Yet another band that has to down-tune their instruments to accomodate their leadsinger's inability to sing the songs in the original key.

Are you being sarcastic or just stupid? Bands down tune for live performances ALL THE TIME. And Robert Plant is how old? Like 60-something? You can't honestly expect him to sound like he's 25

People need to stop being stupid...Plant is some 60 odd years old...he was in his twenties when he sang on the studio records. So far, the clips of the show look pretty good. Jimmy's playing is spot-on. The complete show will be all over the net soon. Judge then, and quit acting stupid for the moment.

He's lost his voice, too. Range is shot, and he sounds like he's got a mouthful of cardboard.
As for Plant, I think the lower tuning actually works for this band. Maybe it modernizes their sound a bit??

this show and possibly the pink floyd reunion at live 8, is the biggest thing to happen to music. i doubt very much that there's another band out there that could drum up the kind of interest led zep has over the past few months. if they do decide to tour, i'm sure they will shatter all previous ticket sales / gross earnings

That last line sums it up perfectly.
LZ sounds like music in tune with the earth. Floyd sound like music in tune with space.
I was blessed with excellent hearing and sight that said I receive a range of emotions when I listen to Zeppelin, as well when I listen to Floyd: both bands have an incredible body of work, great musicians and are excellent live acts. Their diversity is admired and respected worldwide just as Zeppelin left to rave reviews from tonight shows a world tour is off the charts in demand.
But here’s where Zeppelin goes that no band can, there heavy sound mixed with awesome lyrics and to you, sorry pal Floyd doesn’t have songs that rock like Achilles last stand, Rock & Roll, Black dog, Communication breakdown, Whole lot of love, The Ocean, Trampled Underfoot, For Your Life, The Wanton Song. And after reviewing this list its reminds why ZEPPELIN RULES!
Great Blues: Since I've Been Loving You, You Shook Me
Acoustic: Going to California, That’s the way, Black Country Woman, Gallows Pole, Hey Hey What Can I Do
Ballads: Thank You, The Rain Song, All My Love
Country: Hot Dog
Classics: Kashmir, Stairway To Heaven, Dazed And Confused, The Song Remains The Same, Immigrant Song, No Quarter, In My Time Of Dying, Ten Years Gone, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Achilles' Last Stand
Other great songs: Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You, Your Time Is Gonna Come, How Many More Times, What Is And What Should Never Be, The Lemon Song, HeartbreakerLiving Loving Maid (She's Just A Woman), Ramble On, Bring It On Home, Friends, Celebration Day, Gallows Pole, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, Hats Off To (Roy) Harper, Black Dog, Rock And Roll, The Battle Of Evermore, Misty Mountain Hop, Four Sticks, When The Levee Breaks, Over The Hills And Far Away, Dancing Days, D'yer Mak'er, The Ocean, Custard Pie, The Rover, Houses Of The Holy, Trampled Underfoot, In The Light, Down By The Seaside, Night Flight, Boogie With Stu, Black Country Woman, Sick Again, Royal Orleans, Candy Store Rock, Hots On For Nowhere, Tea For One, In The Evening, South Bound Saurez, Fool In The Rain, Carouselambra, I'm Gonna Crawl, Travelling Riverside Blues, Wearing And Tearing, Ozone Baby

What a terrible comment. Of course you know that No Led Zeppelin albums has sold more copies that either Darkside of the Moon or The Wall.
The Floyd already had 3 original albums out before Led Zeppelin's debut which contained mostly cover songs.
I feel that Pink floyd's writing and arrangements are far more impressive, and each album has its own feel, and mood, whereas Zep is all over the map on each recording. A Floyd record is like an overture with differant movemets. A Led Zeppelin album is a collection of kick ass songs. Also, just to throw in, No member of Led Zeppelin has released a solo effort anywhere neer the quality of a Roger Waters or David Gilmour album.
(Oh, and obviously I don't need to compare the Live Stage Shows. Floyd Hands Down)
Like I've said before, I LOVE both Bands, and know both bands inside and out. And after diving deep into both bands for Many Many years, I tend to have more respect for Pink Floyd and hold them in higher regard than Zeppelin. But hey to each his own....

Some people have it, other's don't! AGE should NEVER be a fucking excuse. If you're not up to it, don't embarrass yourself. If you have to downtune your own songs a notch and STILL sounds horrible, that's not a good sign.
Either way, lucky for him , people will still pay anything to see them live again, because we all like to think that the time never catch us and it is still 1970 and even if it sould like a dog barking on the stage, their minds will process it like it was the second coming..

