COREY TAYLOR Says Record Company Politics Squashed Possibility Of Full ANTHRAX Collaboration
- Aug. 6, 2007
|
|
As BLABBERMOUTH.NET first reported yesterday, ANTHRAX has abandoned plans to utilize the services of SLIPKNOT/ STONE SOUR frontman Corey Taylor on its next album due to scheduling conflicts with Taylor's other projects. ANTHRAX is said to be currently looking for a new singer to join the fold, although this has not yet been officially confirmed by the band or its management. Until recently, Taylor had harbored hopes of replacing Joey Belladonna, who himself had taken John Bush's place in order to reunite the New York thrash group's best-known lineup. As recently as June, Taylor was refusing to rule out the possibility that collaborating with ANTHRAX on the follow-up to "We've Come for You All", recorded with Bush in 2003, might lead to something a little more permanent. Having written lyrics to fit nine songs for the album, Taylor said he was "taking baby steps" towards what would happen next, though he was clear to point out his responsibilities towards SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR. Talking on the latter's latest U.K. tour, Corey tells Metal Hammer magazine: "All I'm going to be able to do is help ANTHRAX with the album. I'd known all along that it would come down to how much time I had. Unfortunately but fortunately I've got a new album to do with SLIPKNOT. The SLIPKNOT guys got together for a brief meeting before I left home [in Iowa], and it was a lot of fun. There was a lot of laughing and goofing on each other. We all felt really stoked about starting up again. We've already started to put together a plan for the album and tour, everything starting to come together." The flipside is that thoughts of doing anything meaningful with ANTHRAX are now impossible. "Various people at the record company [ Roadrunner] put their foot down about that," reveals Taylor. "So the way we've left it is that I will do a couple of songs with them, and not the whole album." That must have been incredibly frustrating? "Of course," Corey tells Metal Hammer. "I was so stoked that the ANTHRAX guys would consider doing anything with me. So the last thing I wanted to do was let them down. I have no idea of what they'll do now [that I'm unavailable], but the fact that they would still want to do something with me is very exciting. We'll have to see what happens." Having broken ties with Ross Robinson to work with Rick Rubin, SLIPKNOT is still undecided as to who will produce the successor to 2004's "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)", but drummer Joey Jordison has already revealed that preparation for their fifth studio album (1996's independent debut "Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat" is often overlooked) begins in October. "That's when the writing is due to start," clarifies Corey. "Recording will hopefully be in January, that's the plan at least." Expect to hear the album in the spring, possibly preceded by live dates. Meanwhile, has the singer been stockpiling plenty of material? "Oh, I've got an absolute ton of stuff, man," Corey tells Metal Hammer. "I got three notebooks of ideas from the past year and a half alone. It's so great, I think we're gonna do something really different with this album. Different, but brutal." (Thanks: Metal Hammer)

Couldn't he just flip the record company dogs the middle finger? They certainly are not going to terminate a proven money makers contract...or would they? Discuss.

Anthrax is a washed up bunch of losers. Corey good move to blame the record company, that way you don't look bad and then Anthrax can stuff themselves into an envelope and be mailed straight to Siberia. Oh and disband Stone Sour as well, it's hurting your voice, you don't sound menacing anymore. I am looking forward to the new Slipknot though, carry on.

Slipknot and Nickelback are Roadrunner's only true cash cows. Anything that fucks with that will get squashed instantly. There was no way Taylor would be able to do the Anthrax deal without delaying Slipknot for 6 months to a year. The only way that Anthrax's company would greenlight a new album with Taylor would be if they toured behind it. The reason for this would be because Roadrunner, who owns Corey Taylor, would demand top dollar from Island to allow him to do it. The only way Island could even dream of making any money would be from a tour. Well Roadrunner doesn't want a tour because they lose money from not having new Slipknot product to sell. It sucks, but the more famous you are, the less you own yourself. Take Prince, for example. He didn't change his name to a symbol just to be freak. It was the only way he could have creative control to put out the music he wanted until his WB deal expired. Anthrax basically fucked up by even asking him in the first place.

