METALLICA Frontman On Upcoming Album: 'We Don't Want Pretty Good, We Want Excellent'
- Dec. 7, 2007
|
|
|
In the latest issue of the METALLICA Club (the group's official fan club) members-only magazine "So What!" METALLICA's James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich offer more insight into the songwriting process for the group's forthcoming album. "We don't want pretty good, we want excellent and [producer] Rick Rubin is getting us to try and achieve that," Hetfield is quoted as saying. "He's [Rick] very good at getting the essence of an artist out and bringing that back to the top again. It's the 'Master of Puppets' mentality again. You need to prove the world that you're good, you need to be hungry again — you need to [put on] a showcase that says, 'Here we are, just like the first time we did it.'"
Added Hammett: "It's about doing the best that you possibly can. I have difficulty wading through all the ideas because I'm biased — I think everything we do has a lot of merit to it. In that regard Rick Rubin is great because he will just say, 'Such and such a part is not good, so come up with something else.' He just leaves the problem up to us and we just solve it between ourselves without too much interference from his side, which is completely different from [longtime METALLICA producer] Bob Rock whose musical thinking would permeate the record. Rick Rubin leaves a lot of the musical problem solving to ourselves, which keeps it more pure."
Lars commented: "A lot of the work we did after the band nearly broke up [during the making of 2003's 'St. Anger'] was not going to be so evident on the record we made at the time, but more evident on the next record, which is the one weré making now. This has been a much more enjoyable experience, much more fun, creatively stimulating and working with Rick is helping a lot."
Ulrich told Examiner.com in October that the band's upcoming album will be "heavier" yet more "melodic" than "St. Anger". Ulrich explained, "Whereas 'St. Anger' was an exercise in over-pummeling the listener, these new songs echo some of our stuff from the '80s — long, epic journeys through different musical landscapes, heavier, but a lot more melodic." When asked whether the new songs will be shorter, in the four-to-five minute range, Ulrich said, "Well, the most of the intros are four to five minutes. I don't know — METALLICA and short songs just don't go that well together."
The new METALLICA album is tentatively due in the spring.

Hopefully Rick Rubin is bringing these guys back up to par...I've always been a Metallica fan, didn't care too much for St. Anger, but I still have it. This new one sounds like it's gonna redeem them, let's hope it's true.

I'll believe it when I hear it. Everyone said St. Anger was supposed to be the return to form and it was ass.
I'd love to be proven wrong. Nothing would delight me more to love Metallica again.
But until I hear it, I've lost faith.

Can't wait for the new album. Every news piece I've heard is leading me to believe this will truly be a very good Metallica album. I'm sure it won't be Master Of Puppets caliber, but it very well could be their best album since TBA. We'll see.

I love all their shit, KILL thru ANGER. They're obviously trying to prove to the world that they still have it. I don't think they were trying to do that w/ St. Anger, even though they may have said it at times. This next one is a big one, and everybody knows it. They won't let us down.....they're fucking METALLICA!!!

They never said it was a return to form. They said it was a return to aggro. And it was a very aggressive album, unfortunately they simply forgot how to make the snare, the guitars, and the vocals sound anywhere decent. lol. But the album makes sense for what they needed at the time. Does it really matter what all of us want to hear? St. Anger was their therapy.

I`m interested, as always. Metallica`s 80`s work was so remarkable that they deserve at least that from me even now. But I can`t be hopeful, it`s been too long and there have been too many disappointments. I`ll be chuffed to fuck if they surprise me and pull a rabbit out of the hat after all this time but I`ll remain skeptical for now...

Dude, you're flat out wrong about the 10 year thing.
1. U2's been around almoost 30 years and their last two albums were damn good after a couple of shit efforts (Zooropa and PoP)
2. The last Chili Peppers album was phenomanal, and they've been around for more than 20 years. Oh and was that Rick Rubin who produced?
3. It took the Stones almost 20 years to put out a shit album, and they were putting out more than 1 a year at one point.
4. Judas Priest's last album was pretty good. They've been around almost 40 years?
5. Iron maiden, The Scorpians, Celtic frost, King Diamond, Ozzy, Green Day, Joe Satriani, The Police (The list goes on). Just because The Beatles and Led Zep didn't last more than 10 years doesn't mean that the 10 year rule holds any water.

Theres no way these guys will ever put out another album that is on par with the stuff from the 80's...no way. At best I can only see them putting out something that is about as good as Load, which was quite average IMO.
After buying that steaming turd that they call St. Anger, I'll be approaching the new album with a lot of caution.

Word.
I immediately thought of Maiden when I read metal_lives' post. They put out a couple of real turds w/ Blaze... albeit evolutionary turds... Their last 3 studio efforts are the best since 7th Son came out in '88.
Anything is possible. But like many... I to am suffering from a severe case of What-the-fuck-itis when it comes to Metallica. We can only hope... and wait to hear it.

