SLASH: AXL Quit GUNS N' ROSES To Gain Control Of Band
- Nov. 9, 2007
|
|
antiMUSIC reports: One of the big revelations in Slash's new autobiography is how the original GUNS N' ROSES split up and Axl Rose gained control of the group and name. Slash also delivers bad news for those that have been hoping that the original line-up would somehow regroup, it's not going to happen. Slash writes of the possibility of a reunion: "It's funny, when fans ask me, as they do almost every day, whether GUNS, in its original form, will ever reunite, it is hard to take them seriously. That question is so asinine to me; if they knew the real story, they'd already know the answer. But my response is always the same: 'Take a look at what everyone is doing now. Duff and Matt and I are part of a really successful band. Izzy's content doing his thing; Steven too. And Axl is touring with the 'new GUNS.' No one is making phone calls to see when we can get the band together again.'" Just how did that "new GUNS" come about? It started when Axl and the band's manager had the other members of the band sign a contract that gave Axl control of the group name if they ever broke up. And that's exactly what Axl did, he broke the group up. Slash writes that the break up was caused by " Axl wanting control to the point that the rest of us were strangled." Then on August 31, 1995 Axl dropped a bomb on Duff and Slash, the only remaining members at the time, when sent them a letter "saying he was leaving the band and taking the name with him under the terms of the contract." Of course, Slash and Duff were invited to still be part of Axl's band, but you'll have to read to book to learn more about how that worked out.

Seriously, if he did this, it shows everything about him.
Granted they were foolish to do sign though.
Axl doesn't even have the balls to tour as The Axl Rose Band, because that is what it is, he is a coward.

AXL might be a dick now, but he truly was the driving force behind the GNR sound. he was not just a singer. his musical direction and ambition was the reason why there was so much tension in the band which eventually led to the collapse..

...to let themselves get rolled like this.
It's too band they didn't just break up then and let the name die, instead of letting Axl kill the legacy.
I'd be curious to know what form of legal consideration Axl allegedly gave the other members to make this "contract" legally binding--or how his actions could be see as in good faith from a legal standpoint. It sounds like their lawyers were as high as they were to let this extortion/fraud succeed.
Slash was the main force behind the band. They would have been nothing without his guitar playing. His two solo albums were better than anything by GnR except for AfD, and he kicked them out in no time once he was free from Axl's insanity.

News flash if Duff and Slash were the driving force then VR would be a hell of alot better then they are.
Axl and Izzy did a lot of the writting
Is Axl an odd, odd man, yes he is but he also is far more reliable and happy then he ever was in the glory days of GnR.
Compare the New GnR to VR and see who has better ticket sales. I saw both bands and the new GNR killed VR off the stage, Can't even compare them.

The only thing their lameness proves is that Scott Weiland can destroy the potential of any band. But even with a talentless transvestite junkie for a singer, they at least manage to put out an album every few years.

Well, you're right about VR, but how the fuck can you even think about using the words "Axl" and "reliable" in the same sentance...that is unless the sentance is "the opposite of reliable is Axl"?
FYI, I've seen both VR and the New GnR, and they both sucked complete ass. Waste of my time and money.

i say fuck Rose 'N Roses. Axl's worse than a one-hit-wonder. He had Izzy's songwriting and style, an incredible Keef/Joe Perry-level #2 man in Slash, and that rhythm section... awesome. he was an incredible frontman (have you heard a more assured, nuanced, and powerful performance on a debut record?).
the real GNR had all the tools, and Axl ensured those tools would be wasted.
cuz he chickened out. he was their leader -- as all good teams require -- but it must've crept up on him that others in the band might surpass him (like EVH). Axl peaked too early, turned into Elton John, didn't progress/improve as a musician (quite the opposite), flexed his muscle (demanding Steven's ouster), forced his competition out (i think it says A LOT that Izzy left so soon), hired some friends to pollute the band, and the listening public is left with true Axl Rose material, of two varieties: shitty (UYIs, Spaghetti) and non-existant. they shoulda been like the Stones and Aerosmith and Humble Pie.
but at least i see tons of 'society page' photos of him wearing nice suits. yeah, you're a fucking outlaw, axl.

How can people believe that GNR helped usher out the big hair bands. Appetite for destruction came out in 1987.
The same year the produced anthrax's among the living; testament's the legacy and I could go on ...
what helped usher out the LA hair scene was bay area thrash
not dirty LA rock

not knocking anthrax or testament, but when 1987 gets brought AFD is the album that gets the most focus.
20 years on it's regularly picked as a groundbreaking album by a wide variety of critics

If i remember correctly. Back in the 90's before they all left. Axl went up to Slash , Izzy , Duff etc. and told them all to sign over the name Guns N Roses to him. Which they all did and quit the band The full story was on the VH -1 behind the music on GNR a few years ago.

