Man Dies After 'Crowd-Surfing' At SMASHING PUMPKINS Show
- Sep. 26, 2007
CBC News reports that a Richmond, British Columbia (Canada) man who died Monday night (September 24) at a SMASHING PUMPKINS rock show in Vancouver was crowd-surfing before he collapsed, the provincial coroner's service said Tuesday.
The coroner found no trauma to the man's head or any other part of his body. The cause of death won't be known for weeks until an autopsy and a toxicology report are complete.
The name of the man, 20, has not been released.
Vancouver police said about 3,800 people were packed into the Pacific National Exhibition forum for the concert. A mosh pit and crowd-surfing — where a concert-goer gets tossed from person to person above the crowd — were part of the show.
"A couple of people dragged a male out of the mosh pit toward security," police spokesman Const. Howard Chow said Tuesday night. "They called first aid right away. They tried to resuscitate him … They were unsuccessful."
Laura Ballance, PNE's media relations officer, said crowd-surfing is allowed at concerts at the site, but discouraged by security.
"This is an extremely unfortunate situation and there will certainly be discussion within the organization," she told CBC News, adding it would be useless to speculate on the cause of death.

This is a lesson for those who crowd surf at Smashing Pumpkins.

Everybody knows how brutal those Smashing Pumpkins mosh pits can get. I went in once and lost my gold-plated rope necklace. I was too scared to go back in.

Let this be a lesson for all the young people. Don't take your life into your own hands. Avoid Smashing Pumpkins concerts at all costs.
Seriously though, nobody ever dies at good concerts. It's always Smashing Pumpkins of Papa Roach or Linkin Park.

This is a lesson for all the idiots who crowd surf at ANY show. If you're at a Smashing Pumpkins show, we can already presume that you have no sense.

I do seem to remember a one concert where I saw a guy in a wheelchair crowd surfing.

I'm with chief-yolli
I like mosh pits and crowd surfing - as long as it's done in a safe manner it can be an extremely fun activity.
The problems arise when you get losers "thrasing" around throwing elbows and fists. That sort of stuff isn't funny.

Mosh pits are fine, I just don't go in them anymore.
Crowd surfing pisses me the fuck off. I always hated being in the front row and getting kicked in the back of the head by some assclown who just feels the need to crowd surf. I can tell you that I've brought down my fair share of them... Either by pulling them down or, when I get hit in the back of the head, they get hit in the nuts...
chief-yolli - I could not agree with you more. That is some of the most refuckingtarded shit I've ever seen. I was at SOTU this year in Chicago and saw a bunch of emo kids doing that. It just made me want to go down there and pop them in the head and show them what a real mosh pit looks like, but I figured since they're emo they would just get hurt and cry.
Oh well... But yeah - crowd surfing = teh gay.

Lets hope this isnt used as as stupid excuse to ban crowdsurfing, moshing etc on health and safety grounds, if he suffered no trauma its most likely be some pre-existing undiagnosed medical condition.
Oh and those people who swing there fists and feet around windmill kicking like a retard in a ballet school piss me off

Well this may sound a little insensative but i got to tell ya when it comes to crowd surfing their is time ya got to pay the price. I gone to alot of shows where moshing is quite apparent and I have never thought to mosh i just jump up and down in one place, not to affect anybody around me.
Why the Fuck is alright to hurt someone just for your selfish enjoyment of it. As mentioned above I have been to a lot of hardcore shows where this happens quite frequently. I don't agree with it but as i said if you want to do tthis shit be my guest. but don't expect me to pick up your ass up off the floor!!

When Billy C. wouldnt even let people surf. He told a Dallas crowd I was in one time that if anyone surfed or moshed, he would stop right then and there and not play anymore. Needless to say that was the un-liveliest bunch of people I've ever seen a concert with.

I feel like planting a tree for this guy. It's such a shame because you never know when your time will come...I mean to die at a SM concert would be way cool and to get your story in the news is awesome, but if you are stupid, then your just plain stupid. I'll bet the dude died smiling...think about it.

It's enough to make me want to bring a chaingun and go Rambo on those mothafuckers. I hate crowd surfing with a passion and all they do is ruin the show for other people.

