METALLICA: Entire 'Bridge School Benefit' Acoustic Performance Available - Oct. 28, 2007
Fan-filmed video footage of METALLICA's acoustic performance last night (Saturday, October 27) at the 21st annual Bridge School Benefit at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California can be viewed below (courtesy of xamievilx). Photos of the band's show can be found at Photographn.com.

The group's setlist was as follows:

01. I Just Want To Celebrate (RARE EARTH)
02. Please Don't Judas Me (NAZARETH)
03. Only Happy When It Rains (GARBAGE)
04. Brothers In Arms (DIRE STRAITS)
05. Disposable Hereos
06. All Within My Hands
07. Turn The Page (BOB SEGER)
08. Nothing Else Matters

In his review of last night's concert, Shay Quillen of The Mercury News wrote, "The band would have been better served by picking just one of the covers — ideally 'Brothers in Arms', which featured some nice guitar work from Kirk Hammett — and using the remaining time to explore more METALLICA material in the stripped-down acoustic setting. Hetfield's interpretive singing is not the band's strong suit."

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told Examiner.com in a new interview that the band's upcoming album will be "heavier" yet more "melodic" than 2003's controversial "St. Anger". Ulrich explained, "Whereas 'St. Anger' was an exercise in over-pummeling the listener, these new songs echo some of our stuff from the '80s — long, epic journeys through different musical landscapes, heavier, but a lot more melodic." When asked whether the new songs will be shorter, in the four-to-five minute range, Ulrich said, "Well, the most of the intros are four to five minutes. I don't know — METALLICA and short songs just don't go that well together."

Although none of the songs have official titles yet, Ulrich revealed that some of the "silly" working titles included "19", "10", "German Soup", "Glass Cow" and "Black Squirrel". Ulrich said the names "relate to where the idea came from, like Glasgow, Scotland became 'Glass Cow'. And when we don't have anything clever to call it, we just call it a number."

The new METALLICA album is tentatively due out in February of 2008.

01. I Just Want To Celebrate (RARE EARTH)

02. Please Don't Judas Me (NAZARETH)

03. Only Happy When It Rains (GARBAGE)

04. Brothers In Arms (DIRE STRAITS)

05. Disposable Hereos

06. All Within My Hands

07. Turn The Page (BOB SEGER)

08. Nothing Else Matters

that nazareth cover is pretty cool. I just always find myself wishing that they'd really go all out and arrange a badass Orion acoustic or something like that. They haven't gone that extra mile for me for a while, I'm pretty optimistic about Rick Rubin kicking them into shape though. That's exactly what he does best

that cover of Only Happy When It Rains sounded so rubbish I actually decided I wouldn't give the rest of the setlist a listen. Anyone saying his voice sounds good in that song must be tone deaf. Like, they have to be. Sorry kids, but that was terrible and makes me think he can't sing. If I heard them for the very first time in a pub and they sang that song the same way, I'd tell them to quit while they're ahead.

Having said that, it is fan filmed, so maybe the quality is terrible but regardless, that was VERY bad!

That was horrible! Why do these guys have show us that their into art, jazz, blues, skydiving, wine making, cigars, parenting and covering other kinds of music? Sure I like different kinds of music, and I don't do the things I used to do. But, Masters is still my favorite album of all time. I realize people grow and need to do try different things but what are you proving to us,your fans by doing these covers? Ok guys your very smart and your not rivet heads drinking beer playing metal ...we get it. Garbage and Dire Straits wouldn't cover your songs why are you covering theirs?

Jeez, the camera guy here was either very drunk or epilleptic....he filmed the floor more than the band.

Anyhow, why is it that 90% of Blabbermouth posters are hate-mongering, elitist jackholes?

If Mastodon farted into a mic and released it, you'd all cum over yourselves in ecstacy. Yet Metallica sits down and pulls off an awesome, unique, fucking completely unexpected setlist that sounded AWESOME, and all they get are turds slung at them by malcontent chimps.

