Vocalist MATT BARLOW Rejoins ICED EARTH

ICED EARTH mainman/guitarist Jon Schaffer has issued the following statement: "Hello, dear friends! "Once again the winds of change are upon us, and this time I can say that I am very happy about the result. "While out on the European tour I had several in-depth discussions with many loyal ICED EARTH fans. A common theme of these discussions was how much Matt is missed. I agreed with the fans that things were not the same and that it was a very special period in ICED EARTH's history. "When I heard several months ago that Matt [ Barlow] was going to be doing a project in music again, I was thinking about contacting him and seeing what his intentions were. I didn't act on this because I was so focused on the writing of the new epic, and frankly, it just didn't seem realistic. "Well, after getting out on the road and speaking with many of you directly, I decided to call Matt and see how he was doing and if he was interested in working together again. I am proud to say that he is coming back to ICED EARTH and we will be getting back to work in the studio very soon. " Matt will be singing on Part 2 of the 'Something Wicked' concept CD and we will be looking forward to getting out on tour and delivering a series of ICED EARTH shows that will rival any in the history of the band. And there will be a proper DVD filmed from this period, something we’ve all been waiting for. "I want you all to know that it was you who made this a reality. I have missed Matt's presence onstage and in my personal life in a big way over the past few years, so I appreciate your honesty in our discussions. It did help me realize the decision to move forward with pursuing this. The fans have spoken and we have delivered! "You true fans know that I'm a straight shooter, I say what I mean and mean what I say. And though I value your opinions greatly, you must believe that this is a decision that comes completely from the heart and is not motivated by anything other than what feels the best for ICED EARTH. This is the way that things have always been dealt with, for better or for worse, but always honestly and from the heart. " Tim Owens is a great and talented singer and I wish the best for him and his future on a personal and professional level. "There will be more news soon as to further developments and plans. This will push back the release of Part 2 a bit. Not because we couldn't be ready to record in time, but because of a new addition to Matt's family in early 2008! "I am very happy to announce that ICED EARTH is truly BACK!"

When Tim joined Jon stated that he could now have his songs sang the way he originally intended them to sound. At the time, he did make some less-than-flattering comments about Matt's vocal abilities.
Hopefully Matt will still record with Pyramaze.

I feel bad for Tim Owens and even feel a little bad for Pyramaze (seeing as Barlow was gonna sing for them, and I assume that is over now), but in the end, it is the best thing ever.
Tim owens is a great singer, but he lacks that passion that Barlow has in his voice.

He keeps replacing charismatic frontmen and then getting let go. It could probably happen to any replacement. Perhaps Tim would be best just staying in an original project. I didn't think Tim was right for either Priest or Iced Earth, personally.
For Priest I think they should have gotten Russ Anderson.
To this day, I think that Owens' best music/performance was on Winter's Bane's debut, Heart of a Killer! And now Winter's Bane are doing great!

I have been dreaming of this ever since Tim joined the band. I was never a fan of Tim in Iced Earth, but have always listened to the old albums nearly obsessively.
His voice just wasn't "Iced Earth"...
I still can't believe this is true. Iced Earth was one of the first bands that got me into metal and this is something I've been hoping for ever since Matt's departure. Can't wait to hear the next REAL Iced Earth album!

I have to disagree with the majority of the statements here. While Matt Barlow is obviously a talented singer in his own right, Ripper blows him away in power and in range and in overall ability. This was a tragic mistake. Why fix something if it ain't broken? Barlow could have made a guest appearance on the new album, but Ripper is the better choice for permanent frontman.
I have $10 that says this reunion doesn't last longer than one album.

All one has to do is look at the revolving door of musicians that have come and gone in this band to realize what an egotistical prick Jon is to work with...he makes Dave Mustaine seem like a nice guy. Ripper is the better singer IMO too, he just got fucked again.

Ripper has 2 other bands he is singing for now and maybe he felt that he could not devote the time to those and still sing and tour with IE so Jon heard the fans and gave Matt a call.
Tim is a damn good singer and has tremendous range, no doubt but he has never been the sound of IE.

Just because Tim can scream like a banshee(and there is nothing wrong with that) it does NOT mean that he is better.
Have any of you seen them live with Tim vs Live with Barlow?? All tim does is throw punches, grab the mike with both hands, and appear unprofessional and unrehearsed. What he lacks in soul he compensates in screams, TOTALLY not what Iced Earth needs.
Still, i do like tim, though his voice tires me if he screams too much..a good sample of GREAT singing on his part is on the JP song Cathedral Spyres, AMAZING SINGING...
As for Barlow, look up their videos on youtube, listen to ANY song sung by him..there's enough proof of how good he is.