The article implies that he was killed surfing despite mentioning that there was no signs of any physical damage.
It's very scarey how easy it is to mislead the majority of people on here (and maybe in general)
I was present for that show, I saw them drag the dude out, and all these paramedics and police ran him out on a stretcher. It would have been impossible for the guy to "fall" from "crowd surfking" as everyone was packed in so tight there was no hope for a hole for him to fall thru. But there were SO many tweakers at that show that I can probably bet my life savings the guy had an overdose.
And for the record, the show BLEW!

If getting kicked in the head makes you feel more manly and gives you an erection then there's something wrong with you. I go to a show for the MUSIC, not for some stupidass pieces of shit that want to focus on everything but the music. Get the fuck out of the show if you're going to be that way.

the word MISLEADING comes to mind!
so he was crowd surfing. whats the worst that can happen? unless you take a stage dive and miss and crack ur head (impossible at a show like SP) , or you took some brutal shots in the pit (which the headline mentions nothing about), orrrrrrr some fool sucker-puches u or jabs u with some kinda sharp object..... unless something like that happened - crowdsurfing is SAFE! (albeit highly annoying)
Why then does this article try to imply its dangerous?!

I can see it now.. this is Bernadette O'Brien all over again. Billy's gonna get all pouty and proclaim that no one should crowd surf because one person died. Meanwhile, his music is so depressing and terrible that hundreds, if not thousands of people end up killing themselves and others while listening to it.
I was at this show in Vancouver, and it was pretty rough in the crowd for the 1st 1/2 of the set, but there actually wasnt that much crowd surfing. Its too bad that his death is linked to this. Smashing Pumpkins played a great great over 2h set, pretty tragic though.

A good pit at a good show only makes the show more intense, in effect better... All the energy from the crowd releasing all their anger and frustrations in a positive way, having fun with the guy next to you, beating the shit out of each other, and then hugging afterwards... all that energy goes straight to the band, and they feed it right back at you, and it just goes back and forth, man.
It sounds barbaric, and maybe it is, but hell man, it's all in the fun of having a good fuckin' metal show.
All the best shows I've ever been to, had really intense pits, and plenty of crowd surfing.
If you don't like pits or surfing... just step back and watch the show just like you say you wanna do, and leave the first 1 to 10 rows of people for the ones who can handle being crushed by the dozens or hundreds of people pushing up to the barrier, and leave some space behind that for the guys like me who will never go to a good metal show and not go in the pit.
Injuries are just memories of how fuckin' good that show must have been in order to have got shit-kicked so bad.

To everyone who don't like stagediving and moshpits. What the fuck are you doing in the front?? Buy seat tickets and shut the fuck up instead, if it's a big problem for you, or maybe you should consider if it's the right genre for you. Try out a Justin Timberlake concert instead.

COMMENT | To All Who Blame Smashing Pumpkins... posted by : faltered 12/14/2007 4:13:07 PM
I don't see how anyone can blame a band who has taken a stance against moshing and even takes the time before their set to comment that they disapprove of it. Direct quote from Billy Corgan: "I just want to say one thing to you, you young, college lughead-types. I've been watchin' people like you sluggin' around other people for seven years. And you know what? It's the same shit. I wish you'd understand that in an environment like this, and in a setting like this, it's fairly inappropriate and unfair to the rest of the people around you. I, and we, publicly take a stand against moshing!" So before you blame someone foolishly, know your details. If you mosh it's YOUR responsibility to know what YOU are getting into. NOT the BANDS. If you climb a cliff it's not the gear companies responsibility for you to know what the hell you're doing. So enjoy the show and don't persecute people that actually SHARE your viewpoint... better yet, just get bent. You make me sick...
COMMENT | a link to better help you understand posted by : faltered 12/14/2007 4:22:14 PM
Here's a link to show a news article from May 17, 1996 that shows the same quote I posted from Billy Corgan being from sometime back in 1995. It also shows the bands disapproval of the situation when it was happening. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1434230/19960517/smashing_pumpkins.jhtml I'd also like to point out... I'm not really much of a Smashing Pumpkin's fan... I'd much rather listen to Spoken or Jack Johnson, though I stand disappointed that a band that wants to have safe shows is blamed for something they stand firmly against. Now you all should be promoting the moshing ethic of Smashing Pumpkins and flaming those of Lamb of God (go to youtube and search "Lamb of God" "Wall of Death" and you'll understand)
