HAGAR On VAN HALEN Reunion: Fans Will Be Disappointed Because Of MICHAEL ANTHONY's Absence - Sep. 19, 2007
KNAC.COM's Jeff Kerby just finished speaking to Sammy Hagar for a feature interview scheduled to appear on the site this coming weekend. To pique your interest, Kerby thought this candid reaction from Sammy regarding the curent VAN HALEN reunion tour would do the trick:

KNAC.COM: I know you love playing music with Michael Anthony, so that being said, what does a VAN HALEN reunion mean to you without Michael Anthony….or David Lee Roth's original hair?

Hagar: I wouldn't do it without Mike. On the last reunion, and I'm telling you this straight up — this is stuff I've never really said actually — they wanted to throw Mike out then. Why? I don't know. I still can't understand why Ed [Van Halen] has it out for Mike. Mike is the nicest guy in the world, and he's an unbelievable player. He's also an incredible singer and a professional. Mike is a guy who goes out every night and does a perfect job — a 10 every night — it's not even a 9.5. Why would you want to get rid of a guy like that? I don't know what happened between them somewhere when I wasn't around, but I just said, "No, I won't do it without Mike." My manager said, "You put a gun in Mike's hand to negotiate with these guys." I said, “you're damn right because I'm telling you, the agency, the promoters and the band that I will not go out and do a VAN HALEN reunion show without Michael Anthony." Obviously, someone else doesn't feel that way because Mike isn't there. Honest to God — it's none of my business. If Eddie wants to play with his son, fine. I love my son too, but I got him a different job. (laughs) I just think that it should be Mike. They will do good without him, and it's a shame. At the same time, I just think the fans are gonna walk away with a little bit of a disappointment because Mike's a big part of that band."

quoted from the news article annoucing the van halen reunion tour -

"VAN HALEN announced the details of its long-awaited reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth on August 13. The tour kicks off on September 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Pre-recorded tapes will reportedly be used to recreate Anthony's backing vocals on the tour."

3 van halens plus the original lead singer.

Even though Dave isn't Dave circa 1980,
he's still better than Sammy. That will
be better right there.

None of the great trademark MA backup vox,
but it will be cool seeing Eddie's son, and I'm
sure people will be surprised how good he is.

Anthony was a great backup vocalist, but no
great bass player by any means, Eddie actually
played the lead bass intro on "you're no good"

yes, MA would have been better.
But Sammy not being there makes it better.

And Eddie seems to be in a better space than ever.

I'm there.

They can't use Michael Anthony's vocals on tape... or they'd have to pay him.

God... you people are fucking stupid.

That doesn't preclude them from recording background vocals without him... which is what I heard they did... Eddie, Dave and Wolfie recorded background vocals to supplement their sound.

Big deal... lotsa bands do it.

3 Van Halens and David Lee Roth? Sounds pretty damn f***ing great, but I knwo the true, original VH is Dave, Ed, Mike, and Al.

Ed and Wolf are doing well on the backups, and I am sure there is a singer helping too behind the stage.

Also, check out how great MA is at the RNRHOF performance with Spammy.

Sure the Hagar era was mixed, but we all have to admit, who LOOKS BETTER at this point and is not so ironically, healthier? Ed and Dave or Mike and Sammy.

Mike and Sammy both look 15 years younger than Ed and Dave. They probably will live longer as well considering the toll that Ed has put on his body over the years.

I don't think it was Sammy's fault they sucked so bad. It was Eddie's. Remember, he was venturing into keyboard territory on 1984, while DLR was in the band. And Sammy was a very respectable rocker before joining VH. Not Sammy's fault Van Hagar sucked.

Sammy makes GREAT tequila and is a decent human being.

COMMENT | Sammy jealous about this tour? Don't think so...

first, Sammy's been saying for the last 6 months that VH's best move is to do a reunion tour with Dave - check the backstage interviews at the RRHOF induction ceremony. Second, during the 2004 reunion tour with Sammy, the band was initially saying that they hoped they'd make more music after the tour. Then, as the tour went on and Sammy realized the kind of shape Ed was in and what an asshole he was, the story became, "well, we'll have to see what happens after the tour" then, after the tour, Sammy had enough of Eddie and walked. So no, Sammy's not jealous. Especially about the money this tour is going to make. Hell, after the sale of 80% of his interest in Cabo Wabo tequila, plus the money he's got from all his music, Sammy's got more money than Eddie, Alex and Dave combined.

I can guarantee I won't miss him, nothing against him and I do wish he were there but c'mon, if you want to be irreplaceable come up with a few bass lines that can't be learned by a kid who doesn't even play bass as his main instrument. I really am not knocking his bass playing, it was perfect for those songs but his attempts at soloing was painful and embarassing to watch.

Don't forget most people are morons, they honestly won't know there is a different bass player, I saw RATT last year with their new singer who had been in the band for 5 years at that point and people were still standing around me screaming, "Steven, I love you" - people are morons, he will be missed by only a small handful when it comes down to it and like it or not, Van Halen is Eddie and Dave, now Dave is someone I missed while watching Van Halen with that other guy, that's when I felt cheated, Red Rocker, that's funny.