Tim is a good singer, but he didn't fit with Iced Earth. He might have more power and range (although he never really strayed from the highs), but Barlow has so much more emotion in his voice. I'm excited to see how this turns out.

But honestly, I could care less about the SW concept now. Schafer should just go get another group of musicians and make another batch of Horror Show-esque songs.

Disappointed personally, I thought FA was Iced Earth`s best work and that was partly down to Ripper`s phenomenal vocal work. I see this as a step back, just as it looked like the band were finally going places this will just knock everything sideways again.

Sucks for Ripper, yes, but Matt Barlow IS iced Earth. For all those people who think that Ripper is the better singer, I have this to say: Maybe the guy has an amazing range, but so does Mariah Carey. It is HOW Matt sings that makes him the better vocalist. Range isn't everything, it's how you use it. Welcome back Matt!

Fuck you, Schaffer. You said Tim Owens was the perfect singer for Iced Earth and I agreed 100%. Something Wicked part one was an AMAZING album because of Ripper and now the next one is going to be delayed and vocally inconsistent.

Why not record the new album with both vocalists? Work together to bring out both of their strengths.
I think that Barlow and Ripper are both very talented singers. The last few IE albums have not been all that exciting in my opinion. They have bored me on the whole. I have little to know interest in the new concept album with or without Barlow, becuase part 1 was so boring.

Someone compared this to the Ozzy/Dio situation with Black Sabbath, and I think that is pretty fitting.
Dio and Owens have better singing ability and range, but Ozzy and Barlow are more suited to the music (and therefore are better fits)

Maybe it was Tim that told Jon he wanted to leave. With Beyond Fear and now Wintersbane coming up, Tim might not have had the time to do a US tour with IE and that Tim just needed to leave. So Jon calls up Matt to see whats going on and next thing you know....

Never expected to read that. Good news though personally, I thought Ripper was just starting to fit with Iced Earth. The new record and his vocals on it are fantastic.
I have missed Matt in IE though because he really did become the voice of that band over the years and it was sad to see him step away from music. Looking forward to SW part 2 and I really think they should rerecord part 1 with Matt just to make the concept complete sort to speak. Welcome back Matt.

Barlow fits much better with IE. Great to see him back. Make Something Wicked part 2, and then go back to Athens for part 2 of that and do both albums. Better than having to re-record SW part 1.

Would have liked Ripper to finish the concept and record the DVD. My homie saw Ripper during the Gettysburg tour and said Ripper really handled the classics well. Would've liked to have seen/heard it.

I am sure that I am just repeating what many of the people have already stated, but I couldn't be happier that Matt is back. There is no questioning Tim's talents. Matt was and should always be going forward the voice of Iced Earth. It just fits.
Congrats on this balsy move Jon. Without question one of the best moves you could have made for your band's career.

well this sucks for me cause i didnt start liking iced earth untill they got tim . i am so surprised how many people dont like him , the glorious burden in my opinion is one of the best power metal albums of the decade . but im glad to see a band thats doing what the majority of fans want , i wish exodus would do the same and get zetro back .

But fuck it why not just keep both? jeje it would be interesting to here a metal band with two frontmen with such different voices, i dunno it sucks for Owens, i had finally gotten into his style of singing, TGB was shit but i actually liked FA, anyway i do like his work on Beyond Fear better than anything he did with IE, he should stick with that band, at least its his, and hopefully Matt will remain for a long time on IE.

Definitely awesome news, but it seems that Jon can't make his mind up on how he wants the band to sound. He's stated before that he liks Ripper's vocals better and that's the sound he was looking for when first hearing Ripper sing, but now Matt is back and Ripper of course is getting the boot, so I guess I'm just going to have to not get attached to certain musicians in this band, 'cause the line up will always change. Hopefully Matt will stay for good, and still be able to have a nice career as a police officer. I'm guessing Ripper will focus soley on Beyond Fear, and Pyramaze has announced through Myspace that Matt will still be in the band, and a statement from him will come soon. I was just getting used to Ripper's vocals too, but oh well, MATT IS BACK!

Thinking about it now, it was interesting to hear Ripper sing the classic IE songs on tour..but it's gonna be even more interesting to see how Barlow's gonna handle the GB & FA material in the next tour. while I am a huge Matt fan, I enjoyed their cds with Tim as well. I don't have a problem with the change but the timing sucks. You should have done it either prior to the concept cds or waited till after.