Blabbermouth should put a scroll up on the top of their homepage -- "SInce 1987, ALL Metallica hate, ALL the time!!"

to be compared to "Rodrigo Y Gabriela."
Not to be rude, but Rodrigo & Gabriela failed in their Heavy Metal band before forming their Acoustic Duo. It turned out that Acoustic music is what they are best at doing. Metallica on the other hand are a genuine Electric Metal/Rock band.
Why even compare the two bands? Just because an acoustic musicians are covering Metallica songs? It does not make them Metal.
Of course, professional Acoustic guitarists will rearrange any Rock song to fit their style better than if Rock musicians decide to rearrange their own songs Acoustically themselves.

Why are people critiquing this performance as though it's their latest release or something. It was an acoustic benefit concert - so take off your 'metal up your ass' hats for a moment and try to to view this from a different perspective. Most of the songs performed here are probably complete one-offs so it's natural that they lack the polish of a live version of a studio track. All credit for them not playing 'disposable heroes' and 'all within my hands' just as they would normally. Although we all obviously agree that the MOP version of DP is more successful, is it not better and much more interesting that they didn't just do an 'as-is' acoustic translantion of the original version, which would have just left us all thinking 'yeah this is good but where's the distortion?' I am impressed that they took the effort to transform the original into a complete different piece of music that actually works as an acoustic arrangement. By the way, the last thing I am is an unconditonal Metallica fanboy. I generally enjoy negative comments about the band more than positive ones as they tend to be more well-considered, but in this case I think people are simply missing the point...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fuck yeah, I 100% agree. This version is actually much better than the St. Anger version! I may burn a new Stanger with this version as the last track.

And I agree that Disposable Heroes was barely recognizable. They probably should have just written new lyrics and made it a completely new song, it was certainly different enough to be....but still, it SOUNDED great.

Anyone honestly trying to contend that Metallica sounded anything but excellent foir this show are obviously Metallihaters and IMO their words don't hold an ounce of water.

Real quick though- James has over the past few years, been a little too cocky with some of his comments on the mic and his vocals do seem uninspired as someone commented on earlier. I think the new album will be damn good....let's hope. Can someone please talk to James about his grandfatherly haircut...enough...I know its "all about the music, man" I get it, but he looks ridiculous. Metallica always does what the f*ck they want, that's why I have always stuck with 'em. I love that they dare to fail, and try something different. It doesn't always work, but that's what makes it even more of an adventure.

Anyone that doesn't understand that, then give up on them, it's ok, it's popular to do. Go listen to Slayer, they will always be there for you, and fullfill your need to hear the same shit over and over.

And it looks like they've been experimenting with a bunch of different artists' songs (that's some Rick Rubin shit. Do you think Johnny Cash would've found Nine Inch Nails Hurt on his own...) I hope we get studio versions of all those songs as B-Sides or something. A full-on electric version of that Garbage song would sound great. And I hope Rick Rubin gets them to do Bruce Springsteen's "Adam Raised A Cain."

No, the guys praising the fuck out of everything "'tallica" do nowadays are not the hard core metal heads. Think about it, 10 years ago this band released Load and Reload. The hard core metal fans got into Metallica during the time of the Flemming Rasmussen produced classics - 20 years ago.

Btw, being a hard core metal fan doesn't make me close minded, and that leads me to www.blackviolin.com:

Why isn't it fair to compare current "'tallica" to Rodrigo Y Gabriela? First off, it's never a shame to "fail" in the music business. It doesn't diminish your artistic efforts at all. Or do you think artists like Nevermore or Devin Townsend "failed" because they are not as successful as current "'tallica"?

Secondly, Rodrigo Y Gabriela are TWO persons, and yet they are more capable to recreate the spirit of classic Metallica compositions like Orion acoustically than the FOUR guys in current "'tallica" are. How is that? Watch the Seattle 1989 performance of To Live Is To Die again, they once were able to pull it off brilliantly.

And there are plenty of rock and metal bands who can play their material acoustically and make it sound great. Check out the three acoustic bonus tracks on Testament's Live At The Fillmore album for a start.

Now playing: Opeth - Still Day Beneath The Sun
