerry's ageist comments? Lars: "Of course I do. If he hated 'Some Kind of Monster' that's the only stamp of approval that I need". Metal Hammer: Does it feel like you owe anything to people who loved METALLICA in the early days but haven't liked too much of the band's music since the "Black Album?" Lars: "Um, no. Not at all. I've a responsibility to my kids and to my lady to be a good partner. Also to myself, to create music that's honest, real and gets all three inches of my dick hard. Of course it's great to have as many people along for the ride as possibe. But when we put acoustic guitar into 'Fade To Black' 200 years ago, that's when the moaning started. We realized those people would always be around whatever we did. So, basically, we stopped trying to please them a long time ago." Pops in old, beat up cassette of No Life 'Til Leather demos.
From speakers, a high-pitched, nasal whine emerges. "No life 'til leather, we're gonna kick some ass toooniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!" A dog howls disapprovingly in the distance.
James: "Oh yeah. Heh heh... I forgot."
RR: "Now, guess-AH! what-AH! the next-AH! thing we're gonn-AH! work on is-AH!?!"

Ha - it seems all of my favourite bands seem to hate each other! I`ve heard all 4 of the "big 4" of thrash dissing each other at some point over the years...
I`m actually hopeful for the new Metallica album, despite hating St Anger. Seems they`ve got that out of their system and despite Lars saying they`re not apologising for it it does seem that way in recent interviews with him and Hetfield.

ANGER TRIBUTE ============= Oooooooooooh, what a good band we are Back from the brink of extinction, it seemed Oooooooooooh, we play downtuned guitars And boy it sounds "raw" to intentionally sing out of key Back to our roots These songs are long And there are fast parts So that automatically means that they're good! DOUBLE BASS-AAAAAH!!! Back to our roots Complex just like "...Justice!" Complex just like "...Justice!" Bob says that we are a jam band And should write everything here on the spot So I'm making all of this up as I go along To capture these moments of genius Listen to how well the songs flow! But I will say, every record had something good on it, except st. anger. completely worthless.
every other album had at least 2-3 good songs.
that's all I'm hoping for.
and I agree, hetfield couldn't sing his way out of a wet paper bag. definitely the weakness of the group.

I never was real big on Metallica, but they certainly do not suck. They are a victim of fair-weather fans. Sellout is an opinion word that can’t be proven factually and its been thrown around in this thread like the easiest girl in town. What I think is funny is how you all have taken it so personally. Metallica has changed and some of you see that as an affront to your existence. Anyone care to tell me why? I mean what’s the point? Stop buying their records.

This interview was actually really well done, very forceful and ballsy questioning imo, basically asking all the questions ive been wondering. I think he sounds like hes got a good grip on what made Metallica great, even though Kirk, James, and Rob are all more open to admitting the loss of their excellence in recent years.
And yeah Load & ReLoad werent metal, and St.Anger was a disapointment, but Divine Intervention & Diablos in Musica are TERRIBLE metal albums, and God Hates Us All isn't impressive by any means, but Christ Illusion was pretty good and their best since Seasons "coughdavelambardocough" so if Metallica can make an album that stands as their 6th best under the Black, then I'll be a happy camper.

I mean if you want to voice your opinion, thats fine, but I think the first step would be to make it legible to everyone. A giant run-on-sentence fragment-paragraph in all caps touting the superiority of Metallica over Slayer doesn't exactly make a good case. As for Metallica, I'm in a "I'll believe it when I hear it" frame of mind. Although, Rick Rubin does rule. His stamp is on some of my favorite albums.

""Or taking longer to do the same. And that also applies to recording. People ask why it takes two years for METALLICA to make a record. We don't work 16-hour days in the studio for six days a week anymore. We work six-hour days in between dropping off our kids at school and picking them up again. The record still gets made, it just takes a bit longer."
And that, my friends, is precisely what I mean when I say we will never again see the old Metallica. These guys are coming from a completely different place, a land where James is the Prom King and not the angry pock-marked outcast; where Lars is banging an actress while viewing fine art instead of being the midget troll outcast; and where Kirk is on the cover of every Guitar Hero Magazine, instead of being the angry poodle-haired snaggle-toothed outcast. I hope you prove me wrong, but I just don't see it.