What do you mean age should never be an excuse? Dont you think that if these folks could sing like the old days they would? Age is a huge factor of voice. I saw Judas Priest last year and, unlike some of his cringing off nights that I've seen online, was brilliant. Sure, he held back in parts but then wAILED in others. That's professionalism for you. The same with tori amos a few weeks ago. She was absolutely powerful, but also restrained herself in some instances which enabled her to kick ass overall. I know that it sounds like some vocalists dont even try, but it's not always possible to rekindle the old abilities. As for Dio, he's a classical musician who treats his voice like Pavoroti. it shows. I do know what your saying though. You should at least work at gatting your voice back if your aa vocalist. But it aint always that easy. James Hetfield has worked his ass off to get his aggression back and he sounds great lately. Tom Aria, well that's a different matter. You want a great vocalist who really still has it? Ann Wilson.

Zeppelin has sold more albums than Floyd. Floyd is a better band but I still like Zeppelin better, but that is just me. Floyd is a lot better than a lot of bands but I still don't personally like them. It is possible you appreciate a bands talent and still not be interested in them at all.
Also Geddy Lee has to downtune 2112 but he still sounds awesome, if not better. You get old, and your voice changes that isn’t an excuse, it is the way life is. It is like yelling at an old man because he can’t get a boner like he used to when he was 20.

But that's my take. If i learned anything in life is that you reap what you sow.
100% agreed on your points on Ann Wilson, Tori Amos, Hetfield and Araya.

Couldn't have said it better myself. No age should NOT matter, and if it does then GIVE IT UP! if a band is going to reunite and put on a show for ridiculous money then they better damn well sound good, if not amazing! This is not 1970, this is the tail end of 2007. If you want to be sentimental then listen to the records or watch old live performances. Even the mighty Rob Halford has had issues through the years keeping his voice on top. Voices change, it is a fact of life.
The only thing that matters is feeling and power, and these guys look like they still have both.
Robert Plant is an amazing singer, even though half his range is gone. His range had nothing to do with why he is a great singer, his ability to fucking kick ass as a front man and do what he does with pure emotion is what makes him one of the best.

First, please let me disassociate myself from some of the "crazy Americans" refered to above.
I personally think the show sounded great! Of course things are going to be differant after 25+ years. It's great to see them together whether it be for this one off show or a full fledged tour in the future (if a tour happens PLEASE COME TO DETROIT, MICHIGAN U.S.A.!).
As for everybody comparing P.F. & Dio to L.Z. in my opinion all three bands are differant. It's great to see Ronnie out on the Heaven and Hell tour and if Pink Floyd did another tour I am sure it would do very well with their large following (they were never my favorite, but I have seen them twice and they are a great live show).
The bottom line is this....if you are a ZEP fan you will enjoy watching these clips they are really good. If your not a ZEP fan you are going to bash these clips as well as original clips from the 1970's.
Just my 2 cents. Take care!!!

First off, judging from those clips, Led Zeppelin sounds phenonmenal downtuned, in fact the drop down in tuning adds a heavier, down and dirty vibe to their already classic songs! Secondly, how can you bash their current abilities, for a bunch of guys in their 60's they sound tighter and heavier then half the young guns in metal, rock, etc...Seriously, were you going to expect Robert Plant to hit those notes like he did in his 20's? The ZEP is back and I predict they will not only tour but attempt to record a new album....I would be so fuckin curious to hear some new material from them...and I KNOW Jimmy Page has the songwriting magick in his blood still. Now here on Blabbermouth I find it funny that a Led Zep vs Pink Flyd debate has surfaced. How can you compare both bands? They are both equally great, but how much wax is jammed in your ear if you can't hear the obvious difference between both bands, Led Zep was pure heavy blues rock, where as Pink Floyd was dreamy, spacey laid back rock. I pity you fools who are childish enough to engage in this debate. As for Hail Ronnie James Dio? How the fuck is his name getting mentioned in a blurb about Led Zep? I respect Dio fans for being so dedicated to your god, but sorry, Ronnie may have had a good voice, but his ghoulish dungeons and dragons metal/rock always seemed a bit cheesy to me. Plus He never was Black Sabbath. Ozzy was. All together i have a massive boner and a smile on my face today because the world now has not only Van Halen (with DLR) but Led Zeppelin...Praise the heavens! These were the first two bands i ever listened to before i moved on to Metallica, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Soulfly, Ministry, AIC, Suffocation, Soundgarden, Helmet, Fugazi, GG Allin.etc....OH and if you want to discover one of the best ever underground rock/metal bands check out The Mentors!! Formed in 1976, these guys with their black executioner hoods, perverse, cutting edge x-rated lyrics, and led by the legendary EL Duce aka Eldon Hoke (RIP brother) put out some of the most wayyyyy out there rock that's on another level. They are the reason their are parental advisory stickers on recordings. Remember the PMRC hearings in Washington DC in the 1980's? The Mentors started this whole controversy, created incredible music, didn't give a fuck about what anybody thought of them and managed to stay underground because they wrote lyrics about having anal sex with chicks, compulsive masterbating, drugs, drinking, etc....NO one else went where they dared!! I had the great fortune of being friends with El Duce (drummer/vocalist} of the band and he was one of the nicest, coolest and funniest guys I ever met. Some punk metal band that i was in back in 1994 had the fortune of opening up for The Mentors at The Roxy in Long Island, NY!! I back then at age 19 booked the fucking show on top of playing there!! Sorry to rant about The Mentors but I GUARANTEE you people you will dig these guys. They are back together, though EL Duce has since passed on, original bassist DR. Heathen Scum is handling vocals!! 1. For the douche who made the solo album comment. Ever hear of Pictures at 11, Now and Zen and Manic Nirvana? I believe if you check sales figures, any one or them outsold the entire collected solo works of Gilmour and Waters. Now and Zen was a phenomenal album, and "Ship of Fools" actually would have fit on a Zep record. Oh, and ever hear of The Firm?
2. Virtually every band downtunes live. You just can't recreate studio conditions in a live setting. If you hear a band that doesn't downtune and sounds good, well their eith using tapes, outright lipsynching, or a death metal band.
3. i would love to see a Pink Floyd reunion, but Zep is WAY bigger. And I am a Floyd fan. But it's like trying to compare the Red Sox to the Patriots. They are both the best at what they do, fucking phenomenal, but they aren't the same.

