CELINE DION Is A Heavy Metal Fan - Nov. 11, 2007
Powerhouse pop singer Celine Dion, who has made her name and her fortune with sweet ballads about love, has revealed to Australia's The Sunday Telegraph that she is a closet heavy metal fan.

So much so that her warm-up song while doing sound checks is almost invariably the AC/DC belt-it-out classic "Thunderstruck".

"I like hard rock and, if I'm doing stadiums, I want the engineers to crank the sound system up high with rock and roll, heavy metal music— it helps me to get the adrenalin rushing," she said.

"I've been a big fan of AC/DC for about 15 years or 20 years — the sound guys introduced me to them (their music)."

Dion previously covered the AC/DC classic "You Shook Me All Night Long" as a duet with Anastacia on the VH1 CD/DVD release "Divas Las Vegas 2002", out via Sony Music. Watch video footage of the performance below.

Are fine being called metal. They laid a lot of the groundwork for some of the biggest names to take on the guise of the word metal. They are one of the most influential bands of all time and Between them, Metallica, Led Zep, and Sabbath, thats pretty much everything you'd ever need to know about metal. So yes, AC/DC can indeed be called metal as it is only an extension of Rock and Roll.

Celine Dion would outshine every female metal/rock vocalist if she wanted...Celine has a great, wide and beautiful voice, truly a singer with a professional style and technique.

She could easily do a heavy rock/metal album if she wanted; all they have to do is to get some professional players around her and that's it!

The first album could well be "Celine Dion - In Rock" or something like that...

Think about her soaring with her voice and presence on some powerful heavy rock song...with long black boots, short skirt, tight top, dark cat-like make-up...phew!!!

AC/DC are NOT heavy metal, no matter what the hell the media called them 30 years ago! Led Zep, AC/DC, Van Halen... never metal at all. It's all hard rock, and people who can't distinguish hard rock from heavy metal are fucking stupid. It's like night and day. Just because night in day happen in the same twenty four hour span doesn't make them the same. The media doesn't what the hell metal is, and Celine (and the ignorant posters in this thread so far) don't know the difference between heavy metal and hard rock as evidenced by their words. Heavy metal as a term has been around a lot longer than heavy metal the genre.

All those bands people refers to were proto-metal but still have their place in Metal's history. Celine Dion might not have a broad knowledge of the genre but at least she's not hiding it under the carpet like so many others.

Pop artists are so afraid of what people will think of them if they reveal something as 'unusual' as 'I like AC/DC'. Damn, JimaCarey likes Cannibal Corpse..how cool is that?

I've often wondered if the issue isn't somewhat generational. A lot of people growing up in the 70's (my father's generation) seem to put thing in the metal category that I would put in the hard rock, and even rock, categories. To me, AC/DC is hard rock, and groups like Zep and Van Halen just rock (Not that Zeppelin and Deep Purple and so forth don't have a place in the history of the metal genre, of course). I read a book one time that was supposed to be a history of heavy metal--not rock, not hard rock, but metal. 85% or more of the book was spent on AC/DC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, etc. Van Halen got like 40 pages, and Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer got like 20 pages COMBINED. It sort of reminds me of the scene at the end of the Spinal Tap movie, where two band members are congratulating themselves for playing rock and not that new-fangled "headbanging bullshit".

So what if Celine likes AC/DC or not? So what if it's not really "metal"?

Who knows, maybe she would've made for a decent rock or metal singer. But considering time she got into the industry, there weren't many females in rock or metal, so she might not have been given a chance if she took that route. I don't care for her music (although I did sorta like one of her earliest English speaking songs when it came out), but will admit she's a damn good singer.

Michael Bolton started off as a metal singer (Blackjack) and has distanced himself far away from his roots. I'll bet he never bothers to mention his past. Ron Keel turned his back on metal for years, then heard the feedback and returned.

Since we're on the topic of heavy before heavy metal, there's some early Aerosmith that's quite heavy. The Beatles had a few songs one might consider heavy, and Iron Butterfly's 'In-A Gadda-Da-Vida' comes to mind as well.

A song does not have to be loud and fast to be heavy. There's more to it that that, stuff that can't always be put down in words.

Besides, who knows what'll be considered metal in 10 to 20 years or how metal today's going to be seen?

"I bet she only listens to the most raw and primitive black metal."

Ha.

She sings from her throat.. So what if she can hold out a note. a LOT of female rock/metal vocalists have definition in their voice, which counts. She sings soft rock, and AC/DC is the most over-rated band to this date.

Metal's beginnings... based on blues.

Sabbath and Zeppelin being two of the highest profile bands to enhance blues music with distorted guitars and lyrics laced with occult references. The combination of this with the addition of the speed of punk is what gave us the Metal music that we know and love today.

While AC/DC, or Zeppelin, would not be considered Metal by today's standards, they were heavy influences on the beginning of the genre.

I guess AC/DC is closer to Hard Rock than METAL.

You ever notice that music stores have a funny way of separating their Pop/Rock & METAL sections?

I was at an FYE not too long ago picking up the new Type O Negative. System of a Down was under Pop/Rock. I would consider that METAL.

By The Way, AC/DC was under Pop/Rock.

Next, are you going to say: "Iron Butterfly isn't metal"?!? Do either of you even know where the term "metal" and "heavy metal" came from. Hint: LED Zeppelin...IRON Butterfly. These bands didn't "influence" modern metal, they created it, pioneered it and branded it. It's like saying "Dad might have called Coltrane jazz, but for me, it's nothing like Kenny G".
