DECAPITATED Drummer Dead At 23

Drummer Witold "Vitek" Kieltyka of the Polish extreme metal band DECAPITATED passed away in a Russian hospital from injuries sustained in a recent road collision. He was 23 years old. Vitek and DECAPITATED singer Covan (real name: Adrian Kowanek) were hurt in an accident earlier in the week involving DECAPITATED's tour bus and a truck carrying wood in Gomel, on the Russia/Belarus border. Both musicians reportedly sustained serious head injuries in the collision, which is believed to have been the fault of the band's driver (although this has not yet been officially confirmed). According to the Polish Internet portal Onet.pl, Vitek underwent trepanation, a form of surgery in which a hole is drilled or scraped into the skull, and was due to be transported to a hospital in Krakow, Poland for further treatment. Covan's family released a statement yesterday (Thursday, November 1) that the vocalist's condition had improved. At the time, the vocalist was still said to be at a hospital in Novozybkov, Russia, where he and Vitek were taken following the accident. Vitek was an amazing drummer and a hell of a nice guy. I met him outside a concert venue in Worcester when they were touring with Cephalic Carnage and Necrophagist. He bummed a cigarette off of me and we talked about music and Poland. Such a fucking nice guy and an amazing talent. My heart goes out to his family friends and band members. May Covan have a speedy recovery and the band returns to what they do best. Making kick-ass death metal music.

Besides that, I really mourn this ... I got a knot in my throath right now, Decapitated is one of my - all times - favorite death metal bands ever and Vitek drumming was a great asset to the band. A very sad day.

This is terrible, Vitek was one of my all time idol drummers, definitely one of the best drummer sof our time. Decapitated is one of my all time favorite death metal bands. Wow...I wish there was something else I could say, this loss is tremendous, my thoughts and prayers go out to the band and his family.

Vitek was one of my favorite drummers of all time. His machine-gun blasts and time signatures were truly unique in the world of death metal. I remember being absolutely blown away when I first heard "Three-Dimensional Defect."
He will be sorely missed.

I remeber working their tour with Hyppocricy and Nile last year.
Vitek and Corvan were cool as hell to hang out with, me and Vitek would talk alot while drinking after shows. he would tell me about how he misses his wife in Poland, and explained why in poland they wear their ring finger on the right hand.Very talented drummer, seeing them live so many times in a row.

ive never really heard a decapitated song as far as i know, ive kept meaning to check them out but keep forgetting

Got the opportunity to see these guys this past summer on the Summer Slaughter Tour. I wish I had paid more attention to them, I was kinda in the back checking out merch, walking around like an idiot instead of focusing on the band. I had hoped to see them again this month with Amon Amarth. How awful.

I got to see these guys with Hypocrisy and Nile on their tour, and I was blown away bu them all. It's a shame that such a bright future for this man was snuffed out like this. I hope the band and families can find the strength and courage to carry on with their lives after such a tragedy.

It absolutely breaks my heart to read this news today. Vitek had so much vitality and life in him. He was an incredible musician and even more an incredible human being.
I will share a short story with you all on how great this guy was.
Earlier this year my brother was blown up in Afghanistan, just before I started touring on the Summer Slaughter tour. When Summer Slaughter made its tour stop at Jaxx in West Springfield, VA, I took some time away from my duties that day to go spend some time with my brother in Walter Reed Hospital in D.C. I returned back to the tour after about 6 hours of visiting my brother. When I got back, I was pretty upset at what I had seen at the hospital and the extent of my brothers injuries. I remember Vitek coming up to me and asking me how my brother was and how I was doing. We spent some time talking about how much it sucks that young men between the ages of 18-25 years old were loosing their lives in the war and the injuries they sustain and the pain it causes their friends and families. Vitek was an amazingly wonderful person for being so comforting when I was obviously hurting. Throughout the rest of Summer Slaughter he would always ask me how my brother was doing. As a person he showed genuine concern and compassion for others, as a musician he displayed superior skill and passion for his music. I will miss him for his kindness. I will miss him for his talent. The world of Metal is an emptier place without Witold 'Vitek' Kieltyka.
My heartfelt sympathies & condolences go out to Vitek's family and friends. To Covan I send my best thoughts of healing and recovery. To all effected by this tragedy, I mourn with you too.
Rest In Peace Witold 'Vitek' Kieltyka, and thank you for all the great times, you will be missed.