You guys really show your ignorance.
A. Plant lost the ability to reproduce the "studio" recording live midway through their career, so what? Zep as professioanls down tuned and put on a good show.
Is anyone here that is being such a hard ass on Palnt and actual singer, and can sing well and understands all of the factors involved?
Yes, if Plant had retrained himself at a much younger age to save his voice and use it well with the correct vocal technique, and also avoided all of the poisons that fuck with your voice and took care of himself well he would have been better.
Frankly I have heard Robert much much worse, so comparatively he is doing fine to accomodate based on his current factors.
Dio is NOT what he once was as a LIVE singer, all you need to do is watch the DVD from Radio City, good yes, but not who he was 20 years ago. In the studio he can do quite fine though.
Also, Halford is NOT what he once was as live singer either.
Yes, Halford and Dio did take the steps earlier one to save their voices, but still they did lose somewhat in ability.
Life goes on, and you armchair critics and frustrated musicians really need to wake up and grow up and gain some perspective.
Very very very few singers that really PUSH themselves vocally in the studio can reprodice that live to the studio quality, and still it is not the same, it never is.
I do hope Zep tours, I will be there, I love the heavy down tuning to D tuning, awesome, so fucking heavy.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. It's a free world. I am actually a singer since i was 16, and approaching 40, and still singing , so I am perfectly aware of "all the factor involved" as you eloquently put it.
Of course I am not Robert Plant, but i can still sing the ZEP catalog without the neeed to ask to my fellow musicians to downtune everything to the pits of hell and pretend is cool to sound "dark" and "heavy" .. You do realize that this gig is for charity, right?
So you are a singer and you can pull it off the entire zep cataloge as you say, well you can post the clips of you live singing Led Zep for everyone here to criticize then.
It's a charity gig, charity.
Some people are way too hard on others, this is not Ozzy where it is more than clear that he is toast.
Robert lost the ability to be the Robert of the early days in the mid 70's, he could have saved himself if he either had the correct information to do so and the desire to so, it never happend, so this is all that is left.
You have your opinion, and you can choose to not attend a potential tour, and you might as well not even bother watching the clips then. Whatever, like what you want as invictus put it.......some of us KNOW how it should sound and are more forgiving to the ones who actually wrote the songs and created them.

Well, I think that they sound better than I expected, I thought Plant would sound worse, what I hear is ok so far........and well the music sounds pretty damn large sounding and tight from the couple of minutes I heard, but I will need to hear everything to give a true opinion, not that my opinion means anything at all......
What I heard is good enough to see live and enjoy, in an arena or club, but not a stadium...........i hate stadium shows unless you are close up.......I am being forgiving as well....because I choose to, not due to being unaware of what would be perfect sounding.....
When I go to a show, I tell the critic in me to go fuck himself, and I enjoy the show! It's a good thing to find enjoyment and to look for the positive as opposed to those who look for the negative.

