METALLICA Bassist Says Upcoming Album Will Not Include Previously Performed Material
- Aug. 17, 2007
Last year, METALLICA performed two new tracks live in concert that have become known as "The New Song" and "The Other New Song". Earlier this year, bassist Robert Trujillo said in an interview that neither of those cuts was going to be included on the next studio album, but that parts of one of them might be reworked into other songs. Then METALLICA surprised the audience at their show in Bilbao, Spain on June 29, 2007 when they once again performed "The Other New Song".
Sweden's Close-Up magazine caught up with Trujillo in Stockholm, Sweden on July 12, 2007 and asked him: Will "The Other New Song" be on METALLICA's next album? "Well, I don't think so and the reason is we didn't record it!" laughed Trujillo. "We call the song we played the other night 'Vulturus'. I don't know if that's gonna be the official title of the song in the future. We enjoy playing that song, it's kind of a MISFITS-y kind of a jam. We had been rehearsing it in San Francisco and having a lot of fun playing it.
"I don't think we played it so well the other night [laughs]. It was horrible actually, it was really bad. We played it last year in Japan a couple of times and it went over really well there. I think this last time we played it we hadn't played it since we rehearsed in San Francisco. So it had been a couple of weeks and all of a sudden it's, 'Let's play this song,' and it’s like 'Wait, how does it go?'
"'Vulturus' exists kind of as a live song 'cause we've already played it. The other song that we used to do was a bit of an experiment. We thought it would sound good live and we had fun playing it live. We thought maybe it was a little long, but we thought there were some really great parts in that song. We were never completely dead-set on the arrangement of that song or it existing to be a track on the album. So we've basically dissected the best of that and married it into something that's also really slammin' and exciting. So one of the new songs you will kind of hear on the album and it's gonna be great. But we really wanna get these songs recorded — not these two, but our new material. We wanna save a lot for the album and bring it out fresh and ready to go. We're still in the first phase of the recording process right now, so we don't really wanna blow our water right now."
NOTE: "The Other New Song" has been rumored to be titled "Vulturous". However, the Close-Up reporter asked Robert Trujillo to spell the title and the bassist said "It's 'V-U-L-T-U-R-U-S' — all U's."
Trujillo's original English-language quotes were provided exclusively to BLABBERMOUTH.NET; the Close-Up article was published in Swedish.

Like it matters. No matter what they put on the new album, it's gonna suck. Look guys, allow me to be frank with you.. a person only has so much creativity within them when it comes to certain outlets for artistic expression before it becomes time for a change. Sure, you took that calculated risk, but you failed. You were only good at making one type of music, and that was thrash metal. Now that you've abandoned your roots, you'll find it hard to go back.

Unfortunately, that's just the way it is on this site. NO matter what their reasons are, the "bashers" will ALWAYS be around. Since 1980. And that is just the truth, and we just have to accept them, like the low life germs they are. :P

"95% of the people on blabbermouth (who are gay, by the way) will hate the new album NO MATTER WHAT it sounds like, because Metallica is not death metal"
No...... they will hate it because the hype machine surrounding this one has been similar to St. Anger. It's being touted as a return to form and in the end will more than likely be more post-grunge or nu metal rubbish.
"James Hetfield has clean vocals."
Hetfield has clean vocals after a lot of processing has been applied. His raw vocals sound like a pre pubescent boy.

Forget the whoas, clearly that's a case of not having lyrics yet.
The music for the verses and the chorus takes a bit of getting used to but when they slow down the beat and get into that chugging riff it's fucking great! If they keep anything from this song, i hope it is that riff.
It seems like they're on track to record the best MetallicA album they've written in YEARS. In no way do i think that it will match Kill through to Justice but as Kirk said, it should sit somewhere between there and the Black album ... and that at least would be a vast improvement.

Maybe its cuz the music sucks? or maybe because the clean vocals are EXTREMELY shitty? Wanna hear good clean vocals AND good music? Listen to Into Eternity, Nevermore, Firewind, Arcturus, Borknagar, Opeth, Rosenguard the list can go on for hours of bands with better vocalists than 96-present James Hetfield.

Remember, Rob did say that parts of the New Song and Vulturus may end up finding their way to the new album, but songs as they are now won't. So, it's a mixed bag.
If you liked the songs, you'll still get to hear parts of them. Hopefully, Metallica's trimmed the crap away and put the best stuff where it needs to go. If you didn't like 'em, the same applies.
I'm still optimistic that the new album may be a return to form for the band. Sure, it ain't gonna be another Master Of Puppets, but does it really need to be? I don't think so. With Rob actually playing bass on this one, a new producer and the band itself having a foul taste in their mouths regarding St. Anger, there's still hope.

True, you can't really pin the blame on the producer. But really, there has to be something to it. Look how long Bob Rock's been around as the fifth member of Metallica - plus he handled the bass duties in the studio for St. Anger. I for one am hopeful that the change to Rubin will be a good one. Plus, having Trujillo there to do his job will certainly help.
I don't know if St. Anger would've wound up better without Bob Rock at the helm. No one knows.
But I do think that taking a little more time to let Trujillo come into the studio and record the bass parts instead of Bob Rock would've helped. More so since he's considered Metallica's bassist and not 'Jason's replacement', as was the case when Jason joined the band, being referred to as 'Cliff's replacement' or the 'new guy'.
COMMENT | I don't think trujillo will make one bit of difference posted by : stiff 8/18/2007 1:19:26 AM
as far as the musical content of the new record is concerned. he'll end up not actually "writing" anything, but will do his damndest to contribute heavy basslines to what lars, james , and rick decide the songs will actually sound like.
remember in the "monster" movie when they deicided rob was the new bassist and they all said "we don't just want a 'bassist' we want a partner and a brother...an equal member".
and then when they actually had him signing contracts they were like " ok padner, you'll get 2% of royalties and gig guarantees and you'll actually have zero say in what we do."
doesn't seem like a partner, brother or equal member to me!
COMMENT | and their "need" for a producer is pretty weak as well! posted by : stiff 8/18/2007 1:41:54 AM
that's why I think the new record is taking so long, they're used to a producer like bob rock who actually spent every waking moment doing the bands job for them, writing the songs and directing the whole operation.
rick rubin, from what i've heard, just doesn't work like that. even from what slash said about him, he (rick)shows up every once in a while and tells them (the band) what he thinks about what the band has written, he doesn't actually "move in" with the band and write the record for them like bob rock does.
I think metallica got so used to how bob works that it made them lazy and like children who depend on their parent too much.
if anything, they should have gotten flemming rassmuessen back to produce the recordings of what metallica has written. that was the formula for "ride", "master" and "justice", which I think everyone can agree were their best efforts!
until they regain the mindset from those old days, i wouldn't expect to hear material similar to the old days, but i do think it is possible for them to regain that energy again, they just need to be hungry for it again. which i think they are on course for.
once they had respect. then they had extreme success in every way, (money, sales and respect), then they just had the sales and money and no respect. then they were like lost children. now that they still have money, but sales are down and the respect is gone. now they are hungey again but not for $, they've got plenty of that. they're hungry for one thing now..........RESPECT. and the only way they'll get that again is to release a heavy, good "metal" record. and i do think it is possible.
let's see what happens!
