METALLICA Drummer: New Songs Are 'Heavier, But A Lot More Melodic' Than 'St. Anger' - Oct. 23, 2007
Tom Lanham of Examiner.com recently conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On how being a father is more demanding than anything else he has ever done in his life:

"Because having kids has changed everything in my life, from my relations to other people to my awareness of myself — you find yourself getting involved, getting passionate, paying attention, you find yourself for the first time in your life thinking of others and not just yourself."

On his strict regular daily ritual that begins when the rooster crows:

"The alarm clock goes off at 6:45 a.m., I get a quick cup of tea while I check the headlines in the paper, and then I, you know...start."

On how, hailing from Denmark along with his girlfriend Connie Nielsen, they're unable to vote in this country:

"But we pay taxes and have American kids. So we try to be as active in our community as we can be to contribute to our kids' futures. And instead of thinking about the next METALLICA record as your priority, you're thinking about your kids. And the METALLICA stuff kind of works its way around that."

On the band's decision to waive longtime producer Bob Rock for Rick Rubin for the new album (which is tentatively due in February):

"For our own sanity, our own creative survival, we needed to work with a different set of circumstances and dynamics. So we've been stripped of our defense mechanisms, and it's been very invigorating to be challenged again. Rick's taken everything we've known about making records and completely turned it upside down."

On working songtitles:

"There's one called '19', '10', 'German Soup', 'Glass Cow', and even 'Black Squirrel'. Just names that relate to where the idea came from, like Glasgow, Scotland became 'Glass Cow'. And when we don't have anything clever to call it, we just call it a number. They're just silly working titles."

On whether the songs are punchier, four or five minutes long:

"Well, the most of the intros are four to five minutes. I don't know — METALLICA and short songs just don't go that well together. But whereas 'St. Anger' was an exercise in over-pummelling the listener, these new songs echo some of our stuff from the '80s — long, epic journeys through different musical landscapes, heavier, but a lot more melodic."

On playing the Bridge School Benefit this coming weekend:

"When Neil Young calls, all you say is 'yes,' and 'when and where.' Neil has dedicated his whole life to helping others, so when he calls you don't ask any questions. All you do is show up."

I remember waiting for many CD releases when a band member said it sounds like a cross of their 2 best releases, and then being TOTALLY disappointed in what I've heard. What the hell do they care? 1. Areosmith followed 'Done With Mirrors", a totally shit record with two of their best.

2. U2 released two completely God awful records in "Zooropa" and "Pop", with a couple of really good efforts.

3. Although "Steel Wheels" was not the greatest effort by the Stones it wasn't half bad, especially after "Dirty Work"

Metallica is a band that fits in with the previous three. Yes they play metal, but they are one of the greatest rock bands of all time. They stand up with the stones, u2 and Aerosmith. They will be the next metal band inducted in the Hall of Fame, and their next album will be far better than the last 3. Now will we get another album like the first 4? or even the Black album? No, not quite, and you wouldn't want them to. The three remaining members are a lot older, a lot richer, and have a quite different things to be pissed off about. That's assuming that they're even pissed off at all. Besides, we already have one AC/DC. They've been making the same record since 1974, and get to only because every song is about pussy, liqour or both (wait a minute, that's a Rob Zombie tune, huh?) Metallica was always more substantial, and because of that, their music has had to evolve. If they rewrote 'Puppets" it would come off as fake. I have no idea what the new record will sound like, however I know that Rick Rubin won't let it suck, and that will definately be worth buying. oh, and before you haters start calling me a Metallica mark, i'll go ahead and call myself one. From the first time I saw them live opening for Ozzy in '86.

I hate it when they say they are going back to their 80s style. When they do that almost everyone is counting on it to sound just like "Puppets". Then it comes out and ends up dissappointing everybody even though it was obviously not going to sound like that in the first place. It wont be taken for what it is even if it actually is good. Although I have to say that even though I love Metallica lets face it Lars just dosnt really have it anymore. I still have a good feeling about this one. If it is any better than St. Anger its good enough for me.

Haven't they earned the benefit of the doubt? Oh, and I know this is a 'tallica thread not an Aerosmith one, but the posters defending Done With Mirrors are right. It's a great album - and Rock In A Hard Place is even better; both are waaay better than Nine Lives or Just Push Play.

All because Lars wanted to make his snare drum sound like shit. Besides THAT, Kirk never once put a melody into the songs, and James was using over-repetitive lyrics.

