OZZY OSBOURNE Says Sting Operation In Fargo, North Dakota 'Tarnished' His Reputation
- Nov. 1, 2007
|
|
|
Since when does the lure of an OZZY OSBOURNE concert become the impetus for a sting operation by one local sheriff?
That's what an outraged Osbourne would like to know after the events that transpired Monday, October 29 before his show at the Fargodome in Fargo, ND.
As masterminded by Paul D. Laney, a local county sheriff — under the name of PDL Productions — this is how the sting was set up, all without Osbourne's knowledge:
Sheriff Laney took the liberty of planning an Ozzy Osbourne pre-show concert party by offering the very same perks included in Ozzy's "official" VIP tour packages including two tickets to 40 unsuspecting citizens who received the PDL invites by mail.
When the "winners" showed up at the bash, they were promptly handcuffed and arrested on various outstanding warrants. Sheriff Laney quickly held a televised press conference to congratulate himself on the successful sting operation.
"Instead of holding a press conference to pat himself on the back," says Osbourne, "Sheriff Laney should be apologizing to me for using my name in connection with these arrests. It's insulting to me and to my audience and it shows how lazy this particular sheriff is when it comes to doing his job."
Adds Ozzy, "Sheriff Laney went out of his way to tarnish my reputation by implying that I somehow attract a criminal element, which is certainly not true. My audiences are good hard-working people who have been hugely supportive of my music for nearly four decades. They have also been very supportive of my wife Sharon's colon cancer charity by raising over a million dollars (partly through VIP ticket sales) at my shows. It's obvious to me that this sheriff has an agenda and is just trying to make a name for himself on my back."
Despite his comments about Sheriff Laney's sting operation, Ozzy harbors no ill will to the people of Fargo and hopes to return there under more favorable circumstances.

Maybe Ozzy should have been informed ahead of time at least, but a lot of scumbags got what was coming to them. I don't think anything is wrong with that.

He hasn't tarnished your reptation Ozzy. No one is going to get up, read a story about this sting in the paper, and say "Hey! I thought that Ozzy was as wholesome as Kenny G! But now I'll have to rethink my opinion of him..." Just because you don't like what you perceive to be the implications of him using you (as opposed to, say, Kenny G), that doesn't mean it's actually gonna tarnish your rep.

Despite the fact that they were criminals, I can understand why Ozzy is a little annoyed that his name was used to do it.

This coming from a guy who bit off the head of a dove and sniffed up a line of ants. Ozzy face it, your reputation has always been tarnished! I remember back in 1983 when Ozzy was coming to TX a local Sheriff held up a rifle on Tlocal V with a group of concerned parents and said we are gonna give Ozzy Osbourne a warm Texas welcome. Ozzy's fans have always been on the wild side.

Well, I have to say that he's right as rain (black) about this.
Fuck cops. And I've never been arrested...never even had a speeding ticket, but the vast majority of cops are washed out ex-picked on kids from school with a candy coated badge on their chests, ready to bust heads on any longhair they can get their clubs on.
Not all of them, but most.
I'd be pissed too if some dingbat, four-pronged sheriff used my name for a cheap self praise.
Then again...at least there are a few less losers out tonight.
Well done Sheriff Laney! Now please retire.

They do the same thing with sporting events all the time. If they have good lawyers they get out of it from entrapment laws. If they get a public pretender, they are fucked.
Ozzy has great grounds for litigation, since they used his name and image without permission.
40 warrants for 10-20,000 people is probably under the average anyways. Im sure a gathering that big for anything could nab that many people.

Those words were intelligible. Which leads me to believe, Ozzy never said any of that. What he probably said was more along the lines of: "F*@%ing cops, maaaaan. Sharon! Bleeglesnout sha blah." ...or something

Who has done more to tarnish his rep more than himself and his wife? i'd say he isn't such a bad guy as people think, but his name isn't synonymous with good by the general public and he knows it!
in other related news... they never mentioned that they had to give away a virtual shit load of tickets to get people to show up. I mean a TON of tickets given away by local radio. so my guess is that ozzy won't be back to fargo as he states at the end...

Personally I thought the reality TV show he did wasn't exactly exempt from doing some damage to his reputation but regardless this was underhanded and cheap.
Even if Fargo's not exactly the most visible location on the map why did the sheriff assume that initiating a sting operation using the name of someone as legendary as Ozzy Osbourne wouldn't go unnoticed by Ozzy himself?

is subjective... there are plenty of people in the world that either don't know who the hell ozzy is or could give a shit less.
i'm sure if he had checked with ozzy it might have worked out. I agree show a little respect whether you think ozzy is a legend or not.

granted, those people needed to be dealt with, but at the same time the Sheriff could have just easily WORKED, and picked them up one by one....
they did use Ozzy's name to do this without his consent......utilizing the same perks of the VIP package...

Idiot...entrapment is if they were put into a situation in which they committed the crime, not if they were put into a situation where they were caught for doing a previous crime.
