LED ZEPPELIN: Rehearsals For Reunion Show 'Have Been Hard Work But Great Fun'
- Sep. 14, 2007
|
|
ThisIsExeter.co.uk reports: LED ZEPPELIN, the heavy metal super group which formally disbanded amid tragedy 27 years ago, are coming back together for a one-off concert at London's cavernous O2 Arena, and many of the instruments they will be using for the massive gig will come from Exeter (United Kingdom) music-making master Hugh Manson and his world-famous Mansons Guitars, of Fore Street. Hugh, who has worked with and for the band for over 25 years, will be at the concert looking after the instruments along with one of his top Exeter technicians, Seth Baccus, the Fore Street shop manager. Hugh, who makes his one-off guitars at his workshop just outside Sandford, near Crediton, has been a regular at LED ZEPPELIN's secret rehearsal venue in London during the build-up to the sell-out concert. The band will perform together for the first time in 19 years in tribute to the late founder of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun, who signed the band in 1968. The group's three original members — singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones — will headline the November 26 concert, with late drummer John Bonham's son, Jason, on drums. Hugh, who at 53 can remember LED ZEPPELIN from the first time around, said: "It is going to be absolutely fantastic. Rehearsals have been hard work but great fun. "I have just finished making one new guitar for the concert and am now working on another, which will be a spare. It is a four-string bass which is extra long — at least that is the best way to describe it. "Some of the songs will be in a lower key than usual and, while you can tune a guitar to accommodate almost any note, the best way is to make an instrument to do the job — and that's what this is. "In fact, all the basses used by the band in the concert will be ours." Read the entire article at ThisIsExeter.co.uk.

Robert Plant will deny till his dying day that Zep are heavy metal! But! I too am old enough to have seen them in them in the beginning, and guess what? They were HEAVY METAL! They, along with Sabbath, layed the groundwork for all that we have and love today!

That they are even close to broke. OR that they are metal. But they are one of the best selling and most-liked bands of all time, so good for the fans. I'm personally not that into them.
I wrote a 10-page opus last year in college about Black Sabbath VS Led Zeppelin, too. Heh.

The answer is Hell Yes! Look, if you happen to be one of those people that think Dimmu Borgir are weak sellouts, than I'm not talking to you. But check this out, Iron Maiden fans. Do you really think that Ozzy Osbourne was a vocal influence on Bruce Dickinson? On Rob Halford? Dio? Or do you think that all of these metal bands copied Robert Plant? What about soloing? Iommi or Page? I will give Sabbath credit for Drop D tuning, but Iommi couldn't touch page on his best day. Now take the drum sound. John Bonhom invented and perfected Heavy Metal drumming. I dare you to play any pre Vinny Appice Sabbath tune next to either Kashmir or When The Levee Breaks. That full heavy sound that Bonham was getting is what every metal drummer copied. Finally, you have the hair metal subgenre. Although many to call it metal, many more do, so shut up if you think King Diamond is a sellout. Hair Metal is nothing Zeppelin's music with Kiss's clothes and Aerosmith's lyrics.

So if the bass at the show sounds like hell, your company is in ruins. Excellent!!!

Led Zeppelin aren't Heavy Metal... never have been and never will be.
And while Jimmy Page could out-solo Iommi, Iommi's incomparable riffs absolutely crush Page.

Jimmy Page can out solo Tony Iommi? I'm gonna have to call bullshit on that one. Page is one of the sloppiest guitarists that ever was. And Zeppelin were nowhere near metal.

They were considered metal back in the 70s, and no amount of angsty teen whining today will change that. Sorry losers.
Both bands (Purple and Zeppelin) were doing galloping riffs way before it was popular in the 80s (see Hard Lovin' Man and Achilles Last Stand).

Playing Kashmir from that Unledded thing they did years back, They kicked serious ass! They did it with class an orchestra, middle eastern singers and percussion. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. They are not what they were, but they'll always throw it down with style...I'd pay per view it!

Not all of their songs were as low as C#, but Into the Void I know for a fact is. Hell the whole 3rd album pretty much is come to think a bout it. I don't think the first 2 were, though.

You certainly have a lot of time on your hands. You could have used it it to find out that the Zep reunion is for benefit instead of going to a metal site to troll around and insulting everyone in there for listening to metal.
Back in topic, they can't even be close to broke with all those insane royalties that are surely still coming in...

When I was comin' up (44 now) Zep was considered "Metal", along with Sabbath, Purple, Rush, and Priest. While the signature Sabbath sound probably best defined the term, tunes like "Dazed and Confused", "Moby Dick", "Black Dog" and "Heartbreaker" by Zeppelin and gems like "Speed KIng", "Fireball", "Highway Star" and "Burn" from Deep Purple were indeed heavy for the time. As time went on, bands such as Van Halen, UFO, Scorpions, Rainbow, Ted Nugent were considered Metal. Then came NWOBHM, followed by the Thrash/Hair Band era, and so on and so forth. Thing now is, nobody is really standing out and you can take those fuckin' cookie monster vocals and toss'em.

Of course they are not Heavy Metal, but the people talking are not from the movement. This is the same people who would call POISON heavy metal. They put all of this under the same category. People that don't know what they are talking about because they talk about everything.
Discussion is over.

Label Zep as Heavy Metal? No way... We all know Jethro Tull took that award home in '89.

Here's the deal. We can't put modern standards on Led Zeppelin. They were completely revolutionary, and even if they aren't metal by out standards today, there is no question that they are of the top 2 influences in modern rock. I love Sabbath, but quit trying to compare because it isn't like Ozzy can do anything close to better than Plant anymore. I don't care what the prices are. If they tour, I'll see them anywhere. I can't pass up living legends like that. I'll just have to cross my fingers, and hope they can bring back the glory days.
