Is DEVILDRIVER 'The Next PANTERA?'
- Aug. 17, 2007
|
|
Sant Barbara, California's DEVILDRIVER will be the featured band on this Sunday's (August 19) "Rebel Access" TV, which airs at 10:00 p.m. on Channel 19 all over the Chicagoland area. The entire episode is dedicated to DEVILDRIVER, featuring videos, interview, and live performance footage shot while they were in Chicago. An exclusive interview with frontman Dez Fafara and John Boecklin contains their recollections on how the two met and formed the band. John explained, "We are in small town in this bar, and I had heard Dez wanted to start another band. So I came up to him and I told him I play guitar and he says to me, 'Why should I pick you over this guy?' and I said, 'Well, that guy can shred my face off, but he can't write a song.' Dez put up his drink and said, 'Honesty I like it.'" DEVILDRIVER was reportedly dubbed "the next PANTERA" by that group's former lead singer Philip Anselmo, who has been friends with Fafara since the mid-'90s. When asked about Anselmo's stamp of approval, Dez replied, " Phil is by far the best frontman out there, and everyone knows we've been friends for a long time. We first heard that comment when we were at a press conference in Europe. That comment kinda humbles you, and you don't know what to really say to that. There will never be another [ PANTERA] — no one is trying to do that, we can never hold a candle to that band. All the things you have to say just to humble yourself for a comment like that makes you say, 'Thanks bro.' After all that, you just say, 'Thanks, man, I'll do a shot of whiskey for you saying that.' Every single member of that band is an ultimate player and we can't hold a candle to that, so we say thank you and leave it at that." The advice DEVILDRIVER has for the younger musicians? John: "Focus on writing the best songs before you go out and play live. If you don't have good songs, you don't have nothing." Dez: "Don't follow. Focus in on something different. If you end up sounding like your favorite band your not on a good wave length." "Rebel Access" features a band one week and plays the hardest "in-your-face" music videos in Chicago the next week. Normally I'm pretty cynical about annointing bands "the next big thing" but Devildriver brings it and brings it hard.
Nobody will ever be the next Pantera but Devildriver is definitely the real deal and will be for years to come.

I really, really like DevilDriver but I don't think they could ever be the next Pantera, no band could ever be Pantera. DevilDriver bring something unique and they can actually come close to Pantera but I don't think they will ever be at the same level. I am just glad that DevilDriver are still around as you never know with Dez.

What? You make it sound as if Pantera may have possibly been the dreaded "D" word.
Spot the gramatical curiosity in this sentence:

Dez really does seem to think that he is some legend or leader in the underground scene. I will always remember him first as being Coal Chamber's singer. Coal Chamber played some shows with death metal bands, and that's probably how he really heard death metal for the first time. I doubt that he grew up on the shit like he tries to make it seem.

but i do think devildriver rocks though. can't understand why everyone slams dez for having been part of another movement with coal chamber and then changing directions with devildriver.....yet nobody gives pantera shit for having been a glam cover band. i think it's just because dez was more visible than pantera was during their early period unless you happened to live in dallas or maybe houston at the time. would dez have formed devildriver if coal chamber hadn't played with some death metal bands....?
maybe. maybe not. would pantera have strayed away from the glammy early sound & come up with their signature heavy hardcore groove metal sound if it weren't for exhorder and dead horse....?
maybe....maybe not.
but nobody pops out of the womb though as a fully developed musician that knows exactly what they wanna do though....you take inspiration and influences where they come and that all happens eventually.
speaking of exhorder though, it's really cool to see kyle thomas out there kicking ass with alabama thunderpussy after all this time. now if mike hagga from dead horse could get a decent break that'd be really cool too.

Devildriver is a fairly decent metal band that is straightforward enough to gain a large fanbase, but they don't actually bring anything new to the table. I think Dez knows this, as I remember reading a quote in a recent news post saying that he wanted to be in a band that wasn't popular so he could push boundaries, or something to that effect. As long as they're content with what they're doing, so be it, but claiming they're innovators or legends is obvious hyperbole.

Well, that depend on your perspective. Day One starting with "Cowboys From Hell" maybe.
Day One starting with their 80's Van Halen-ish output and hair band style - maybe not.

Coal chamber has been dead for YEARS... Why is that band even mentioned here??
The Last Kind words is one of the best metal releases 2007. I fucking love that album!! Is Devildriver the next Pantera? Not as a Pantera rip-off, but as the next big thing in metal... oh yes!
Monte Conner (who discovered Sepultura) was on Sirius Radio, on Hard Attack and the dj asked him what the next big thing is going to be as far as metal and he said, "DEVILDRIVER." Fuck yeah!"

I normally don't post to these fucking things but come on...man...you guys really love exhorder huh? a failed thrash band that never went anywhere Roadrunner thought they were on to something but decided they were wrong...pantera is pantera plain and simple and they were damn good at what they did I don't think vinnie labella or david main could touch what dime did on the guitar period...his influences and feeling are way more prevalent...don't be mad cuz' pantera did a far better job I mean come one seriously dudes pantera had their own groove listen to "regular people" conceit...who wrote far beyond driven?...strength beyond stength, slaughtered, hard lines and sunken cheeks, throes of rejection or better yet let's hear exhorder write something with as much as suicide note part 2 or Floods...they can't their 'debut' album shows they can't even be creative enough to put out better material it's same shit as 2 years before yet they still have nothing to show for the fact if they did "create" pantera's sound face it pantera are more diverse and heavier far more intense...it figures people would dog on'em simply because they went somewhere and kicked ass whilst your Exhorder band didn't make much of shit with themselves I mean you can hear influences from slayer and other predecessing 80's bands in them as well...so to say pantera ripped'em off is bullshit they claimed that because pantera was successful and they were not Take beer for example... there's good beer and there's shitty beer it's not what it's made of( it's all pretty much made barley, hops, yeast etc...) but how it's made is a totally different story take it or leave it
