Review: LED ZEPPELIN 'Was Rehearsed, Ready And Out To Kill'

David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine has penned a lengthy review of LED ZEPPELIN's reunion concert which took place Monday night (Decemebr 10) at the O2 arena in London. An excerpt follows: "For the second encore of their first full concert in twenty-seven years, at London's 02 arena last night, LED ZEPPELIN tore into 'Rock And Roll', from their untitled fourth album, with a joyful vengeance. As drummer Jason Bonham hammered with the ghostly precision and ferocity of his late father, guitarist Jimmy Page fired dirty chunks of Chuck Berry and bassist John Paul Jones kept iron time with familiar reserve, singer Robert Plant sang the most obvious words of the night: 'Been a long time since I rock and rolled.' Overhead, images of a much younger ZEPPELIN, in concert during the early and mid-Seventies, flashed on a huge digital-video screen. In those films, LED ZEPPELIN were the biggest, loudest and most cocksure band in rock. Jimmy Page's now snow-white hair was still jet black; Robert Plant was a golden god, not yet a Viking elder, and the late John Bonham — whose death in 1980 abruptly ended ZEPPELIN's reign — still ruled the engine room. "But the band that played underneath those memories last night was not the one that misfired at Live Aid in 1985 or again in New York in 1988. This one was rehearsed, ready and out to kill. Well I guess we are only waiting on the couple of show dates. I don't think they will ever embark on a World Tour, but maybe like a date here a date there. So when is the next date?

A band feeds off the drums. In my opinion, it all starts there - then the bass. A band relies on this to really get moving. The SRTS clip looked killer.
Why shouldn't they keep it moving. The legacy. It's tough when you were the best there ever was and will ever be.

I'm not a Led Zeppellin fan and I've been saying this will be a train wreck since it was announced, but from what I've seen and heard they pulled it off - they look and sound great.

but decided not to go. For the money i reconsidered and in my own opinion i was right not to go.
I'll be seeing Maiden instead! More energy and a vocalist that can still sing! Don't get me wrong, I love Zep, but last nights show looked poor in my opinion.

It's funny to read everyone's opinions about this show and the band it's self. People in the industry, music scribes, fellow musicians and true music enthusiest know the significance of this show and all seem to be in agreement. Zeppelin killed it and disappointed nobody who had realistic expectations. I especially love the lames that say.. "Don't get me wrong.. I like Led Zeppelin.. blah blah blah.. Then go on to say a bunch of stupid stuff about Page beeing sloppy and Plant not being able to sing his own songs anymore. Get real! They put on a great show as anyone who was actually there will tell ya. "Worth every penny", yes I am sure it was. Let the unqualified opinions and mindless comparisons to Dio fall on deaf ears. This vocalist/musician will give these legends the credit they deserve. Rock on Boys you did yourselves proud to say the least!! Not a single bad review from a "reputable" source as of yet.

You didn't like it that's your opinion and now you're trying to convince others to come around to your impression sorry I don't hear it the way and neither did 99% of the critic’s review of the show or the fans interviewed or commenting that were there.
BTW, in my opinion the only reason the show wasn’t a complete slam dunk was the song set list, if the band had played All my love, Black Country Woman and either Tangerine the Rain Song, Going to California, Your Time Is Gonna Come, In The Light, or That's The Way and shelved two of the longer songs from the set I would’ve called it a complete slam dunk.

I don't care that it was detuned...lots of bands do that, and yea I understand their in their 60's......but plant was WAY OUT OF KEY and his cracking voice was worse than an unprepared 3rd grade

Man, I'm just not hearing the "out of key" bullshit that's being thrown around. As someone who tries to be objective, I went back and listened to all the available clips again...this time, not even watching the video--trying to surpress the excitement of it all (as a drummer, I have to say, young Bonham KILLED), and yes, the tuning is down a half-step, but it's hardly that noticeable. But, still, what I hear is a singer who's voice is definitely aging and isn't what it was when he was 25 (naturally), but still strong...in key...and on the money. Just as a comparison, I put on the "How the West Was Won" 3 CD set to listen to him from '73... There are times, even back then, where he sounded a little "off" somehow. The thing is, NO singer can really create the same performance live as they lay down to vinyl/CD, and this goes for all the great front men (Jagger, Daltry, Ozzy, etc). Anyway, I wish everyone would stop all the bitching and moaning. This was a great performance--one which *could* catapult them into more things (tour? record?). I'm certain that if they did make a new record, his voice would be sweetened nicely in the studio (like any other singer...even singers half his age). Long live Zeppelin.

it's funny, but i thought plant sounded better than he has in a long time. sure they downtuned a whole step and maybe thats whats throwing people off but for the most part plant was in key and sounded great. btw plenty of (younger) bands drop down when they tour so the singer can keep going

well I've stated many times that ZEP are legends....I mean no disrespect, but at the same time I find it disrepsectful that they would sell this as an amazing sounding performance
look all of my bad reviews aside, I would never try to take anything away from the mazing work LED has made in the world of music
thats why I feel that SOMEONE should tell it like it is and just say that plant is no good anymore.....if your OK with that, then go to the next LED show and enjoy
I saw VANHALEN with roth this year, and for the most part I thought it was good, but I wont lie and say DLR can hit that squawking sound from the old LP's, because he can't
I also saw the reunited CREAM and thought they were great, but when people ask me if there were any bad parts I don't lie, because WHITE ROOM I thought sounded awful at the show I went to,....but the rest was great

I'm not trying to be negative, but plants voice is such a HUGE PART of ZEPPLIN.....with it not sounding up to par, I can't help but express my opinion that he did not sound good. The rest of the band sounded fine, and I think JASON really pulled off his dads material good and respectable way.
I have posted on blabber for years, but never till now Have people lashed out at me like this. Of course its because ZEP are 1 of the biggest bands of all time, so there are tons of fans that are gonna defend them till the death. I understand that 100%
And even if you think my review of plants voice was harsh, theres some people acting like he sounded better than ever....which is far from the truth

IMHO, while I could only access the Kashmir video, it sounded spot on. Everyone sounded great so I'm not sure why all the negativity here. Damn near made the hair on my ass stand on end to see Zep sound like Zep of old.
