OZZY OSBOURNE Says He's Been 'Suffering Terribly' From Illegal Music Downloading - Nov. 1, 2007
Cameron Adams of Australia's Herald Sun recently conducted an interview with Ozzy Osbourne. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On becoming an unlikely small-screen star and kick-starting the now ubiquitous celebrity reality-TV genre:

"The phenomenon that happened from the show was that a lot of people who watched it didn't realize I was still an active rock and roll singer.

"They thought I was an ex rock star, or they had no idea who I was. I'd be walking down the street and someone would say 'What are you doing in this town?' I'd tell them I was doing a show, and they'd say 'What kind of a show?' What the f---? 'A rock and roll show.' Idiots.

"I believe the trick of 'The Osbournes' was it was edited brilliantly. If you have a camera crew walking around your house from 6am to 3am the next morning, and hidden cameras as well, every single day, that's hours and hours of tape.

"People would stop me and say 'Who writes your scripts?' I'd say 'What are you talking about?' It was real. That's why it worked. But I have to say we had a bit of fun with it, trying to keep people guessing."

On whether he will write his own memoir:

"I've been offered a book deal, but I don't want to do a book. My memory isn't what it used to be. Since I had my bike accident (he broke several bones in 2003), the medication I'm on affects my short-term memory. But I can now remember the phone number of my ex-wife's mother.

"But, I mean, it's so lame now, the f---ing Alamo, the bat, that was 25 years ago. We all think 'Why the f--- did I do that stupid thing?' Life has a good way of kicking you in the balls when you least expect it."

On wife/manager Sharon's battle with colon cancer being the kick he needed to help him sober up:

"Looking back I think I had a mental and physical breakdown. The only regret I do have from the TV show is that my wife suffered terribly getting over the cancer, but whether we did the TV show or not she'd have still had the cancer.

"She's terrible at taking direction but great at giving direction. I can't control her. If I say don't, she does it twice as much. She's my wife, I love her to death. I was so happy for her. She got cancer, she fought hammer and tongs to beat it and she deserves whatever she gets.

"But I worry continuously about Sharon. Since she's got over the chemotherapy and got the all clear she's doing twice the work she's ever done."

On battling lower record sales with his new album, "Black Rain":

"I've been suffering terribly from people downloading it. If they don't find something to stop it, people won't be able to make records. There won't be any new bands. How are they going to survive?

"I'm an old-timer, I've been doing it 40 years now, but new bands are going to suffer. It's ridiculous, you could be doing it for nothing.

"Sharon said I'd be astounded to find out how many bands are touring because you can download a record but you can't beat a rock show.

"I've never done in a long time as many live shows as I'm doing now. This year I've done 90 shows.

"I mean, I ain't getting any younger. Sharon says to me 'Just stand there'. I can't just f---ing stand there! I'm a moving target. People would aim their can of beer at my head!"

On whether he's entertaining the notion of retirement:

"I did try that but I've still got life in my bones. I'm still selling lots of records. If there comes a day when I'm playing to empty clubs, what's the point after I've done what I'm doing? It seems to be getting bigger and bigger.

"I've been doing it at the level I'm at now for a lot of years. There have been ups and downs along the way, like any career, but I've survived it physically and professionally. All I know is I'm here today.

"I'm either incredibly lucky or a survivor. To survive you don't have to be strong. A lot drank and used more drugs than I did. Some are dead. Then there are some who didn't do as much drugs and alcohol as I did. Some lived, some died. I've always said that when I die it won't be from natural causes, it'll be some rare bird who's s--- on me and given me some disease no one's heard of."

Ozzy says:-
"I've been suffering terribly from people downloading it. If they don't find something to stop it, people won't be able to make records. There won't be any new bands. How are they going to survive?

Then he says:-

The only people suffering terribly are the people that actually paid for Black Rain. Sorry Ozzy, the album kind of stinks. I downloaded it. Then I erased it. I couldn't even get past the first song. The biggest mouths complaining about the "illegal downloading" are people who haven't made a decent album in years and want people to spend money on the garbage they've been creating lately. Halford is the exception, because Angel Of Retribution was awesome.
Cut a 45-minute album with Tony, Geezer, and Bill. Then I'll give you my money Ozzy.

Ozzy, downloading isn't going to kill new bands. It's proven to help them. Most of these newer bands just want to be heard. For newer groups, there is SOOOO much music out there to "compete" with. If someone downloads, let's say Mastodon's album, they'll most likely go to their concert when they tour. They'll probably buy the actual CD for quality sound and artwork. And they'll buy merchandise like T-Shirts and whatever if it's quality and worth it. People that truly love music will buy music. Period.

What Ozzy was trying to say is that Black Rain's sales are suffering, but the entire Ozzy & Sabbath back catalogue still sells very well.

For the record, the Jake E. Lee era was my favorite...