I think my ONLY favorite song on St. Anger was "Some Kind Of Monster" and "Shoot Me Again"

COMMENT | metallica fans--a short history
posted by : Paradosis
10/24/2007 11:31:10 AM

Kill 'Em All - Fans said it was too polished. It was nothing like their demos. The record company wouldn't let them use the title they wanted (Metal Up Your Ass). It's 1983, and Metallica is selling out according to at least a few fans.

Ride Z Lightning - What's with all the melodic and slow shit, fans asked? This prompted the well-known defense of the band by Cliff when he said "We play what we want to play, and if thats selling out, then whatever". So it's the mid-80's, and the band is already being accused of selling out by enough fans that they feel that they need to publically respond.

Master of Puppets - Most fans considered this a great--but even with this one there were still some complaints. Some said that--as far as album structure, song structure, etc. goes--it was almost the same album as Ride The Lightning, except that the songs on Ride were better. Some also said that the material and production were getting less and less raw as time went on--in essence, that Metallica was losing touch with their roots.

And Justice For All - The fans said... yawn... zzz. Oh, sorry, I fell asleep during Eye of the Beholder. Or was it And Justice For All? In any event, fans said that the songs were too long, too stretched out, too boring. And who deleted the bass from the mix?

The Black Album... - Do I really need to rehash how the fans slammed this record, along with the next three? I think that's info that everyone already has (if not, reread back over this thread for a primer).

The point of all of this is that Metallica has always had fans criticizing their music. Fans have felt alienated since 1983. Like the material or hate it, I think they still play what they want. If all they wanted was money, or fame, then I'm sure they would have come out with something a bit more accessible than St. Anger.

TRUE......

but that opinion is shared by probably 90% of the metal community.

One thing that is a FACT though is that Load and Re-Load are hard rock/alt albums not metal! So if your judging them by that standard some may like these albums I guess. Comparing them to the sheer brilliance of Master and Ride which most metal-heads do than they are indeed piss poor!

Are you living in Mars? Metallica can be many things except irrevelant.
I was in their first European concert this last summer and no one there agreed with you, they fuckin' owned.

As for people who complain about james' voice and say that Mustaine is much better, I advise you to buy a new set of ears.
Mustaine sounds like a BITCH singing like he ALWAYS has.
I could never really enjoy megadeth just because of that BITCH singing, but that's just me. Don't you wonder why there's no one left from the original line-up. Band-members are like men on a whorehouse, they cu(o)m(e) and go, eheh!

For those who say that black album is bad, I say that you don't know what you're saying.
That album is simply one of the greatest and influential METAL albums of all times, some even said that it was just hard rock, ahahahah, how far can you go?
An album isn't bad just because it's different from the previous ones, if you really appreciated music you'd agree with me.

You can have a piece of shit, screaming at another piece of shit, and that is more melodic than St. Anger. That doesn't say much, but one important tidbit. Lars standard is inherently and instinctively set relatively low as he mutters "new songs" and "St. Anger", in the same sentence.

All this pseudo optimism he's trying to exude, as he foams at the mouth about grandiose jam sessions, is all too clear that he is fooling no one and this album is just going to be the continuation of the falling from grace state they've subjected themselves to since the cheese fell off their cracker, namely, after TBA.

Metallica have been on a steady downslope since TBA, and as time works against them, they are plummeting even more rapidly. Even long time fans are becoming increasingly aware of this fact. Metallica are in a state destitution and Rick Rubin can't save this train wreck. It's going to be ugly.

I find it hard to believe so many people vehemently bash Metallica on here ...but, at the same time, so many Blabberfucks are DEFENDING VAN-douchebag Halen and, their halfass, oldies tour. Metallica haven't disappointed me in the way Eddie & crew have... not by a longshot...

I can't wait for the new Metallica cd. "St Anger" is the only Metallica album I'm not very fond of...and, even then, I like a few of the songs... (Frantic, Shoot Me Again, The Unnamed Feeling)

Fuckin' be pissed at the 7 trillion shitty ass bands out there now that any jackass can release an "album"... NOT metal veterans who've contributed as much as Metallica has...

Fuck bandwagon-riding sheep...

if you're going to make long songs, make them good. not long songs just for the purpose of making an 80 minute record. most of the songs on st. anger could've been cut in half. and you better throw in a dvd or something if you expect me to buy it.
