RODRIGO Y GABRIELA Performs METALLICA's 'Orion' On 'Tonight Show'; Video Available - Sep. 9, 2007
Video footage of the guitar duo RODRIGO Y GABRIELA performing a cover of METALLICA's "Orion" on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on September 4, 2007 can be viewed below. The song is included on RODRIGO & GABRIELA's latest self-titled album, which came out in March 2006 via Rubyworks Records.

"Rodrigo y Gabriela" was produced by John Leckie (MUSE, RADIOHEAD, MY MORNING JACKET) and the artistes themselves. It was recorded in the U.K. in the late summer of 2005, and features nine new tracks — seven RODRIGO & GABRIELA originals and two covers: METALLICA's "Orion" and LED ZEPPELIN's "Stairway to Heaven". All the instrumentation on the album comes from RODRIGO Y GABRIELA's guitars, with the exception of guest gypsy violinist Roby Lakatos, who contributes a blistering solo to "Ixtapa".

Natives of Mexico City, Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero began their careers as members of TIERRA ACIDA, a heavy metal band which played on the city's underground gig circuit for seven years.

"Like a lot of Mexican youth, we were heavily influenced by American metal bands — METALLICA, MEGADETH, PANTERA, and also SEPULTURA," Gabriela explained. "It was a full band, very loud, and for vocals, Rodrigo would just scream. We played this way for seven years."

Since Rodrigo and Gabriela moved to Ireland from Mexico, they have released several albums, contributed to film soundtracks and sold out shows across Ireland and the U.K.

The group's "Live Manchester and Dublin" CD was recorded in Dublin's Christ Church Cathedral and the Manchester Academy and was issued in 2004. The album combines live performances from both cities and features their distinctive cover of METALLICA's "One" interwoven with the DAVE BRUBEK jazz classic "Take 5".

a) I agree that that chick wails.

b) they can't do the harmonized part in Orion (I assume) because there's no way they'd get enough sustain from classical acoustic guitars. I mean, they could try, but I don't think it would sound very good.

Like all the songs Metallica wrote such as I Am Evil, Helpless and The Prince. Oh, wait, those are Diamond Head songs that help propel Metallica's career. And let's not even get into all the Mustaine riffs and songs that have peppered their career since the beginning.

By the way Diamond Head called and they want their career back but I'm sure their doing fine on the royalty checks that show up every month.

Anyway, that was a great interpretation of Orion. Taking an acoustic approach that is done so imaginitively is always appreciated. I'll have to check out their material. If it's half as good and metal influenced it could be excellent.

You guys are REALLY impressed with boring stuff. I'm certain that real Latino musicians are wondering what that US audience is so wild about, a lot of those guys would totally smoke these two. Remember Charo? The "cuchi-cuchi" gal? Check out any of her flamenco records, your head will explode.

By the way, it was the Tonite Show, they were only allotted a couple minutes, that's probably why the didn't do the rest of the song - Time constraints.

They should do Metal Militia instead.

It's an OLD tune.
An artist who is still relevant is an artist whose latest tunes get the same treatment. Not the tunes from 21 years ago.
And I'm a Metallica fan, but come on, let's face the facts.

They do the harmony parts (on the album). Go download their version of Orion, then go out and buy the album.
It blew my mind the first time I heard their cover of Orion, because they make as much noise with 2 acoustic guitars as Metallica does with 4 electric instruments. I went and saw them in Philly last year and they were awesome. They're touring the US again real real soon. Go on ticketmaster and look them up. Tickets are still very reasonable for their shows.
