MIKE AMOTT: CARCASS Has Rehearsed And May Reunite For Tour
- Sep. 18, 2007
Former CARCASS guitarist Mike Amott (currently in ARCH ENEMY) has revealed that the legendary U.K. death metal band may reunite for a tour.
In an exclusive interview with Sweden's Close-Up magazine (web site), Amott said that he and guitarist/vocalist Bill Steer secretly met in Halmstad, Sweden last year to rehearse old CARCASS material. A couple of months later, they were joined by vocalist/bassist Jeff Walker for another practice session. ARCH ENEMY's Daniel Erlandsson was handling the drum duties at these rehearsals.
"It sounded really good and it was a lot of fun," said Amott. "We rehearsed pretty much the entire 'Heartwork' album [1993]."
The original plan was for CARCASS to play several festival shows this summer, but that fell through.
"I hope we can do some reunion shows at a later date," explained Amott. "It would be a lot of fun and I'd love to play the songs live again. Unfortunately, it can't happen until 18 months from now, at the earliest, because ARCH ENEMY has a totally full schedule. It's different for the other guys who don't work as actively on their music careers."
Have you discussed writing new songs?
"To write something new seems unnecessary. People still only want to hear the old stuff," said Amott.
After the "Heartwork" tour, Mike Amott left CARCASS. The band then released the appropriately titled album "Swansong" (1996).
What did you think of "Swansong" when it came out?
"I wasn't a fan of it," Mike replied. "But we actually rehearsed a couple of songs from it last year and they sounded pretty good. I think the production partly ruined it. It sounded sparse and basically all the extreme stuff that characterized CARCASS was gone. It felt boring."
Have the other members of CARCASS heard ARCH ENEMY?
"Jeff has flat-out said that he thinks we suck," Amott stated. "Bill is not into that kind of music. I think the guys left the metal world as it was in the middle of the '90s and haven't thought about it since. It seems they think it's a little bizarre that I'm still doing the metal thing full-on."
Original CARCASS drummer Ken Owen suffered a brain hemorrhage in 1999 and was hospitalized for ten months, slowly emerging from a coma.
"Ken is doing fine today, but he's not a metal drummer," Amott explained. "He's not capable of playing entire concerts with an extreme band like CARCASS. I still hope that he, if we do a tour, will travel with us and play a couple of songs each night."
Earache Records will re-release the CARCASS back catalogue with bonus material, including extra DVDs with brand new interviews and other footage.
"Jeff has negotiated with Earache and been able to make the label pay us a lot of old royalties," Amott revealed. "Of course money means something, but it would be great fun to go around and play songs that truly are classics in a genre. I've never played stuff like that to people before. I mean, songs that somehow have been soundtracks to people's lives. It would be fun to dig up the old corpse again."
Close-Up's new issue with ARCH ENEMY on the cover is out now.

Best news in Yonks! Don't make us wait 18 months - the new AE isn't worth touring that long! (Although it is better than that last Doomsday effort)
Jeff didn't used to think AE sucked - in fact he recommended AE and Spritual Beggars to me back in 96!
Carcass do indeed - RULE

ANYONE saying another 10-20 new tracks on a Reunion ALBUM won't be the best thing to put a shit load of these aweful little Carcass / At the Gates wanna-be's back in their place for another decade or two (and pretty much one of the best things to hit the shelves MANY years) is out of their f*kng MIND

but I still can't believe it's been cofirmed that they are practising their songs again!!!

Another good old school death metal band (the only one's worth a shit) getting back together is good news. Carcass eventually and Obituary back on the scene is good thing. But if this music is the "soundtrack" to your life, you must not have much of a life!

Thats probably because the AE of 1996 isn't really the same proposition. Their first three albums are pretty good post-Carcass efforts, maybe I'm getting old but the more recent stuff just doesn't do it for me.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I'm not impressed with this news. Yeah, it's cool and all for those who didn't get to see Carcass way back when, but I saw them in 1990 in AZ on the "Symphonies Of Sickness" tour (they opened for Death) and to me, Carcass was never really the same after that record. My problem is/was - is that I wished they could've kept doing "Reek..." type of stuff. I guess I didn't want them to "mature" and I still feel the same way.

there are those who get stuck in the past, and those who can grow with a band and the musical risks they take.
but at some point, we put our foot down and say: "now you've really crossed the fukkin line" (eg. Metallica)

That must have sucked spending all that time in the studio for Swansong, only to walk away thinking it sucked. Yeah, it's too tame and dry, but the bass guitar sounded killer, and the tunes were well written rock songs if nothing else.
As for a reunion tour - they won't come anywhere near me, so I don't really care. Record a new album that's a combination of Reek through Swansong and I'll buy it.

Agreed 100% on what to hope for if they recorded an album; it's a tough call on whether they can go back to that unreal aggression from almost 20 years ago, considering Bill Steer's basically been playing 70's blues-rock for the past few years now. Although, if Napalm Death can still shred, maybe these boys still can. If it were me, the energy would come the minute I picked up the guitar and started playing "No Love Lost" :)

I hope they come back FOR GOOD. Don't just do a tour, record a new album and carry on forever. I love them. I saw them live on the Heartwork tour, they were amazing.
Michael Amott didn't play on Swansong. Carlo Regadas did. So he didn't "spend time in the studio and then walked away thinking it sucked". He just thought it sucked.
same year bro, but I was in the stampeed in London
what-a-fucking tour though man

These rehearsals took place almost a year ago, in October-November 2006. Later on I guess it didn't work out all in all. So this news ain't so new.
Yeah, I guess reissues are on the way with some video stuff as bonuses, but that's quite it. Guess , Mike has been the only one into reviving what'd been dead for more than a decade.

My fave Carcass albums are "Necroticism" and "Heartwork." However the fact that Bill Steer has criticized Extreme Metal as music for kids and stuff like that make me doubt about the true reasons behind the reunion.
"It seems they think it's a little bizarre that I'm still doing the metal thing full-on." <-- this speaks by itself.
Anyway good luck for them, and that this reunion turns to be something sincere.

I don't think this will happen. Amott be to busy with Arch Enemy, they have an album coming out next week, and I don't think Walker or Steer have any desire to do this.

They want to re-release the Carcass stuff, and NOW they go back and pay Carcass what they owe - That douche Dig has been ripping off the bands for years. Carcass might see the old money now, but who knows if they'll ever see the new money - FACT: Earache sells their tunes online, and NONE of the bands have it written into their old contracts, so NONE of those bands see a cent from the sales, particularly the older/inactive acts.

this is awesome news. i'm just worried that all you push pit meat heads are going to ruin seeing yet another classic band for me and any old schooler that remembers when shows were fun and safer. i saw them on "Symphonies" and "Necroticism" tours. I took Steer, Owen, and Amott out for vegan food. It would be great to finally hear the Swansong stuff live. I went to see Obituary last week for the first time since 1990. All I can say is that I remember classic death metal shows when circle pits reigned and a handful of people "did their thing" on the floor in the middle. If people fell, they got picked up. Now people go to shows to intentionally hurt people. maybe i'm just a brittle old pussy. but this band comes from a punk background, so y'all better recognize!