-hes not saying his band is the most hardcore thing since the comdom was invented
-hes not talking himself up
-hes not outright defending St.anger, hes just glad he made an album
-he's making music for himself not just what people want him to
-he admits the band had to improve to keep gping and made it a point instead of coming out with another shitty album, they acctually made an effort weather or not the new one is good
-unlike alot of other rock stars i feel after reading that interview he was being staight up with the interviewer and his fans

Fuck that. The production on RTL is pretty bad, alright not st anger or justice bad, but the guitars sound completely hollow and have no depth and theirs too much chorus. bob rock did a excellent job on the black album regardless of whether you like the direction.

Worst band ever. What do you expect from a band that works with some of the cheesiest producers in rock music? Kerry King has no room to talk either since Slayer hasn't done anything good in 20 years!!!!

I think you've got me all wrong.....I'm not a Metallica "fanatic" or "defender". St. Anger was terrible (as were Load & Re-Load IMO). However their first four (arguably five) records were great, genre defining, hallmark achievments in Metal....
That post was mainly a dig at all of the little Blabbermouth haters - and it's true. No Blabber-basher will probably ever achieve even half of the success and influence that Metallica have.....especially if they are sitting in front of a screen and going into bash mode every time they see a Metallica story.
That's the one thing I don't understand about Metal fans....In other genres, like Country for example, you don't really hear people bashing Willie Nelson for not writing another "Red Headed Stranger"; or lamenting Johnny Cash straying from his "Ring of Fire" roots. In Blues, you don't hear people slagging BB King for just making albums for an excuse to tour, or not re-writing "The Thrill is Gone". Those songs/albums are judged on there own merits - and the artists still get respect despite their recent output. I don't understand why Metal fans are so quick to turn on the old guard.
Metallica deserve respect for their early work and achievments.
....and the fact still remains:
METALLICA > any blabber-bitches band. It's just a fact.
CLUTCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

