Reunited CARCASS Confirmed For Next Year's WACKEN OPEN AIR Festival
- Oct. 5, 2007
Reactivated British extreme legends CARCASS have been confirmed for next year's installment of the Wacken Open Air festival, set to take place July 31 - August 2, 2008 in Wacken, Germany. Also scheduled to appear are IRON MAIDEN (headliners), CHILDREN OF BODOM, AVANTASIA, KREATOR and SONATA ARCTICA.
Commented CARCASS bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker: "Well, they said it would never happen. In fact I said it would never happen. Then I noticed no one pays attention to what I say anyway and I sounded like an idiot...
"Summer 2008 will be the twentieth anniversary since the release of CARCASS' first studio album. It will be fourteen years since we last played live.
"We've decided to exhume the old corpse next summer at Wacken. The timing is purely coincidental — it's been a long journey to get to this point where myself, Bill Steer [guitar] and Mike Amott [guitar; also of ARCH ENEMY] have enough common desire again to make it possible. We're finally conceding to the demand that seems to be at an all time high and doesn't appear to be going away any time soon. Any past reasons we may have had for not wanting to do it, or thinking it was impossible, have simply dissipated in the face of overwhelming interest in us performing THOSE riffs for a generation of believers who never had the opportunity back in the day. We could say we're doing it for 'the kids' — but fuck that ! We're doing it 'cos it will be fun again to play the classic CARCASS tunes!!
"Of course, it would seem inappropriate for us to contemplate to do this without Ken Owen [drums], but I assure you he'll be there, and we'll push some sticks in his hands and make him play, plus we'll have a killer drummer to sit in and play HIS parts.
"Myself, Jeff Walker on bass and vocals, 'the semi-legendary' Bill Steer and Mike Amott on lead guitar and Daniel Erlandsson [ARCH ENEMY], filling in for Ken on drums look forwards to mutilating your hearing.
"And if we don't do it? Who else will overshadow the LED ZEPPELIN reunion?
"Ha!
"Prepare to rot and roll."
In a recent interview with MTV.com, Michael Amott stated about the possibility of CARCASS reunion, "It seems like it never goes away — like this ghost that's always hanging over me. It's nice. It's a pleasant ghost, because [CARCASS are] a band I'm proud of, because it was one of the better bands to come out of that style of music at that time. The band itself seems bigger now than when we packed it in [back in 1995]. I can't believe it."
"With [CARCASS], you have four people who have all moved on and do different things now," he said. "For the last few years, I've been quite open about [my desire to reunite CARCASS]. ... It's not a question of, 'Do I want to play this kind of music?,' because I still totally love metal. I would love to do it."
The ex-members of CARCASS hooked up in 2006 to rehearse (as first reported by BLABBERMOUTH.NET on September 18) for the first time in many years.
"We thought, 'Let's just try to get our schedules together, jam a little bit, and see if it's even feasible,' " Amott said. "The question always comes up in interviews, and we kind of all became intrigued ourselves, if it would actually work. So we met up, rehearsed for about a week, and by the end of the week, it sounded amazing."
He added, "The band wouldn't set out to write or record new material, because "the old stuff was just that good. It would just be a blast to go out and play those — dare I say it — classic tunes again, those riffs. It would be fun. Bill's guitar playing was amazing — he was one of my heroes before I joined the band. So yeah, I would love to do it again. I love that band, love the music. We'll see — maybe it would shut people up. Let's hope the CARCASS can come back."

Best music news so far this year. A carcass reunion, i cant fuckin believe it!!!! it really sucks that Ken wont be able to play, but at least he'll be there. And mike amott too. I hope they decide to tour too. Man im so happy to hear this.
Carcass returns and lays waste to all the metalcore rip-off bands. This will be awesome! I just hope they leave their legacy intact and don't try to do another album. Do what Emperor does: Play a few shows, make them special. It will be awesome to hear THOSE riffs live!

If there is one reunion which is worth it, its this one. Carcass simply went away a little too fast and left many of their fans gasping for a little more. No new album please! Just a good reunion tour and then bury the corpse forever. Sad thing that Ken will not be able to do it but it's not like he doesn't want to...
IS THE SHIT. I can say that was really fortunate to see Carcass in Mar. 94 in San Antonio and I was lucky enough to meet all of them and take pictures. Now they are back together SHIT. What else can be said. I agree they need to bring that shit to America ESPECIALLY TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7th grade, my friend Bob showing me one of the sickest album covers I'd ever seen of one of his tapes, Reek of Putrefaction. Flash forward, I pick up a promo of Carcass's new album HEartwork, changes my life at that point (94). i miss out on the tour but swear I'd see them again.
Now, hopefully I'll get my chance.
Awesome, best news all year in music, no shit.

Never thought I'd see the day but today is a great day in metal. Carcass finally reunited. Amen.

They were so far ahead of their time they fit perfectly with the likes of any and all of the current heavyweights such as, umm, wait...ahh as a matter of fact they dominate all! Congrats! feel the love now and we can all rot in piece!
COMMENT | What's the story on the drummer? posted by : BRINE B 10/5/2007 7:32:39 PM
I'm not hip to the history of Carcass, so what's the story on the original drummer not being able to play his parts? Why get someone else to do it instead of him playing the songs himself? Can he just not physically do it anymore?
What's up with that?

Ken suffered from a brain anurism I believe, he is one lucky mofo to still be alive, nevermind play the drums like a mutherfucker as he has shown he's capable of in the past. I love the fact that they'll be keeping him on in any capacity, as well as having Daniel Erlandsson kicking the shit out of the drums. This band is an amazing amalgumum of excellence that defined a whole genre. They deserve all the success they've earned over the years. To the true kings of the genre, HAIL CARCASS!!!!
I don't know about the' never do a reunion' statement. But I know the guitarist Carlo who was there for the last tour and album.
He was asked by Jeff if he wanted to do a reunion tour thing over a year ago.
He wasn't interested.

I heard it was Bill who didn't want the reunion as he was busy with his Clapton-esque guitar trio thingy. Whatever, somebody has seen the light and made a vast amount of dreams come true. Carcass is one of those bands that it's very very difficult to find anything bad written about them, and for good reason. Their legendary status is far more deserved than most bands I could mention.
Roll on next August... fuck, I just did a sex-wee...

I actually got the chance to talk to Michael after the Machine Head/Arch Enemy show in Toronto, and he said he's excited to get out and play the songs again. And apparently the rumours behind this were kept to a minimum because Jeff didn't think Michael would be willing to disrupt Arch Enemy's touring schedule to do a reunion tour. I guess he was wrong about that. I for one am pumped for this reunion.

Out of town and late to the thread, but just gotta say I saw Carcass in 94 in Washington DC on the Heartwork tour (w/Life of Agony opening on River Runs Red)...simply one of the best show's I've ever seen. Carcass played the fast parts faster and the slow parts slower for maximum impact. Crushingly heavy....heaviest band I've ever seen live (along with My Dying Bride years back).
Got to help unload Carcass' gear (I carried one of Owen's bass drums) because they were late to arrive. The band and crew were friendly and professional, and gave me and some friends merch for helping out.
As for Ken Owens, needs to be said he's not just a great drummer (still one of my main influences), but also a brilliant songwriter...some people still don't know he wrote or co-wrote a few of the opening tracks of Necroticism.
I think I'm gonna go shit myself now.

The best band that have ever been. The best team of virtuosic musicians. Exquisite composers. They are the ingredients to create something that, united, words cannot describe and the fact that they will be within our grasp is a miracle for younger people like me. Sorry to sound nerdy but it's true.