Axl was the driving force because he wrote all the songs, check the credits. And without Axl they would have just sounded like an Aerosmith tribute band...and we all know the story about how Slash didn't even know what he had when he stumbled upon the riff to Sweet Child O' Mine until Axl told him and than wrote the song...AND Velvet Revolver is boring and is what G n' R would have been without Axl...Yes, Axl is a dick, but that is because he has ever right to be because it was always his band and he is the one that put the most time into it and cared the most...they just wanted to rock but Axl wanted to write great songs and in the end they did both...so there you go

and G n' R was the first major death blow to hair metal.... because it was true rock n' roll that sold a shit load of records and that is what ALWAYS changes things...don't be so delusional...yeah I love Anthrax and all those bands but come on Appetite is a monster that showed the world how a rock band should be and everyone knows that and it also happened to be huge and above all that the record is just fucking classic no matter what! the fact that it sold shows the human race can sometimes make the right choice and sense sincerity in a rock band and spend money on it thus flushing out all the insincere cock rock turds...and chicks dug it too

First of all, the positive and negative gets blown way out of proportion by the media. But, I've read/watched countless different interviews, etc. on each of the original five, and here's what I've gathered on whose on who would do a gig with who:
Axl Rose: Izzy Stradlin.
Basically, Axl won't play with any of the other members...not even if they admit he was right about everything over the years, simply because an original GN'R reunion would ruin his version. I believe right from the beginning, Axl wanted his version of the band...he systematically broke down the original, then U.Y.I. versions. This is what Axl wanted. His band, his identity. An original show would put the media into a storm until more gigs were played. He may have patched up things with Izzy and Steven, and would probably be willing to with Duff and Slash, but he'd never do a gig with 'em all. Never.
Slash: Duff, Steven, Izzy
Slash lived for Guns N' Roses...it's part of him, and always will be. I credit him for having been able to rebuild himself after leaving the band. And you know what, he's played with Duff, Steven, and Izzy since leaving GN'R. Notice in all the interviews or times he's addressed the GN'R reunion issue, he's never straight out said "It won't happen. Period." If he really didn't want a reunion, he'd have come out and said that. This guy would do a gig if he could fix things with Rose. But he's just not willing to roll over and come crawling up to Axl, saying he was right about everything over the years. Not gonna happen.
Izzy Stradlin: Axl, Slash, Duff, Steven
Izzy is my personal favorite of the five. He may have walked out on Guns N' Roses in '91, but that's because he had issues with the bad stuff! Drugs, riots, huge crowds, excessiveness...too much fame! This guy may not be the best of the best, but he's a real rock n' roller, and just likes getting up there and rockin' a crowd. He sobered up, and just kept going with his musical career, never sniping at the others...just doing his thing. He goes with the groove. He even came back for a bit in 93 when they needed him. And since leaving the band, he's played with Velvet Revolver and the new Guns N' Roses, and Steven Adler to boot. Izzy would do a reunion gig, he's just not trying to make it happen because he doesn't want to throw himself into the fray of "Slash vs Axl", and end up making it worse. Those two have to work it out on their own.
Duff McKagan: Slash, Izzy, Steven, Axl
Duff has done a great job at not taking a specific side on the issue, while staying in a band with Slash. He maintains to this day that he considers Axl a friend, and even said in a Nov. 23 interview that he was talking with Slash about a possible reunion (although neither were too optimistic). Duff is kind of like Izzy, and hey! He stuck with Guns for a while even after all the others (save Axl) had gone. He stuck with it till it was un-stick-to-able. He's fine with Velvet Revolver, but if the opportunity arose, he's quoted as saying "As long as it was for fun, and just say ten shows to huge crowds".
Steven Adler: Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff
Steven has nothing else going for him...he's been living in relative obscurity for many, many years now. Fact is, this guy would do the gig in a heartbeat, and is the only one actively lobbying for it, but he's gotta clean up his own crap...and prove he can drum. When he's on, no one can play Appetite like him. As good as Matt Sorum is, Appetite For Destruction is a Steven Adler product, with his unique sound that Sorum can only do his imitation of. If it's the classics like Welcome to the Jungle and Paradise City you want to hear, Adler is the guy for it...so long as he isn't wasted. Since being fired, he's played with all the guys except Axl, but has cleared some stuff up with him.
So, all-in-all, I'd say the order of willingness proceeds as follows:
1) Steven Adler 2) Izzy Stradlin 3) Duff McKagan 4) Slash 5) Axl Rose
At the end of the day, I don't see these guys ever doing the work to make a reunion happen. The only realistic opportunity will be if they (Appetite Era) get inducted into the rock n' roll hall of fame (earliest that's possible is 2012). Even then..................................iffy at best.

...Axl was the primary songwriter and Izzy was the secondary songwriter. They both contributed quite a bit more than Slash and Duff, who were the other two songwriters during the classic era of GNR. Without Axl Rose, Guns 'n' Roses would never have been what they were, and Izzy left of his own accord anyway...which made the gap between Axl's importance and that of Slash and Duff even wider. If they couldn't see eye-to-eye, then Axl was always the man that deserved to carry on with the band, especially seeing as with Izzy gone, he was the only original member left (Slash had replaced Tracii Guns, and Duff had replaced Ole Beich).

...if Axl loses this lineup to member change and the change of members happens so fast that the band cannot work productively anymore in its current state. At that point, I would think the idea of the five GNR members gathering together and playing as a whole again would be a quite logical way for Axl to go. I think Izzy, Steven, and Duff would be all up for it. Slash may need to be talked into it if this was the case.
So basically, I think that a GNR reunion will not happen unless Axl gets really desperate...and seeing as I like the current lineup as much as I liked the old ones (I think the music is excellent), I don't think Axl will be that desperate for a while, if ever.
