RONNIE JAMES DIO On VIVIAN CAMPBELL: 'I Hope He F**king Dies'

A video clip of legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW, HEAVEN AND HELL) apparently calling ex-DIO and current DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell "a fucking asshole" and saying that "I hope he fucking dies" in reference to his former bandmate can be viewed below (video courtesy of celebrity-signing on eBay). The two-minute clip was shot on March 30, 2007 while Ronnie was signing autographs for fans after HEAVEN AND HELL's show at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
On the audio recording one fan can be heard telling Ronnie, "I saw Vivian Campbell about a year ago…" before Dio cuts him off by saying, "Oh, you poor son of a bitch. I hope he fucking dies. He's a fucking asshole." The same fan can then be heard telling Dio that "he [Vivian] said he wants to play [the RAINBOW classic] 'Man on a Silver Mountain' again" before another fan states, "I bet he wants to get back together." Shaking his head, Ronnie can be heard saying dismissively, "He's got two fucking chances. He's a piece of shit. You ever heard the things he ever said about me? He called me the most despicable human being that ever lived. I went, 'I thought I gave you a chance and made you somebody. And now you're playing with who? DEF fucking who?' There's a fucking rock band for you to fucking have diarrhea with."

I saw Def Leppard a couple of years ago here in Sudbury and was totally surprised and impressed with how good a concert they put on. Having said that, Campbell is a total a-hole. I've read more than a few interviews where he calls Dio nothing but a c((t and a few other choice names and how horrible a human being he was to work and live with. Also he stated on more than one occasion how he hates every piece of music he did with Dio and how he hates heavy metal and that Def Leppard is nothing like heavy metal. And then when I saw him in concert he used every heavy metal cliched pose in the book. This little snippet from Dio is the first negative thing I've heard him say about Campbell and this wasn't supposed to be in print or video unlike Campbell's comments to whatever music magazines I was reading. Unfortunately for Viv the only thing he's going to be remembered for is his Dio years because so far in his career that is the best thing he's ever done.

...........but lots of friends told me he was a total ass goblin, which is now obvious, Viv was on track to be a star from the start, Dio's just bitchin cos Viv blew him out to join Whitesnake after Dio stole him from Sweet Savage, hire a guy thats willing to leave his buddies for cash then what else do you expect?, Holy Diver is the best thing Dios ever been involved with and Viv was a big part of that, Dios never quite hit that high water mark since and I guess he's very bitter about that, what an ass!

No no sir, Viv joined Whitesnake quite a while after quitting Dio, it's not like he jumped ship from one to the other. When Viv bailed on Dio, John Sykes was in Whitesnake. And initially, Coverdale just hired Viv to be in the video. It was later on that the 1987 version of the band formed officially.

Actually, if you saw Metal: A Headbangers' Journey, and saw the Ronnie James Dio interviews, Ronnie continually bashes Gene Simmons saying "you hear Gene simmons patented the word oj? now everytime someone mentions the word oj he gets royalties on it or something" & my favourite one " yeah, gene would say he invented shoes too" so its only Gene & Vivian that he was ever said anything about.

Trouble is, Def Lep are just ok - Dio is best singer in rock ever (maybe with Gillan). Poor old Joe Elliott sings like a leaky gas heater - "Make lurve like a maaaaan!" Dio definitely has a point. Vivian was an unknown when he was asked to join Dio and then catapulted him to metal fame in just a matter of 2 albums. Very much like what Ozzy did with Randy Rhoads. I've met both Vivian and Ronnie and both were very cool to meet and talk to for a while. It does seem that Vivian has pretty much lost his metalness and Dio's hasn't wavered. Dio is definitely #2 on the Metal God Scale.
Can't we all get along?

Dio is great, but why do peoplehave to be stupid and say both dio and def lep where over after the 80's????? its just what happens, alway, people get older, some younger kids get in and play what supposed to be popular and get famous but are usually worse then the band they imitate but still manage to sell more. and what have sales anything to do with how good you are or the music???????? is Britney Spears then suddenly become the most talented singer or musician? or Nickelback for that matter? Dio looks and sounds (like that, is it Jersey?, accent!) more like a little mob boss than the man who sang songs like "Country Girl."
to mfiasco: you think Vivian was the weak spot? listen to "Rainbow in the Dark" or "We Rock" and think about what you said.
Vivian was an amazing guitarist way back. i don't know who's right in the this -- it's all about money (when is it not?) -- but they are both great.
Dio is a top-3 metal vocalist of all time and Vivian played on two of the greastest classic metal albums of all time.
Dio's comments about Def Lep were a riot. and he's right. they were once decent but have turned into a joke for middle-aged soccer moms who once wore spandex and probably still have big hair.

in Aarhus, Denmark. One of the nicest rock star I ever met. Me and two other people, were offered beer or cola, and he sat almost half an hour and talked to us. Very nice and very intelligent. Craig Goldie and Simon Wright were just as nice too.