This is horrible. I can only imagine the Headline "Metallica Bassist dead". That must have been similar to this event. I was obviously too young back then. Just the fact that it was a tour bus crash makes me compare the two. I am honored for having seen him perform over the summer.

I still remember when I listened to "Winds Of Creation" when it was released I was like "wow this can't be a 15 years old guy, this is a machine!!!" He had an amazing talent. this is really sad --- decapitated was one of the first death metal bands i really loved
vitek was an amazing drummer, and i can only imagine that at my age he had ALREADY recorded winds of creation and nihility, so talented
i hope covan recovers, hes awesome - i had one of my best metal moments when he yelled the chorus to 3d defect right at me at the slaughter fest
its just horrible that the nice guy i saw on peabodys second floor preparing to kick some metal ass has passed away

What shitty news. I just recently got into this band and was so psyched to be seeing them in December with Amon Amarth. I noticed one poster mention "What a waste of a talented life" which i know he meant nothing negative by it but none the less i just read 135 comments from fans who were someway influenced in their life by this amazing drummer. Not to mention the amazing studio recordings he has left behind which will only thrive in the coming years. Definitely not a waste of life. Especially at 23. None the less too young to go and a complete tragedy. We can now just hope Covan can hang in there. R.I.P. Vitek. I just read in one of Polish online news stations (TVP3), that Adrian Kowanek (the vocalist) is still in a coma, and that the insurance company, Commercial Union, is delaying his access to proper care in a better equipped hospital in Poland that is crucial for his recovery. That was based on an interview with his mother. This is the email for Commercial Union in Poland, I will send them an email, hopefully I will not be the only one, and that under more pressure they will take the right course of action (bok@cu.com.pl)

I was lucky to see Decapitated this summer at Summer Slaughter and they were amazing. I was planning on seeing them again on the Amon Amarth tour in 4 weeks but that won't be happening. I just hope the tour goes well and they will dedicate this tour to him.

No way, I can't believe this, I was seriously just telling my co-worker who's a metal drummer about this and discussed how amazing this guy was. I'm in shock honestly, Decapitated is my favorite death metal band and Organic Hallucinosis is a modern masterpiece. I really hope the band carries on but I could understand how hard it would be without such an integral founding member.

The news hit me really hard this evening. Vitek was easily one of the best young drummers in Metal and FAR TOO YOUNG to go. Rest in peace my brother. You will be missed. Now go start a band with Chuck Schuldiner and Roger Patterson.

I had a chance to meet vitek 2 years ago when they played in canada. he was really nice, he hung out with me and my buddy jeff for a bit, signed my cd's and talked about music, great drummer, super sad :(

We are all sad about this tragedy. I know Vitek because Neuraxis toured with Decapitated in Canada 2 years ago. DECAPITATED was supposed to come to Montreal on december with Amon Amarth, I guess I won't see the boys. I feel bad for the band and especially Vasek aka Vogg the guitar player. Hope Adrian will be fine too...

I cant believe this. I saw Decapitated live in Sydney earlier this year and they ripped my fucking balls off in one hell of a show!
I got drunk watching one of my fave bands that night, now I'll get drunk for the man machine drummer Vitek.
To the family and friends of Vitek, while I had never met him, he left his mark on my life and this saddens me to tears.

I've been listening to Decapitated since 2001, and I am truly heartbroken by hearing the news of Vitek's passing. He was way to fucking young to go and one hell of a drummer, especially for his age.