ok.. i dunno how u can compare these 2.i say the same thing when me n my friends do this...cuz it does come up a lot. Led Zeppelin are the thunder Gods, no matter what ne1 says..and theres really nothing you can do about it. im with that one post way up there...i go thru these phases where all i do is listen to Floyd...or on the other hand all i do is listen to Zep. if its not those 2 i listen to everything..oh and the beatles, but this isnt about them..theyre sumthin else lol..
...they sounded phenomenal (zep) monday night..Robert Plant sounded better, way better than i thought..hes 60 and hes still got a better voice then ANY ANY band today. Jason, John Bonhams son did an outstanding job filling in for his dad.who u could argue after watching Moby Dick live could be the best and most tasteful drummer of all time. at least hes definitely up there.
i mean as for Floyd, i am as the same deeply passionate about..but as 4 pure musicianship, and being a guitarist ill take The Thunder Gods any day, cuz if u think about it..who better to copy from, than Jimmy Page ( all the present day bands know what im talking about) if your a musician you know.a true musician

any of you HATERS could listen to these clips, especially the clip of Kashmir and think that this performance was sub par? If you don't like the band, that's one thing, but any fan should be impressed...
Also, let's see how many of you can cause a global stampede for tickets to your reunion show in 30 years. Maybe then we'll see if you can do better. Until then... pie holes... zip em.
COMMENT | The male voice posted by : JackBurton 12/11/2007 12:21:06 PM
The male voice doesn't stop changing until a man is nearly 30 years old. The first Zep album came out when Plant was 20. Add to that the fact that, in the late 60s, there weren't exactly great vocal monitors--Plant pushed his voice really hard during performances during that point in time. You can also hear (especially on Zep I) that he was getting a lot of his vocal grit from the throat, which is a horrible thing to do to your voice. Listen to any Zep after ZepIII--his voice had already changed. Listen to anything from the late 70's and it's different again. Factor in years of alcohol and drug use, smoking, and the effects of being on the road for years doing 3-hour (or longer) shows, and you have Robert Plant by the Zeppelin breakup.
I'll give him a one-step tuning drop for that.

COMMENT | Go watch the spice girls instead! musical retards posted by : sam_jamison 12/11/2007 12:50:21 PM
All of you who are bashing the greatest band ever for downtunig probably wouldnt even have noticed if they hadnt made it public themselves. Obviously you are musically retarded so i suggest that you goto the Spice Girls reunion shows instead. Im sure they will sound exactly like they do on your cd as they will be lipsyncing. A live performance isnt supposed to sound the same as the record, it if did what would be the point. Zeppelin always did improvise their material onstage. rarely playing the same version as before.

The reviews are in ZEPPELIN was outstanding @ the 02; critics, fans and now even the raw video footage prove once again why ZEP rules.
AND Floyd fans once again, like I said Floyd is great but is not even ahead of the Stones, The Who or of course the Beatles Floyd is great and that's all you folks can ask for so enjoy your band but this is ZEPPELIN Territory and its ZEPPELINS time in the spotlight again, long deserved.
It has been spoken so let it be written ZEP RULES!

You know, I was just gonna check out the zep vids my friend linked me too and leave it at that. Then I saw all this fucking imbecilic pussy assed banter going on and, well, I had to sign up and put my two cents forward . . . WTF is wrong with you people? Regardless of whether or not Zep lived up to your lofty expectations or not, regardless as to whether or not they were "perfect" or made mistakes. . . I could go on and on, but I won't. This is esentually all I have to say: You people that have even one fucking negative thing to say about this show, you all need to turn off your computer, close your eyes, relax for a moment, and just stop and consider what you are trying to prove. I mean, it's like, "hello? Do you have a life at all? Do you have any idea what the fuck you are doing? I mean, why would anyone in their right (or even left) mind say one fucking negative thing about this band? I don't give a fuck what they sound like . . . this is fucking Led Zepplin for Christ sake! Ya know? GET A LIFE---TUNE INTO SOME KIND OF REALITY, even if for only a moment. You might learn something. Assholes! Oh yeah, GOOD STUFF!
you got it man....but i thought that the male voice can improve up to an even older age than 30.....
COMMENT | Also about Kashmir posted by : Zoo Keeper 666 12/11/2007 6:31:57 PM
Kashmir is performed in studio tuning and not tuned down, so not every song has an altered tuning from the studio version, only the ones that they felt were necessary to down tune.
Also about high notes, Plant does hit the high C as in Good Times Bad Times, and he also hits a high C in Kashmir, and they sound good and strong like Plant does.
Just played around here latelly, it were cool to see Dio and some sabbath guys doing their jobs. never been much a dio fan , but got to meet the guy and one thing I may say, the guy is a gent, for christ sake he were able to remember the name of every one in the room.