......and thank God there are better bands out there putting out new great metal. I've been a Metalica fan for way to long. The only credit I can give them at this point is, they left me wanting more. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be listening to half the shit I do now. I'd rather here a new Testament album then a new Metallica one. And if you want to listen to a band that breaks the 10 year thing, go listen to Clutch. They started out pretty heavy and now they aren't, but the music is still killer. Some bands can age and change, but most can't. Metallica should give it up.

I totally agree. I like the album, but I hardly listen to it as much as all the others. It really was what they needed at that time. I think the only thing I really don't like about St. Anger is the snare. IMO, if the snare were normal on the album, the whole thing would have been A LOT better off.
I can't wait for the new one. I will be at whatever store does the midnight sale here, first in line!

The biggest metal band in the world will reclaim its throne. That said, for god's sake James- grow yer hair out a little bit (adds credibility dont ya know) and please teach Rob how to headbang properly- no crabwalks needed. Metallica rules

Until I hear this, and most likely not even then, I refuse to believe Metallica can put out anything even remotely half-decent these days.
As soon as there's a new disc on the way, this futile hope somehow seems to revive itself and everyone immediately forgets all about just how long and how much they've sucked.

at one time i'da had a shit fit anticipating the release of new metallica... then there was load, then reload, then the abortion nu-metal st anger... on to brighter things, there's still mustaine, who has redeemed himself of his "risk" and i anticipate something killer from the mighty testament, when did they ever f$#k up? the ritual had a commercial tinge, but it still was a decent album. then immortal will unleash their arctic beast upon us. now that, i can't wait for.

Last great Metallica album, ....And Justice For All.
Black album? Their version of Def Leppard's 'Pyromania'. Sounded just OK, but a little bit off the mark. When you follow-up came out, you knew WHY. There were big changes coming, and not GOOD ones.
I think they peaked on Ride The Lightening. Damn. That's a LONG time ago.
Kill 'Em All - 8.5 Ride The Lightening - 10 Master of Puppets - 9.5 And Justice For All - 8 'Black' album - 6
Load - 5 Re-Load - 4 St. Anger - 2
Damn. Depressing to realize the coolest thing this band has done in the past 15 years was the covers set 'Garage Re-Revisited'.
At least I can say I first saw them on the Puppets tour. Can't even recorgnize them now. Next????

For the last time, he doesn't do shit. They even said it in this post! He goes, "That sucked, try something else. I'm gonna go do yoga while eating AGAIN, I'll be back in a week, be better when I come back." The reason the RHCP, System, and Slayer albums were good were because of those bands and their talent at playing and producing. They just used his equipment. Do you remember that he did the last Slipknot album, and that bit ass. They needed Ross Robinson to push them to that violent level, and for Corey not to be auditioning his Stone Sour voice for the industry. Either way, Rubin had very little to do with it. AC/DC said it best, the guy is a total Phoney, go back to rap. As for Selloutica, it's over! This is a reprint of a post before Shit. Anger came out. Oh, we are back! Bullshit! as long as its another master of puppets and not another black album. i severly hope it is nothing less than awesome, or all respect for the most influential metal band in history may be lost

Has anyone ever heard Dave talk about depending on a producer to find his 'essence' for him? Never.

I agree with metal_lives. When the years of hunger and creativity end, only experience and professionality remain. In the case of Metallica, "St.Anger" even lacked of these two.

the bitter disappointment I felt after listening through TBA the day it came out. I remember thinking "Come ON, you motherfuckers - speed that shit up!" "Oh please god let the NEXT song be at least SOMEWHAT thrashy" and so on throughout that entire album. I was once a huge fan but has been disappointed ever since.
For every album they put out after I've pretty much felt the same way, and St. Anger did absolutely nothing for me. I've heard that entire sorry-ass excuse for a Metallica album maybe 6-7 times in total, and I used to blast their first four albums constantly back in the day.
So in conclusion: I would love to be proven wrong again but hold no hopes whatsoever until that happens:
RIP Metallica: 1983-1989

it seems to me, and for many others too, that Metallica died with Cliff Burton. Don't get me wrong, though. Newstead was as good as a replacement as one could be expected to fill the massive void left by Burton's absence. But honestly, Jason's potential was never really given the chance. Try and find his bass lines in "...And Justice for All" (I have a red lollipop for you if you can find them). But anyway, as disappointed as I have been with their choice of Bob Rock as producer (if you can call him that...). St Anger was the result of them scraping the bottom of the barrel and it was time for a change for the better. Love them or hate them, you know as well as I that you will still be intrigued to hear the new shit, just as I am. It can't be worse than St. Anger but if it is, then I am gonna put the new album in a box, take a nice steamy crap on it and send it back to them. Here's to hoping for a return to form.

who is Metallica ? I think they are a pop band. let britney spears be in your band and at least you will be pure pop band, instead of virtual thrash-metal band, Otherwise there is no way for all of you but to let Dave Mustaine back in Metallica again, if you want to rock again of course.