METALLICA's ULRICH: We Made Everything After 'And Justice For All' To Piss Everybody Off - Jul7 31, 2007.
Metal Hammer: You've already recorded the drum, guitar and bass tracks for the new album, with the rest to be added some time in August.
Lars: "The backing tracks are done, yeah. But Rick [Rubin, producer] likes to keep things organic and work in a way that can be described as 'of the moment.' If we put in more than 2 hours a day we should be done by October."
Metal Hammer: Rubin isn't known for being to giving with his time. What role has he played in the sessions?
Lars: "He's been there every single day so far, at least our poster of him has. He's all about the big blunts. He doesn't analyze things like music or tell James to play something in F sharp. He doesn't even know what that is. He's more about the feel: is everyone playing nice? Rick's a vibe magazine guy too. He's down with the brown!"
Metal Hammer: And is it okay for Rick to tell you something you've done sucks?
Lars: "Absolutely. We just laugh at him but inside we know he is probably right. Plus there's not a lot of gay with him. He really speaks his mind about that. Either something's gay or something isn't. I have trouble with that one."
Metal Hammer: How easy was it to can Bob Rock?
Lars: [Frowning]: "That's not a term I'd like to use. We'd been making shitty records together for almost 20 years! That's as destructive and horrible a relationship as you can come up with in music, film...just about anything. But it had got to a point where we would both finish off each other's boyfriends. We needed to look somewhere else for our own sanity, survival and fulfillment."
Metal Hammer: How did you let him know that it was over?
Lars: "We talk on the phone a lot. And text each other on Myspace. That's the thing. I've said it many times: Bob has always been primarily a friend, a Myspace friend, a friend who is a man, and secondarily a producer. And that friendship hasn't suffered whatsoever. He sent me a funny joke today!"
Metal Hammer: In hiring Rubin, what were you hoping to achieve?
Lars: "To a certain extent, it was to do with wiping the slate clean when it came to the process of making shitty records. I've known Rick for many years but we've never smoked together. He brings a whole new type of bud from Mexico this time."
Metal Hammer: In keeping with the fact that you've been playing the title track of the "...And Justice for All" album again, Internet gossip suggests that some of these songs will be long ones.
Lars: "I wouldn't say that they're longer than the ones before. We've always written long songs. The problem is most of them are not good. Nine or ten of those will appear on the new record".
Metal Hammer: Kirk has said that although this is METALLICA's 11th studio album. It feels like the band's sixth. Does a part of you consider "St. Anger" was a mistake?
Lars: "We don't know the difference any more. Not tiling my kitchen in the shade of gray that I wanted was a mistake. The Napster dispute wasn't a mistake, but it caught us off guard and took a lot of our time for nothing. The music has always been purely garbage since 88 or so. It was the right thing to have done the same in 2003. That said, I listened to it a couple of months ago and it's a difficult record to hear. But when I finished it, it made me do the same kind of backflips as all the other records because I am a male gymanst in the 2008 Olympics! Yay! I am wearing my leotard right now. See??"
Metal Hammer: You must've known that after "Justice", some people — including Kerry King [of SLAYER] who called you "fragile old men" — would never take the band seriously again.
Lars: "Oh listen, the reason we did all albums after AJFA that movie was to piss everybody off. Just kidding. But being the source of everyone's anger sucks but what can we do? We are burned out."
Metal Hammer: As fascinating as it looked on screen, wouldn't it have been better to keep those things behind closed doors?
Lars: "There's certainly an argument for that. But right from day one, METALLICA has always been about relationships. Unlike great bands like LED ZEPPELIN who tried to keep things mystical, we've gone out of our way to be as accesible as possible. Obviiously they were right and we are wrong. Nobody gives a rats ass about a musicians' feelings or personal life. Keep it shut. Lesson learned."
Metal Hammer: Nevertheless, "Some Kind of Monster" raised a lot of questions about your coheisiveness as a band. How are you all faring now?
Lars: "Of course, it asked some important questions. But you've got to remember that it was a moment in time from five years ago. Phil [Towle, therapist] is no longer around and we all miss him dearly. He is in my 'five' though. I call him when I need to record a fill. I get scared of the cymbals sometimes. And mentioning Phil's name reminds me, he always used to tell us back then that the music we're making wouldn't shine through until the record after 'St. Anger'. I think he was right about that. Even that nerd knew that record sucked beyond belief."
Metal Hammer: Not everyone approved of the new songs that you debuted earlier on the tour.
Lars: "Listen, what are we gonna do? Try hard? We are rich and famous baby! STFU! I've just been on the METALLICA message board where a lot of moaning about all sorts of subjects goes on. I got banned from it though because I am too short to be on there. They thought I was a 12 year old boy."
Metal Hammer: Do you consider this new album to be a thrash metal record?
Lars: "Hell no. We are having Enya sing on 3 tracks. It's raw though!"
Metal Hammer: Isn't that the record that the fans what you to make?
Lars: "With Enya? Haven't heard that. I hope so, the fans (money) is crucial to me!"
Metal Hammer: Does it feel like you owe anything to people who loved METALLICA in the early days but haven't liked too much of the band's music since the "Black Album?"
Lars: "Um, no. Not at all. F them. I've a responsibility to my kids and to my lady-like gentleman partner to be there. So, basically, we stopped trying to please the fans a long time ago and I thought that was obvious from our work."
Metal Hammer: When do you hope to release the album, and being touring properly?
Lars: "It'll be mixed by November and out in the new year. Maybe some time around February. In terms of playing live, we won't be quite as nutty as before. Backstage though it will be more nutty than ever! Pun intended!!
Metal Hammer: What you might call "doing less to do more?"
Lars: "I said, doing less and making more." As in royalites from our first 4 records keep filling my accounts and we really don;t even practice any more. If you thought St. Anger sucked, wait for this one!"

ya whine & bitch, bitch and whine about EVERYTHING 'tallica does. been listening to 'tallica since i bought 'Kill' on VINYL when i was 11 years old. Die hard fan here. even i don't like every single Met song. 'Phanton Lord" eh...no. "Fade"...YES! despite the accoustics. Shocking at first, but it turned into a classic. DENY THAT ONE, kids. Fuck, when i heard "Nothing Else", I was dumbfounded for about 1 hour, until i realized that it was genius. C'mon, "Sad" and Nothing Else" on the same album, that's called diversity. something most bands do not have, for fear of being called "sell outs". Who is the real sell out...the bands that do their own thing? or bands that continue to make the same album time & time again and do not cross so called boundaries marked out by us, the fans. In the end, Metallica are the originals in this industry. before "Sandman" what was the heaviest song you ever heard on the radio? You can't just sweep 'tallica under the rug. Someday, maybe with this next album, they'll have a song that just fuckin lays to waste anything you've heard. then all you who've been bashing them since "Justice" or "Black" can eat your words and lie to yourselves, telling everyone, "yeah, i've always LOVED Metallica..." And us who've stuck by Met through everything (and even i have'nt agreed with all they've done) will be there to once again kick your fucking teeth out and introduce you to the inside of your ass.