But anyway, this whole downloading argument has always been interesting to me. In 1999/2000, if you were a Rock artist speaking out against downloading you were made to seem uncool, out of touch and greedy (Metallica).

It's ironic that so many artists speak out against it now, including guys who use to say "It's okay, cause our fans will always buy the actual CD" (Korn).

It may help some bands gather a few new fans... but, there is definately an underground scene where people are actually downloading, burning and selling CDs and DVD movies illegally. People are buying them up too, like crazy. That's not helping anybody but the guy selling the pirated copies.

We all like to think that the next guy will do the right thing because WE (you and me) will do the right thing.... but, there are soooo many people who just want free shit, and are willing to do whatever it is to get it, without a 2nd thought.

Over a billion I-PODs and MP3 players have been sold. If that's the only way you listen to music, what incentive do you have to go out and buy a CD when you've already downloaded the CD for free and imported it into your player.

I agree with what others have been saying, Black Rain didn't sell well because it isn't that great of an album.

He's been putting the same album out over and over for many years now, it started with 'No Rest for the Wicked'. That same old commercial Ozzy sound is soooo tired, I'm surprised it took everyone else so long to realize that.

I suppose if your music is geared towards the "rural underpriviledged" market, like Ozzy's seems to be, you will be hurt by downloading. Fortunately most metal fans are intelligent and respectful and earn a living, and therefore would buy something they like. In other words, I'd guess a band like Exodus or Nightwish (if they were just as big) would have less of a problem.

I bought Black Rain thinking it would be a lot heavier than the last record which I didn't bother getting. Now I wished that I had just downloaded what I had likied off of the internet instead - far too many ballads fro my liking. Maybe what bands should do now is sell new material as individual songs via there own websites and make money that way charging people a small price or doing the Radiohead thing and getting fans to pay what they think the song is worth rather than have a fixed price.
.... Personally, I want a heavier less commercial sounding record from Ozzy. Black Rain was promising a lot but hasn't really lived up to peoples expectatons. Getting your band members to write ore songs would help rather than have the producer write your songs with you like on Black Rain.

.."They'll probably buy the actual CD for quality sound and artwork. And they'll buy merchandise like T-Shirts and whatever if it's quality and worth it. People that truly love music will buy music. Period."

So true. For so many bands that I had access through p2p, I have purchased a lot of merchandise later on, including albums. Try before you buy.. I go to a lot of shows and end up buying a t-shirt as respect for the band. I have a whole collection of tour shirts. And a big part of that is due to P2P file sharing. I wouldn't have a chance to hear the music without it.
Ozzy is a multimillionaire. Just like Lars. And relating to both, they suck as musicians. A lot of true musicians like to play because they enjoy it.. These guys are washed up losers who have to turn to reality t.v. and documentaries because they have to pay off there expenses in some sort of sad desperation. Just like Bret Michaels, Gene Simmons, Ted Nugent...ect...

Are you really that moronic to think that illegal downloading hasn't hurt bands???????

If your local Mall left its doors open and no one was around ever people would clean it out in no time. Now many of us won't do that but others would. That in a nutshell is what illegal downloading is. You can't just ignore it because your to stupid to figure out that many other people do.

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUALITY OF THE ALBUM!!

If you can get something for nothing people will take advantage of it. For an artist like Ozzy it won't surprise if illegal downloading has cost him in the neighborhood of 500,000+ in sales. If you've ever used any simple Pier to Pier file sharing program and actually shared music you know there is millions out there doing it every minute of the day.

Ok, first off it is "peer to peer" software ... not "pier to pier" (which sounds like old school piracy to me LOL)

Wise up... music is not going anywhere. How is it marketed and sold will definitely change, but that is a good thing. Do you really want some label overcharging fans and exploiting their love for a band just to make money? The sad thing is that artists (for the most part) get screwed even worse than the fans - it is high time for a change!!

I don't personally agree with downloading to avoid paying... that is stealing as far as I am concerned... but downloading to evaluate is something else. I buy the music I listen to and like. I *want* to buy what I like! Nobody has to twist my arm to make a sale - they just have to deliver something worth buying! Forgive me if I don't just take anyone's word for it though... too much style without substance out there! :-)

Howabout the fact that Ozzy and others have this terrible habit lately of punishing the buyers of the album on release day by adding more tracks and shit 6 months later ??? That's fucked up.

And howabout his wife and his father-in-law and their kind sucking the blood out of artists like vampires ??? That's fucked up.

And I have to come back to the Jake E. Lee thing....

That era of metal was the worst ever and Ozzy looked like a total idiot. Jake sounded like something out of Spinal Tap. He took a style that was revolutionary and pretty much killed it by stripping out it's soul. The lyrics, the videos, the album art, the clothes, and the production was SHITE. man, wasn't that the Ron Nevison era ?? Someone should plant that fucker right beside Bruce Fairbairn in the Graveyard of Shame. Yuck. That's fucked up.
