Management: METALLICA Will Not Play Next Year's BONNAROO Festival - Dec. 3, 2007
According to HardDrive Radio, a source at Q Prime Management — which represents METALLICA — "flat-out denied" a report that surfaced over the weekend that METALLICA will headline the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee next June. The information, which was based on an an email published in industry commentator Bob Lefsetz's newsletter, also stated that LED ZEPPELIN would play its first U.S. show since July 24, 1977 at the event.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told Examiner.com in an October 2007 interview that the band's upcoming album will be "heavier" yet more "melodic" than 2003's controversial "St. Anger". Ulrich explained, "Whereas 'St. Anger' was an exercise in over-pummeling the listener, these new songs echo some of our stuff from the '80s — long, epic journeys through different musical landscapes, heavier, but a lot more melodic." When asked whether the new songs will be shorter, in the four-to-five minute range, Ulrich said, "Well, the most of the intros are four to five minutes. I don't know — METALLICA and short songs just don't go that well together."

Although none of the songs have official titles yet, Ulrich revealed that some of the "silly" working titles included "19", "10", "German Soup", "Glass Cow" and "Black Squirrel". Ulrich said the names "relate to where the idea came from, like Glasgow, Scotland became 'Glass Cow'. And when we don't have anything clever to call it, we just call it a number."

The new METALLICA album is tentatively due in the spring.

Thank God! I'm a Bonnaroo veteran, and I think they would be very out of place at this fest. Call me a hippy all you want, but i grew up listening to metal, Bonnaroo opens the mind as far as talented musicans go! I think i'm the only guy to wear an Exodus shirt at Bonnaroo, and I got alot of "hell yeah's" for wearing it! Actually, fuck it, I think it'd be awesome to have Metallica at the Roo! Although, it'd bring more than peaceful people!

...which means they ARE playing Bonnaroo.

As for Metallica being out of place, look at Tool, Clutch and the Police. They're not your typical "Dead" band and all have great preformances. I hope they play. I'm already making my arraingments.

i can believe the new CD is probably shitty. when you aren't hungry for it, what's the point of writing good material? maybe they can't anymore?

That's why I didn't like St. Anger: It over-pummeled me.

As much as I love them, going back to their roots would mean to write another Seek & Destroy but I don't know if they can go back to that.

God no, Perry Farell has nothing to do with Bonnaroo! His band has never payed and he has never booked bands for it. It is actually a great fest if you're open minded!

Bonnaroo is a lot of fun if you're into that type of music.

"heavier, but a lot more melodic"

Metallica only pulled that off once in their career: in 1984 they put out a heavier yet more melodic album than they had in 1983. Now, granted, St. Anger was neither heavy nor melodic, so it's possible... but after 23 years of failed attempts I'm not gonna hold my breath.

For one that is a pretty basic song, a good one, yet they sure could write a song like it easily if they wanted to.......

Kill Em All made waves not because of the song writing talent on the record.........but because of the timing.....and because they were molding a form of music that had all kinds of ROOM TO GROW........

countless metal albums come out today that for all practical purposes are better than kill em all........

but they do not get promoted, they do not have the same impact because it has been done before......

Metallica has made some of the most legendary records of all time and more people know their whole catalogue from start to finish then most bands in history can claim.......

I for one would rather have them do their best to make art instead of a product, and it's a good thing that they have changed.......Their music, even st anger, was above and beyond the other "popular" "good selling" music that has came out in recent times........

COMMENT | I also think......

if you are bashing/feeling betrayed metallica and are still holding out hope for them you are stupid.......

BECAUSE.....

you are holding onto a past glory that is impossible to recreate.......

Cliff is still dead last time a checked.....

so now you people are discrediting Master and Justice? "Metallica only pulled that off once in their career: in 1984 they put out a heavier yet more melodic album than they had in 1983."
Every time I look at comments, the years keep getting more and more pushed back. Pretty soon you people are going to say "Metallica has never put out a good album. Hetfield should have stayed with Leather Charm." or some BS like that. I'm a 'Tallica fan through and through, and I will defend them because they made some of the greatest thrash albums ever. Can they recapture their youth and release another Puppets-type album? Probably not, but that's because no one can recapture their glory days. They still are a major reason, though, that thrash is where it is.

They wouldn't fit, plain and simple. I would love to see them while they still have the good sense to play the classics live but having been there, I am pretty sure it wouldn't be a good fit. I was interested to see how Tool worked there and it was awesome but Tool has that zoned out, reflective quality to the music and Clutch is just good old bluesy hard rock at this point so they both managed to fit in even though Bonnaroo isn't a straight jam festival anymore. But I don't see this working and I could see it turning a lot of the festival's loyal fan base off. I think it would be cool, but it wouldn't work.

Now Zeppelin on the other hand...I can only hope.