I wouldn't mind hearing a punkish thrash album with Scott Ian yelling out the vocals. That wouldn't be such a bad idea. Then for concerts, they can play SOD songs and maybe do some crowd participation with the Anthrax tunes. :D

You hit the nail on the head. That is the price of fame. Musicians are, have always been, and always will be considered products. In the 50's and 60's, they were owned by the mob. In the 70's, it was the record companies, and by the end of the 90's it was Corporate America. You wanna be a rock star? You will be a slave as long as you agree to take the paycheck.

If Prince couldn't tell WB to fuck off, Corey Taylor DEFINATELY couldn't tell Roadrunner. Another example: Van Halen. Those guys were more than willing to do another record with Gary Sharone, but WB put the kibosh. Basically WB said no Sammy, no DLR, no record. Corey taylor is damn lucky he is even allowed to do Stone Sour. If it wasn't on Roadrunner, it never would have happened. The fact is that there are very few bands that have any chance of selling any records these days, so if Roadrunner happens to have two, they will do anything to ensure that it doesn't get fucked me. The creative control that bands like Metallica and Tool have are gone at that level. Slipknot and Nickleback will continue to be good little boys and do exactly what Roadrunner will tell them to do, or else they will be destroyed. It sucks, but that is why the next albums by both bands will sound exactly like the last one. And Corey Taylor and Chad Kroeger will march in lockstep.

Scott has said that they COULD NOT have continued as they were with Bush, financially speaking - So that was OVER. They should have done whatever was necessary to keep Joey in the band this time around...PERIOD. That lineup had a very successful tour, and if they made a decent album with Spitz & Belladonna back in the group it would have sold moderatley well. They FUCKED up - Again.

I wonder if a simple band 'break-up' would constitute a record deal termination... and if it would be a legal matter if the same individuals simply continued under a different name. I've always wondered myself, because just in case I have the chance of being signed and touring and stuff, I want to know how to get out if things start going bad.

What about Nuclear Blast USA? They just signed Testament and are one of the strongest metal labels in the industry - Chuck says they are an awesome company because they support their bands much more than just "resources". I've heard how Road Runner works and I think they are greedy and control mongors - they don't care about the "people" just the moolah! So yes they have every right to protect their investment, but fuck 'em if they can't have some decency and humanity. Just ask Phil Demmel about the troubles working on DDP caused - not only with RR but with Robb as well.

Please! I hope the dust has settled with Bush by this point. WCFYA was the best album that Anthrax has put out since Among The Living, and Joey's voice was good for the 80's, but it's just too damn CHEESY now. He's not metal enough.
Also, Anthrax are veterans. The last thing they needed was to bring Corey Taylor in to be the Gary Cherone of Anthrax. They can still put out great new stuff, but changing vocalists this far into the game is just silly, just like getting Belladonna back and basically giving the middle finger to more than half their career's worth of material.
They need to look out into the audience (if they ever play again) and see who's coming to their shows, because the majority of the people there are young...it's not the 40+ year olds who were rocking out on the Spreading The Disease tour. These kids know the later stuff and aren't into the fruity Belladonna sound.
If they can't get back Bush it might at least be entertaining to do a couple one off shows with Turbin...for nostalgia. He's so hung up on the glory days of Fistful of Metal that he'd do it quicker than Steven Adler would do a GNR tour.

As for Anthrax, they probably want to put someone they already know on the spot, but i think it's time for the next (AND BRAND NEW) Anthrax singer to step up.
I mean, A LOT of people would love to sing in Anthrax. All they have to do is to find the person.

Corey would have been a good bet and they would have been able to cross a generation gap and maybe gain a few more fans. I understand that move totally from a business standpoint. But yeah, I can see Roadrunner shaking theirs heads going uh uh to that...Imagine if Corey blew out his voice? Wow...Lawyers all over the place. I believe Corey totally on this one.
