Entire NIRVANA Album Licensed To 'Rock Band' Video Game - Aug. 1, 2007
Launch Radio Networks reports: NIRVANA's landmark 1991 album "Nevermind" has been licensed in its entirety for use in the upcoming Electronic Arts video game Rock Band, according to Tech Digest. Gamers will be able to download the complete album and play along to it as they're playing the game. Rock Band will be available on November 20 for the Xbox platform. In addition, the song "Heart Shaped Box", from NIRVANA's 1993 record "In Utero", will appear in Guitar Legend, a game in the mode of the popular Guitar Hero that's being designed for mobile phones.

The licensing of NIRVANA's music has accelerated in the past year since Courtney Love, the widow of late frontman Kurt Cobain, sold a 25% stake in her husband's song catalog for $50 million.

Cobain's image has also begun showing up on lunchboxes, an action figure and even a key chain that doubles as a small liquor flask.

Love's manager, Peter Asher, told Variety that none of NIRVANA's songs would be used for anything that Cobain would have opposed. It is not known whether Cobain played or liked video games.

A documentary about the singer-songwriter, called "Kurt Cobain: About A Son", opens in New York, Los Angeles and Seattle in early October.

Nirvana did in fact change music quicker than any other band. After their explosion into the public psyche, thousands upon thousands of wannabe musicians realized that they didn't actually have to learn their instruments to make money in the music industry. All they had to do was shoot a lot of heroin, throw on a flannel shirt, and mumble incoherent babble over a bunch of noise. So I say thank you Nirvana... You truly were an inspiration to us all!

let's think about this for one second...

in a time when nirvana and other lameass, overrated, mainstream bands ruled the music scene (otherwise known as the early 90s), there was one band that was still alive and kicking in the rock n roll scene-- Guns N' Roses...

granted, they dont have much of an album catalog, but the albums that they have released thus far are great...so, overrated? my ass. at least axl didnt have to kill himself to expand his fan-base...

nirvana's fan base didn't expand because kurt killed himself. it expanded over time because of the quality of the songs & the honestly of the songwriting. nirvana's influence is everywhere & there is nothing you can do about it. those "lameass, overrated, mainstream bands" that "ruled the music scene" in the early 90's are either still around (pearl jam) or influenced countless bands since then (soundgarden, alice in chains &, of course, nirvana). enough said...

As another poster said, NIRVANA was a GOOD band. They've got some good tunes. But I still believe that they'd be NOTHING if Kurt hadn't killed himself. It was also the timing...Nirvana was still on top of the musical world when he went, thus shocking people into believing they were infinitely better than they were. Again, GOOD band, but not the legends they were perceived to be.

IMO Soundgarden was way better simply because they were a little more experimental...many of their albums (especially "Down on the Upside") redefined their sound, whereas Nirvana's sound basically stayed within the "grunge" framework.

Seriously, BOTH bands were great. It's not either/or. The good thing is that Nirvana cannot sell out, like say, Metallica - who was great as well. They won't HAVE to keep putting out product that will get more and more lame, like say, Ozzy. And if Axl keeps going like he is, then the same will be said about GNR. Each band did put out ONE totally PERFECT record that will stand the test of time and as a musician, I could live with that being my legacy. The problem with some of the dipshits on this board is that they think bands are sports teams or something. Sticking with GNR over every band is like rooting for the Baltimore Colts. There are no more Colts, but there is a Baltimore team. And you could draw a parallel with AXL's GNR. But THANK GOD that the living members of Nirvana didn't try to replace Kurt. THAT would have been ugly. What would they do ? Get the guy from Puddle of Mudd or something ? That's like CCR without John Fogerty or Aerosmith without Steve Tyler.

The point is that it appears that it's VERY rare for a band to go more than about 10 years and keep it together AND keep putting out good music. ESPECIALLY if you put out a stellar classic like Appetite For Destruction. Axl's unable to match that he knows it and is scared shitless to fail. But I say fuck it, man. There will never be another 'Back In Black' or 'Moving Pictures' or 'Master of Puppets' or 'Dirt,' or even 'Destroyer' but the bands gotta keep doing what they do. What else would you expect them to do - their musicians, not atheletes....get it, bitches ?

God bless 'em. They could be a bunch of politicians during all those years and contribute NOTHING.

This is just my opinion, but i think Nirvana would still be liked today even if Kurt hadn't killed himself. However, i think it would be more for "nostalgia" reasons than for making vital or "revolutionary" music. After all, all the grunge movement did was replace one image based form of music with another. Hair metal and Grunge were poth pretty generic, only difference was instead of teased hair and spandex.... the fashion was flanel shirts and shaggy hair.