I totally agree with you. I still think both sides (those that blindly bash and those that blindly defend) need to pull their heads out of their asses. People like i am NO One, who alleges he bought kill 'em all on vinyl when he was 11. I imagine that would put him in his early 30s at least...... and yet here he is defending his favorite band, but sounding as dumb as the people he's putting down on. I, as an objective observer, would like to (to use his own terminology) kick his teeth in and introduce him to the inside of his ass for being so damn stupid. He needs to realize that the steadily declining quality of their releases.... and Lars' hypocritical double talk has lost a lot of fans PERMANANTLY and i highly doubt they'll be back.

You're a victim of the system now, a shitty greedy rockstar who does what he's told. A sad, unhappy person, and it shows. Divorces, people living, getting bold and fat, doing drugs. Don't know if you'll see this but, since you asked, I'm most into U2, Sarah McLachlan and Idlewild these past few years - well, 26 years in U2's case. As far as my taste (or lack thereof) in metal, I'm listening to the new Machine Head as I type this. In addition to MH, my fave current metal bands are Nightwish, Amon Amarth, Mastodon, Opeth & Behemoth. As far as the classic shit, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Testament & Queensryche rock my world, and I'm starting to develop some serious respect for Kreator, who are still fairly new to me. Lastly, not only do I know that ALL 4 OF THE "BIG 4" LOST IT LONG AGO (the last great album out of any of 'em was "Sound of White Noise"), I also know that Voivod smoked them all even back when the 4 of them were great.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Why does Kerry King feel he needs to run his fucking mouth the way he does.
He calls Metallica "old men", conradiction there? Kerry King is the same fucking age as those guys give or take a year.
Just because he still tries to portray the hardman of metal image doesnt make him justified in his bullshit statements.
Jeff Hanneman pisses on King from a great height as a musician and Kings solos are fucking lame. Same shit over and over again.
Kerry King solo formula - 1 Pick a scale that loosely fits the song, 2 play around it at some ridiculous pace making it as discordant as possible.
With him its all about the image i'm afraid.
At least Metallica have had the balls to experiment and evolve. Slayer have simply written the same album over and over again for the last million years.

Metal Hammer: Not everyone approved of the new songs that you debuted earlier on the tour.
Lars: "Listen, what are we gonna do? Take a poll of the people that exit the venue? Stop playing them?"
According to Trujillo, the new (horrible) songs won't end up on the new album. So, how do you like dem apples, Mr. Two-faced Rockstar Jackass?
Despite all the forthcoming "'tallica" hype, Testament will bury the new effort by Hetfield, Ulrich & Co. - as good as their new album may be by post Flemming Rasmussen-era standards. "'tallica" should return to standard E tuning and lean on Andy Wallace to mix their new output, just in order to not be totally outclassed by Testament in their current outstanding incarnation, with Alex Skolnick on lead guitar and Nick Barker on drums.

The people that were dissing Fade to Black because it was acoustic, first of all this is the first i've ever heard of it, secondly it fit the album, it fit the band it fit the style, the only guys that complain about something just because its acoustic are people that only want to thrash all the time no matter what the music is. But Lars here is grouping those same people with his own fans that made the band what it is today, Load fans didn't make the band, Reload fans didn't make the band, i think Lars has it a lil backass, the only reason he has an old lady and a kid and the hosue he does is because of those fans, which were also the same fans that bought black and rejected it as being as high quality as other Metallica albums, and a lot more commercial sounding, possibly pressure from record companies??? I like the albums after too, and they felt they needed to do that thats fine, but they do have to realize they did alienate the fans that made them the band that sold most of their albums to, and thats where lars is a lil confused i think. I bet you i can re-enact the whole Metallica switch from Justice to Black. Record company: Man look at those and justice for all sales, if only we could make it g-rated so we can play it all on the radio, oh and how about some 3-5 minutes songs instead? Metallica: What about our fans they'll say we're sellouts? Record Company: Just look at Sammy Hagar and Van Halen, just say to your fans "its a matter of opinion" and pretend like you love your music and your fans will still love you, trust us we've been selling records to these dumbasses and making tonnes of money off of them for years. Metallica: Whats in it for us? Record Company: Well we're poor some money into your video budget (Lars thinks: finally) so you can be played on MTV, expose the mainstream crowd to you guys a little more, have a couple ballads that everyone can relate too, and a song thats so rythmic that it'll never go away, no matter how hard you try, #1 #1 #1 everywhere. And best part yet, you guys can write it all yourself, we're just asking for you guys to give a lil back after we backed you guys in your early days. Plus how about that money, you'll have way more of it. Metallica: ok.
