'Metal That Sounds Like Other Metal': 'Volume VIII' And 'Volume IX' Posted Online - Oct. 29, 2007
A registered YouTube user who goes by the name "BakNBlack" has posted the eighth and ninth in a series of clips featuring hard rock/heavy metal tracks that sound like songs by other artists.

Says "BakNBlack": Y'ever hear a song and go, 'Man, that sounds just like...'? Well so did I. In fact, I found songs that not only sound like other songs, but they may as well practically BE those other songs!"

He added: "'Metal That Sounds Like Other Metal' is for ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. As a drummer in a rock band, and a songwriter, I make no claims about anyone 'ripping' anyone off; there's only eleven notes and only about fourteen keys that don't suck on guitar. This is 'Metal That SOUNDS Like Other Metal', not 'Metal Ripping Off Other Metal'."

Watch "Metal That Sounds Like Other Metal - Volume VIII" and "Volume IX" below. Previous installments can be viewed here ("Vol. VI" and "Vol. VII"), here ("Vol. V"), here ("Vol. II" - "Vol. IV") and here ("Vol. I").

Some of these songs are bad examples. But i think most bands are not trying to rip others work but it just comes out that way. As a song writer myself, i have experienced writing a riff and then a month later hearing a new song which has a really similar riff in it.

You know, sometimes these do sound alike, and then sometimes there's like maybe part of a chord progression or a note or two that's close, but every now and again he just seems to be hearing things that I don't.

And the funny thing about the Alice Cooper/Nelson one is, BOTH songs have a similar riff to "Sweet Jane" by the Velvet Underground, and that came out before the Alice song. Think this guy's overdoing it sometimes.

I've seen all of these now and it amazes me how retarded these are. WOW The Mechanix sounds like The Four Horsemen? I never knew that! The story behind that situation has only been told to us about a thousand times, I need to hear it another thousand for it to process fully.

And the ones where the Kreator riff was compared to Smells Like Teen Spirit along with all the comparisons with bands playing the open strings are just idiotic.

...Gamma ray: Land of the Free II (It will be released in about 3 weeks but the promo is already in the Internet) and count how many Maiden riffs ripped off can you find, I have found about 6-7 including Clairvoyant, Heaven can Wait, LotLDR,...etc

most of you take these way too seriously. of course some riffs will sound like others (and some not so much).

...keeps getting compared to Maiden (for Last Resort), but this guy, for some reason, overlooks the obvious - Hallowed Be Thy Name.

Kurt Cobain said himself that riff was closer or basically "More Than A Feeling"by Boston or "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen.

I would change that to:
few are clear rip-offs, most are stretched coincidences.

I'd like to hear this guy (or someone) put together the most ripped-off riff, showing 12 or more instances of the same idea.
I know it's out there.

Yippie another!!

As he said, it's not really rip-off he's seeking, but songs that sound alike.

Anyway... it's mostly for fun :).