Look, Sammy just got an $80M payday for his tequila company. He has encouranged an original VH reunion and has said he isn't interested. By most fans' own account, the weak shows of the 2004-05 tour were due to Ed being drunk...

I don't begrudge VH wanting to play with Wolfgang. If that is the impetus it takes to make Eddie keep his shit together and not be a fucking drunk, so be it. ...But don't blame Sam and Mike for what's going on. Mike had been taking shit since the Cherone era. Kudos to Hagar for standing by his friend. Hopefully Sammy and Mike will ditch the Waboritas and bring in some guys like perhaps Izzy Stradlin, Ronnie Montrose, Tommy Skeogh, or other established rockers and stop this silly party band Waborita crap and make a real record.

He has his own thing going now, shit he would have loved doing a Sam and Dave thing, not for the money, but for the fans. But Sammy is a cool cat and he hope they have a great tour. ...is that every talks about the importance of MA's back p vocals, suggesting the band shouldn't go without him. Yet, Van Halen moved on without their original frontman for many years. DLR vocals gave VH an edge. For those old enough to remember when they first came on the scene, DLR's voice made them seem punky or edgy. Very unusual for the time. Yet, the band went on without those.

Now we are debating the validity of the band going on without MA. C'mon, everyone's a hypocrite. Sammy should have nothing to say - he took over from a member of the origial VH. He was like Wolfie - a replacement.

I'm 34...and, from about age 12, Eddie (and the other VH guys but, particularly Eddie) has been a hero of mine. By the time, I got into VH, Dave had already quit and Sammy was about to come on board. I came in right in the middle of things. As a consequence, I loved both singers and, frantcally bought & devoured the albums from both eras. I've even been in a fist fight (in my teens) because some A-Hole dissed the mighty Van Halen.

However, I'm almost sorry that my Cousin, Jason (RIP) introduced me to the band via "1984." I'm ashamed/sickened that lifelong heroes could repeatedly shit on everything they've established... He/they had a major chance to save face, regroup & come back strong here. What happened? Eddie, Alex & Dave diss Mike, (a loyal, hard working, solid guy) ...over what? Some bullshit? Eddie is 52 fuckin' years old!!! People have shown more respect to mortal enemies than he has to Mikey/Van Halen fans.

Why not bury the hatchet, do a "proper" reunion and, invite Wolf out to jam, etc...? I mean, BE a fuckin man for God's sake... but no..

SO, fuck this waste of money. They sounded "ok" in the rehearsl footage but, not "phenominal" like some delusional folks here are telling themselves. I've jammed with cover bands who put 1000 times more energy into those songs than they are. (and, I busted my ass to make sure my vocals sounded as close to the originals as possible. I can probably do a better impression of a "studio enhanced Dave" than DAVE can.)

So, screw this... No $$$ from me. This is too little, too late. I will not endorse people I can't respect. But, if Sammy/Mike come anywhere near, I'll be there...

I know most people "are morons" & "don't care" as a previous post pointed out... but, Eddie & Co. have taken a shit all over the joy that the music once brought me...and, I'm sorry, morals/integrity still mean something to me.

a rock 'n' roll legend and Mill Valley Tequila entrepreneur, is selling an 80 percent interest in his Cabo Wabo Tequila to Gruppo Campari, the world's seventh-largest spirits company, for $80 million, the two sides said Monday.

Hagar created Cabo Wabo Tequila to serve patrons at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He began to distribute it in 1999. Last year, his company sold 147,000 cases, making it the second-best-selling premium Tequila in the United States, he said in a telephone interview.

"I'm jumping up, I'm excited,'' Hagar said of the opportunity for worldwide distribution by a company that does business in 190 countries.

"Oh, hell, did I just say 'jump'?" Hagar then said. "Wrong era! I meant to say 'Right now,' I'm rich as dirt!' or maybe, 'Love just walked in' with some cash! Can you change that, brother? Muchas gracias!"

because he's obviously paying off a lot of people to extol how great he is. Hagar was, at best, a marginal solo artist before joining VH. He is remembered for one song (yes, ONE) from his solo career: "I can't drive 55." After that he was probably good for one more album and then permanent residence in the cut out bin if not for becoming Roth's replacement.

He had one memorable song that hit a nerve with people and it's not like he was the greatest lyric writer ever (not that Roth is either). "123 Lockbox"? "I can't stop loving you." "Poundcake?" I can't imagine Paul McCartney sitting in his house, hearing these songs and immediately going to Lennons grave, taking a steaming dump on it, picking it up and scrawling the word "hack" with his feces on the headstone because of the brilliance of Hagar's lyrics.

Eddie treated the 2004 the way it deserved to be treated: with drunken indifference to that era. I got my ticket for $10 off a scalper and it was overpriced by $11 for what I saw which was a hybrid of Ronald McDonald, Big Bird and Hulk Hogan (that's red and yellow for anyone who isn't following) jumping around like a retarded member of the backstreet boys