What isn't always recognized is that both Viv and John Sykes were heavily influenced by Gary Moore. Some of Vivian's solos, particularly live with Whitesnake, were wholesale Moore pieces! He had to adapt his playing. He did NOT have to slag off the man who gave him his way out of Sweet Savage and relative obscurity. He also slagged off Whitesnake after getting the boot therefrom. Now he's in Def Leppard, who are mediocre. Even Shadowking and Riverdogs were way more interesting than Def Lep.
Yes, Dio's upfront about being a control-freak. You don't get THAT level of talent without a bit of an ego. But I'm old enough to remember Viv's departure - the first line-up change in Dio - and Ronnie didn't say a bad word about him until he'd endured 20 years of slaggings from his old protege. Let's 'beef air'!

Fact: Dio gave Vivian a chance to break out big.
Fact: Dio ripped Vivian off on tons of publishing; half of 'Holy Diver' was stuff Viv had played with Sweet Savage and Ronnie merely re-wrote melodies and lyrics. That's why Vivian is still bitter.
Fact: Ronnie reneged on his promise to make Dio a partnership rather than what it turned out to be: a boss & 3 employees.
Fact: Vivian had grown out/sick of metal by the mid 80's and was done with the whole dungeons & dragons shtick. So he quit. And Ronnie got pissed.
Fact: Both Vivian and Ronnie can be total assholes although Ronnie is careful not to slag people he hates in public/interviews. And he can't stand plenty of people, like Ozzy for example.

Last in Line was a better album (ok, EVEN better album) than Holy Diver. Bet that didn't have any old SS songs on it.
And Ozzy Osbore slagged Dio off for years. Why? Because he's a no-talent gibbon, and Dio's voice showed his up for being useless. I mean, Ozzy - he came up with Gillan, Plant & Rodgers. So he always sounded damn lame.

I always knew RJD was an eloquant dude, but he's always so polite and gentlemanly in his interviews. It's great to see him throw it down like this. ...makes him feel a little closer to us doesn't it? He's got his crosses to bear and hatchets to bury like we all do. ...I've never paid much attention to how Vivian C. is as a person, but IMO he's a shit replacement for Steve Clark. Def leppard should have hung it up after Pyromania anyway. They have 3 good albums and 1 good B-side from the Hysteria era... that's about all. Long live DIO!

Ha, so true. I've read alot of interviews where he hints at stuff about Sharon (Especially) and Ozzy, but doesn't let the cat out of the bag. Fact is, Ronnie is a world class musician, he may be one of those cancer sign dwarf control freak singers like Glenn Danzig is, but hey, He's still kicking ass at music after all these years. I think Vivian underestimated himself. Its like with George Lynch, can't these guys just join a band that makes kick ass metal and highlights their playing? Well GL is closer to having done that, but Vivian just got more and more wussified.
Def Leppard is probably a stable paycheck though. Better to be safe than risk playing stuff you truely enjoy.

The earlier poster had it right COMPLETELY. The fan who taped this and shared it should be ashamed. Ronnie stayed after the concert to sign autographs outside (he has been doing that for YEARS) and he was having a personal moment with his fans. He won't say these things in public, why? not because he is a coward, but he is a classy guy unlike Viv who has slagged him for years. Behind closed doors Ronnie wants his fans to know he doesnt appreciate that shit from Viv and speaks his mind, because those are his fans and he will be honest with them, more honest than with the media ffs!!! Viv has said terrible things about Dio I think all of us would have that opinion about him if we were in Ronnie's shoes. People who talk shit like that deserve it right back.

I remember Vivian ragging on Dio in a guitar magazine some years ago saying that "Ronnie used to make me ANGRY!!!" And then he goes on to Whitesnake to the pinnacle of rock stardom twenty years ago, then criticizes the whole "pop" thing of Whitesnake, pisses off Adrian Vandenberg and David Coverdale kicks him out of the band. So what does he do next? Viv joins the uber-pop Def Leppard!! What's going on?? Somehow makes you wish Rick Allen hadn't been driving crazy and kept his arm intact. Maybe Def Who would have been a straight on metal band as before....maybe not.

