Guitarist STEVE SMYTH Parts Ways With NEVERMORE - Aug. 30, 2007
Guitarist Steve Smyth has officially parted ways with NEVERMORE, citing personal and business differences.

"All things find their end eventually, and at this time I wish to make it clear that this was mutually agreed between the band and myself," Steve said in a statement.

"I will continue on with other aspects of my music career, including the upcoming release of THE ESSENESS PROJECT, an all-instrumental album in the vein of progressive rock that is now finished and being prepared for release."

He continued, "After a year and four months of being out of the touring scene due to ill health and then a kidney transplant, I have finally been given a full health clearance by my doctors to go back on the road, and I am now ready to return to the stage.

"I am proud and extremely honored to have been a guest of Uli Jon Roth at his Sky Academy concert series this past weekend, August 24th and 25th , in L.A. What an awesome experience! To jam with one of the greatest, as well as several other incredible guitarists and musicians who have been big influences on my playing over the years, and to make new friends as well, the whole thing was just incredible. Many thanks to Uli for inviting me, it was truly an honor!

"I am now embarking on a six-week of tour of Europe with my friends from the Danish thrash metal band, SPV recording artists HATESPHERE, first supporting BEHEMOTH in Poland, and then joining the DIMMU BORGIR tour. I have been a fan of HATESPHERE and friends with the band since 2003, when they opened for TESTAMENT at a festival we played together, and absolutely look forward to getting out with them and together, crushing Europe!"

During Smyth's time away from the touring circuit, NEVERMORE has been utilizing the services of longtime session guitarist Chris Broderick (JAG PANZER).

NEVERMORE has begun the songwriting process for the follow-up to 2005's "This Godless Endeavor", tentatively due next year via Century Media Records.

Well this sucks because Steve was a great fit for the band in my opinion. I was just thinking about guitarists "parting ways" with a band exactly like this says and I go right to Blabbermouth and see this right at the top. Talk about weird.

He wrote some fucking killer tunes, including my favorite on the record (A Future Uncertain), he was AWESOME in Nevermore, TGE is their best album IMO. Damnit, Broderick just doesn't fit like Steve.

Broderick is a very capable player for sure, but listen to the past couple Jag Panzer albums...a lot of weak material there.

Steve Smyth and Nevermore were a perfect fit..exactly why He left Testament.

A sad day indeed but its good to hear Steve Smyth is in good health. I had the chance of meeting Steve at a concert in North Carolina. I wish him luck and hope Nevermore can once again find another guitarist. By the way where is the fucken DVD that is supposed to come out this year?

Steve was a good fit next to Loomis indeed but now that he is living in London, England it really doesn't make sense for him to continue with Nevermore. Living that far apart is just not gonna work.

Broderick is a super sick player but clearly not much of a songwriter. If he is named the full-time replacement I guess Loomis will have to come up with the music for the next album. Which is cool because Loomis IS Nevermore!

"Personal and business differences"?

After Steve Smyth's long absence from the Nevermore linup, I'm not surprised per se, but considering his recovery I expected his return to the band. I still remember Warrel & Co. raving about finally being able to find the perfect fit for the second guitarist slot in Nevermore...

What is it with them and their second guitarists? From Pat O'Brien to Tim Calvert, to Curran Murphy to Steve Smyth to... Well, I hope Chris Broderick stays with the band as a full time member.

Nevermore's albums with just Jeff Loomis as songwriting and recording guitarist were good, but not as mulit-dimensional and outstanding as the ones with a guitar tandem, as amazing as Loomis is. Politics Of Ecstacy is still my favourite (apart from the weak snare sound), and I hope Nevermore continue in this more proggy POE and TGE direction, with Broderick as a contributing member.

If Scott Ian and Charlie Benante ever decide to put Anthrax to rest (I really hope so in case John Bush doesn't return), they could form a new band and give Steve a call.

All the best to Steve Smyth as well as Nevermore.

OK, makes sense then.

But Jeff Loomis "is" not Nevermore, but an integral part of course.

I agree with your comment on the second guitarist part except "Dead Heart In A Dead World" proved he was more than capable of going at it alone. That said I loved the vibe they had with Steve and for sure thought he fit perfect. They had a lot of problems touring off the last album with all the health stuff so I hope this next time around they do ok.

Pat O'Brien
Tim Calvert
Curran Murphy
Arif Sami
Steve Smyth
Chris Broderick

(Am I missing anyone?)

But the core of the band remains unchanged since like 1994.

Nevermore have been the best band around for years now and TGE was a masterpiece. Sucks that Smyth has left them but I`m sure they`ll find a great replacement. Great news that he`s back to full health, good luck to the guy in whatever he does next.