Nirvana didn't kill glam. They just became more popular and glam became out of favor. Some glam albums still sold reasonably well and the destruction of glam probably also has to do with the fact that many of it's most popular bands were self-destructing. Gun N' Roses didn't release anything until 1994 I believe and that was not original material, plus two members had changed since appetite. Motley Crue lost their singer and didn't release anything till I think 1994 too. Poison also lost their guitarist. Plus these bands are still around now so their not destroyed. Velvet Revolver is successful, Buckcherry is successful and in other parts of the world many other rock bands that could be considered "glam are successful".

He wasn't lookin' for fanfare or fame
but it all came around just the same.
He then met a girl with desire in her eye,
he gave her love, she took his name.

The times they were good, the times they were bad,
most times it was just in between.
The hard pill he swallowed was the times that they had,
she put on display for all to be seen.

Some find their solace in work or the lord,
she was quite content in her dream.
When his eyes they burned from the bright lime light,
he found comfort in the bottle of Ol' Jimmy Beam.

One day from the depths of his deep darkened hole,
he reached out for something to feel.
She offered back nothin' but lack of respect
so he left himself out with two barrels of steel.

She cried in the day, she cried in the night.
She cried loudest when someone was near.
Whether crying for him or she cried for herself,
the bigger the camera, the bigger the tear.

Most folks agree that she was living a hell
and publicly she showed her pain.
And never once was there a thought for herself,
and the ever-growing slices of fortune and fame.

Now on the coattails of a dead man she'll ride
on the coattails of a dead man she'll ride.
On the coattails of a dead man she'll ride she'll ride,
on the coattails of a dead man she'll ride she'll ride high.

The Heckler
Through the door it slithers in,
Accompanied by its peers.
Always groveling for attention,
While no one really hears.
In its mind it's full of wit
And quite the social king.
It plants itself among the rest,
Who give it deadly state.

It's just a matter of opinion.

Further now there's a man of taste.
Of talent and precision.
To work and strive at his artform.
Has been his life's decision.
The stage is set. The perfect show
Is put before the mass.
Only to be ridiculed
by some slimy, pompous snake.

It's just a matter of opinion.

The oversaturation of grunge was killed

The oversaturation of nu-metal

So according to that logic:
Numetal is superior to grunge because it wiped it away.

I think Cobain was a puss-bag and took the easy way out (no, he WASN'T murdered) but this is just a travesty.

He never WANTED a bunch of kids looking up to him. He just wanted to make a living doing what he loved.

As stupid as it sounds, I can really understand how he had to feel.

What would you do if your only passion in life got stolen away from you by a giant corporation who whored you out all over the world? Sure you'd have fame and money and women, but if you never wanted any of that shit in the first place, how could it ever be a substitute for your own happiness?

When one of you makes it to the level where you can't leave your house without 30 photographers following you around or where you can't piss in a public restroom without 15 people asking for pictures and autographs, come back here and tell me how great it is.

Get a life kids. Most of you have no idea what the words "self-respect" and "integrity" mean.

Bloody hell, it frustrates me when anyone says Nirvana killed Glam. Bullshit. If we use that theory, Nu-Metal killed Grunge - so does that make the Limp Bizkits and Korns more important than Nirvana? Nirvana did not single handedly change music. They simply spearheaded a movement that was big for a few years - as have alot of other bands. If Cobain was still around today there is a good chance he would have released a number of mediocre albums and his "genius" would have begun to fade. Kill yourself at your peak and you become a legend.
I guarantee if Vince Neil, Jon Bon Jovi, Bret Michaels or any one else from a big 80's band blew their brains out during their peak there would be 12 year old kids right now saying how legendary they are.

"Cobain stood for something, Bon Jovi is a moron who stood for $$$$,"

that's not true. bonjovi wrote songs about society's woes, human relationships, and about his childhood and American life in general. and he may have been pop, but as a songwriter, he would bury just about any metal artist. songwriting is where his strength has always lied, just listen to blaze of glory, very meaningful and very well written songs.

i don't expect anyone here to give bonjovi any credit because its a metal website and opinions of him will naturally be negative and bias, but really he does have talent, its just that he's not doing the music you want to hear.

and it seems silly and naive to be picking on a musician for making money doing what he loves. there's nothing with desiring success as musician. it's perfectly natural. you're telling me that cobain didn't want to earn an income as a musician to sustain himself? if someone wasn't passionate about music, they wouldn't have bothered becoming a musician. it's hard making it in the industry, to do it, you have to promote yourself. otherwise, you're gonna be living on scraps, unless you're exceptionally gifted.

What did Cobain stand for? The dude signed to a MAJOR label, just like Bon Jovi. If he didn't want the money and didn't want the fame he could have remained on and indy label and continued to release music. Make no mistakes, Nirvana may be from a different era, but they are still a pop band, just like Jovi.