That people think their opinion is always right and someone else's is always wrong. It's an opinion people, not a fact. Learn the difference.
My opinion, as someone who was a fan of this band from over 20 years ago, is that they are riding the success of albums that they released in the 80's. Look at all the comments in this thread.
"They put out great albums before! They will again!!!'
"They've always been great!"
Spare me. Load and Re-Load were pop music. The black album was a good hard rock record. St Anger was a complete joke. This band is what it is and it will never go back to being a thrash band. Anyone expecting another Master of Puppets is just deluding themselves and it's laughable how many people post things like "St Anger was garbage and I hate everything they've done in the last 15 years, but this WILL BE GREAT!!!".
Really? You really think this is going to be a great record? I've heard two 'new songs' so far and they both sound like the same shit that was on St Anger with the sorta fast and chunky guitars and James' weepy vocals.
You want to waste your money on this band? Cool. More power to you, but let's not bullshit about how great they still are. They're old, tired and arrogant and when this album comes out, it'll be more of the same.
I'd happily admit to being wrong if it comes out and it's great, but they lost me as a fan a long time ago when they started dictating what their fans should be.
Again, my opinion. If you don't like it, cry to someone who cares.

i really do think that they still have the kind of energy and mindset to put out another great album, if anyone saw them live on the sick of the studio '07, they know that thats prob the best they've played is a very long time. plus rick rubin is producing this album and if he thinks something sounds bad he'll just tell them it's shit and make something else.

I'm hoping for another classic from Metallica, and I believe they have it in them.Success, 'yes men', nose candy, Bob Rock...and other things messed 'em up since the Black Album. I believe that if Load and Reload were trimmed to a single cd it would have been lots better.History would be difrent. Also, the continual bashing of St. Anger. The band were falling or fallen apart, as witnessed in 'Some kind of Monster'.....so of course it would be sub-par. LIke the rehearsal dvd that came with it too.................still!!!!

Unless, it sounds worse than St. Anger. I can't imagine anything being worse than St. Anger. Maybe they were getting tired of Bob "Cock" Rock and this album wil be a new beginning. If anyone can bring the best out of a band, it's Rick Rubin. They have at least one more killer album in them. Let's hope it's this one.

that people use the opinion vs. fact debate when they are on the losing end of the debate. Kind of like the "I know you are but what am I?" in forums. FACT: Metallica hasn't written a thrash song since the 80's.

I'm looking forward to hearing the new album, though I'm not gonna get my hopes up based on what Hetfield/Ulrich and company are saying. And as far as Rubin goes... he's done some work with bands like Slayer, but 90% of his work is commercialized stuff by groups/people like The Smashing Pumpkins, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers, Johnny Cash, Audioslave, Limp Bizkit, The Mars Volta, Jay-Z, Weezer, Shakira, Neil Diamond, Dixie Chicks, Justin Timberlake, U2, Linkin Park, etc. Check out Wiki for a full list...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Rubin
Rubin may or may not be able to pull some good stuff out of Metallica, but I'm not ready to simply give him a pass like most people seem to be doing. At the very least, he seems much more willing to bend towards the pop/commercial side than Bob Rock was.

ive sang the praises of rick rubin since way before it was trendy to do so, but you people need to realize he's not some kind of savior, especially when helping metal bands. remember, he produced the last linkin park album.

I've loved Metallica forever and I am probably the only one who doesn't want to hear a return to any other album they've done. I don't want to hear Puppetz again even though that was like the greatest album ever. My absolute favorite thing about Metallica is that they continue to evolve. All of their albums are completely different. They always try new stuff and I love that!!! It may not always be great, but it's different... There are so many bands that just keep putting out the same album and it gets old! Metallica is rediculously diverse... Just think how different these albums are: Kill, Ride, Master, Justice, Black, Load, Reload, St Anger, S&M, Garage Days... Amazing! It's so sweet that Metallica can can continue to evolve as a band and make new stuff. I can't wait to hear the new sound and hope it is completely different than anything I've ever heard...
Metallica has been the best band for the last 25 years even if they haven't been very productive of late. St. Anger is a really good album, although it is Metallica's worst... I would rather listen to St. Anger before a bunch of the other stuff out there... Sweet Amber and the Unnamed Feeling are awesome songs. St. Anger is a good tune too...
PS. Dethklok is easily the second best band on earth behind Metallica.
