'Global Metal' Documentary To Receive World Premier In Norway This Month
- Oct. 5, 2007
The organizers of the Bergen International Film Festival and Hole in the Sky have announced the world premier of the new documentary "Global Metal", on Thursday, October 18 at 19.00 at Bergen Kino in Norway.
In "Global Metal", directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn — the makers of the acclaimed documentary "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" — set out to discover the impact of heavy metal on the world's cultures beyond Europe and North America. The film follows metal fan and anthropologist Sam Dunn on a whirlwind journey through Asia, South America and the Middle East as he explores the underbelly of the world's emerging extreme music scenes — from Indonesian death metal to Chinese black metal to Iranian thrash metal. "Global Metal" reveals a worldwide community of metalheads who aren't just absorbing metal from the West — they're transforming it, creating a new form of cultural expression in societies dominated by conflict, corruption and mass consumption.
"Global Metal" is expected to include an interview with Israel's ORPHANED LAND and live footage from ORPHANED LAND's November 25, 2006 show at the Theatre Club in Tel-Aviv, Israel.
"Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" explored metal's impact and controversy over the past 35 years and featured interviews with Tony Iommi, Bruce Dickinson, Alice Cooper, Ronnie James Dio, SLAYER, Dee Snider, ARCH ENEMY, LAMB OF GOD, CANNIBAL CORPSE, EMPEROR and many more. The two-disc DVD set was released in North America in May 2006 and includes extended interviews, an interactive metal history chart, and a mini-doc on Norwegian black metal.

The only ones who need to take metal seriously are the people who make metal, not some money-sucker corporate metal labels, growing is not about selling or being the pretty awesome band of the moment, growing is something personal, and there is no band that is better than other or more metal, just because of where they come from, metal is something much more spiritual than that, but of course the occidental-alienated point of views doesn´t allow a lot of people to see that, they think its about fame and getting drunk and gettin laid and shit. All this military opression and social conflicts make a lot of this bands even more metal, there is a lot more to talk about, a lot more inspiration because of that.
Maybe nw metalhead should do a lot more research and find out that there are a lot of bands in the world that kick so much ass than big label signed-bands; and they are not american or european...

Glad to hear this! Samm Dunn did a great job in bringing the spotlight onto metal in "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey". And I'll be looking forward to seeing this new one on the impact on the world. Yes, we know a lot of this stuff already, but he is doing a great service to Metal by bringing awareness to metal in these documentaries, and its regardless of it bing a subject that every Metalhead has opinion about, its great to see a fellow metalhead like him with such passion and such dedication to go so far to spread the word and educate others about Metal. METAL, its not just music, its a way of life!

Even though nicothreat made the point nicely, I still feel the need to slap nwmetalhead's ignorant face with some reality...
Fuck some people are stupid. No one is scared of black metal bands, most of them are bigger posers then then the retarded scene kiddies. There was no bashing of black metal bands in M:AHJ anyway, so I don't know what you're bitching about.
Further, there's a good chance that those countries are producing 'top-end' metal, pretty much everywhere you go in the world you can find awesome metal, just because you living in your tiny elitist corner of the world hasn't heard of them, doesn't make a band any lower quality of musicians.
Now instead of proclaiming that everyone else knows, which ironicly clearly you don't, how about you go out, find out a few things about the world and expand your arrogant mind some?