Vivian (isn't that a girl's name?) struck 1st...publicly disrespecting Ronnie, when Ronnie pulled him outta the gutter in Belfast and showed the world a fresh new guitar talent. The Dio/Viv albums are CLASSICS and nothing he's done with Def (we're not or ever were a heavy metal band...bullocks) Leppard will ever showcase his talents on guitar.

I remember Dio once said that "Viv was a pimple which had to be squeezed out"...or something like that.
One of the most important traits of Dio is his rock-solid honesty and realism. Dio speaks the truth and admits facts, HE IS NOT A FUCKING SELF-RIGHTEOUS LIAR!!! We the fans don't know (and even shouldn't know!!!) about every fucking little detail that goes on between bands and musicians. Why? Because it's just so fucking irrelevant compared to the music we have on record and on stage. But if Dio says Vivian was a big problem back then and had to be replaced by another guitarist, then that's it.
Asking Dio about Vivian during these days is stupid and a waste of time. Filming these kind of stupid Q&A situations secretly is even more stupid. Sending these out-of-order clips to the Youtube is asinine!!! If you film Dio face to face (secretly or openly), please at least give him the courtesy of asking decent and smart questions. Vivian Campbell belongs to the past. A big thank you for Viv for his guitar playing on the first 3 Dio albums and subsequent tours, he did an amazing job, at least I think so. But obviously he became a problem and Dio had to fire him and take Craig - what a great musician he is!!! - to the fold. Things develop and go on.
I think this clip (I didn't even watch it!!!) doesn't deserve to be on the Youtube and it most definitely doesn't affect negatively on Dio's class, authority, respect or presence. As a musician and a performer, Dio is a true professional and legend - in my mind, a heavy rock god. But as a human being even Dio has the right to speak his mind without any correctness bullshit, especially when the question is this stupid. Should he have said "Oh, Vivian is a good guy"? That would have made Dio a liar - and Dio is not a liar. Should he have kept his mouth shut or just say "No comment on that". I think "No comment" is a phrase commonly used by cowards and other losers, "No comment" is not for Dio.
And please, for all concerned: if you think you are genuine Dio fans, forget this nonsense, alright?!

no one has mentioned the last few sentences that come out of Ronnie's mouth here. Talking about all the guitar pick guards, he said, "Do these things ever stop?" Another guy, possibly Dio's assistant, said, "Are we done yet?", to which Dio replies, "Well, they're gonna be in a second, 'cuz I'm fuckin' out of here." Doesn't sound like he was so gentleman-like on that night to me. Sounds like an angry old man.
I always gave Dio massive amounts of respect for taking the high road. Sure, he slagged on Gene Simmons, but Gene deserves it and probably even got a laugh out of what Dio siad about him, because it was said in a light-hearted manner. The comments about Vivian Campbell in this video was pure visciousness, the likes of which I haven't seen from Dio before. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

All wrong. The guy which tell Dio about Vivian was wrong. Mr Dio was wrong too saying that words. The guy who filmed the episode and played in utube wrong too! Blabbermouth wrong with this "news" too. Very sad for all of us! Peace

Well, I'll say this: I think Ronnie James Dio is not only the best vocalist in Metaldom, He's also got the most common fucking sense. He's clearly never done a harder drug than marijuana and a few beers, he's never been arrested, he's never wrapped a car around a tree or done any of his Sabbath counterpart, Ozzy's, stupid ass shit. He recently did an interview admitting to a few hotel-room-trashings in the Rainbow days, however. He also rarely cusses onstage, speaking like the host of a classical music or Shakespeare presentation. So when he DOES go off on somebody they earned it. A lot of what he's saying about Viv Campbell now, he was saying about Tony Iommi and Butler when he left after Dehumanizer.
And Viv Campbell DID fuck up. He started cutting his hair short to be trendy and he always wanted to write in major-key modes, which Dio has little use for. He fucked it up half-way through Sacred Heart's tour and Dio fired him for Craig Goldy during Hear'n'Aid. Whitesnake and Dio both grew out of the Deep Purple "family" and so Viv C. got a second shot at being grafted to the vine of Metal Greatness but somehow that got fucked up, too. And Dio's right, Def Lep has been a trendy crap band since "Hysteria". Maybe part of it is the electronic drums that compensate for the drummer's missing arm, but overall, Dio's right. Viv lost the heart of a true metal musician decades ago!