Matt Barlow has returned.
Ripper Owens is out of Iced Earth.
These two guys are phenominal at what they do, much respect here!
Don't knock either one of them for their sound. They've spent they're whole life creating their voices and styles of singing.
I'm proud of both of them and wish both many great years to come.
Jon Schaffer did what was best for his original Iced Earth fans. He takes care of them. He heard the call of his fans. He LISTENED, how great is that? A band member actually listened to his fans and gave them what he thought was in their best of interest. BEAUTIFUL!!! This does not happen much at all. We should be happy of him for his contributions to his legions of fans and respect for them.
Ripper Owens has the harder road when it comes to bands, agreed!!
But don't rip on John Schaffer for it, Ripper wasn't kicked out of priest by him. These are individual band decisions made by the bands that he's worked with. NO ONE here is a "bad" guy.
There all great! be respectful of that. Doesnt mean you have to like the band. But if you don't like the music don't rip on anybody.

Hopefully someday Ripper will be appreciated the way he should be. He has helped 2 of metals best bands stay afloat and got kicked in the teeth for it. I can't believe the bad luck this guy has. Ripper is one of metals best vocalists period. I could care less about stage presence or carisma. Ripper owns in every way. I do like Barlow and think he has a incredible voice but I think it was handled wrong. As a good friend of mine said Barlow does Paul Satnley better then Paul Stanley

i cant believe this, this is awesome news, i mean i like ripper and feel bad for the guy but this is better for the band
Now to CLARIFY something, people find this whole situation confusing as to how Jon could do this but here is my best attempt at explaining. BARLOW LEAVING WAS NOT JON'S CHOICE. Matt wanted to leave because he was unhappy with the music industry and felt he wanted to do something to make a difference in the world. HE left to join law enforcement. Now Matt started to show interest in doing music again with Pyramaze so Jon used it as an opportunity to reach out to him and see if he wanted to come back. Matt coming back is what MOST iced earth fans want and is probably a better fit for the band. Ripper is a great singer but he was a replacement. Jon would not have reached out to him if Matt had not quit in the first place.
This all seems kind of shady but i think it was done in the best interest of the band and the fans of the band. Ripper is a great guy and im sure he will find something new for himself.

Since Jon re-recorded the Something Wicked trilogy with Tim, hopefully he'll re-record TGB trilogy with Barlow or all of TGB for that matter & FA. That small part on TGB that Barlow sings, is the best part of the album. No disrespect to Tim, but I quit listening to IE when he took over vocals.

HORRIBLE TIMING SCHAFFER! This should've happened after the Something Wicked series or before. Barlow is great. Tim however, saved this band. Iced Earth gained more fans then lost when Tim joined. From looking at album sales and chart positions that is pretty obvious. I never took IE serious until Ripper joined. Considering how many singers (and other band members) IE has had doesn't reflect well on schaffer. I guess he's the Eddie Van Halen of his genre. That means he's a control freak and an asshole. Good luck to Tim, he's much more talented vocalist that Barlow. Tim will have success wherever he lands. Good luck to Barlow and Iced Earth too. We'll, at least we'll all be able to appreciate the comic relief of Barlow's vocals again to accompany the same damn power chords that schaffer has been dishing out for nearly 20 years. I'm sure I'll still buy the new album with Barlow. I'll definitely buy anything Ripper is even involved with!! I still think they should've waited until the U.S. tour was finished to make this change.

As much as I like the idea of Tim in Anrthax, he should concentrate on Winters Bane and/or Beyind Fear! Unless Savatage wants to regroup and bring him on board :-)

He's an amazing singer and a good frontman, but something just wasn't right, no matter how hard I tried to accept it. Barlow is a truly original frontman. His voice stands out from all the rest. This is just like what Anthrax did to John Bush. I love Iced Earth and, can't wait to hear new music from them with Barlow but, it sucks that Ripper got dissed YET again. (Priest, I could understand. Halford rules.. but, then, he got no credit for being the inspration for the movie ROCK STAR..and, now this..)
(However, Priest and Iced Earth have helped establish him as a household name so, I'm sure will hear more great stuff from him.)

Barlow was really good in IE. Kind of liked the singer off Stormrider a bit more (Greely?)
I enjoyed having Ripper sing for IE. thought he has done an excellent job.
Now i could care less.
Barlow will do the studio work, then bail when it comes time to tour.

I will certainly miss the over the top vocal harmonies, and framing armageddon 2 may not be as good. Who knows. I love Barlow's work though, and am happy he is back. Terrible time to do it though. It will not be very cohesive at all. Ripper on one, Barlow on the other. Give me a break. Barlow can't quite hit the high's like Ripper can. Good luck singing "the clouding". I am now very worried about the follow up. Why not just have Ripper finish SW, then have Barlow come back. Schaffer can't even finish what he started. What a prick.

I still say this is screwed from the start.
Another thing I just realized - When Barlow left, he had to go back to school the get the education needed to launch his law enforcement career. Seems to me that's one MORE reason he may yet leave again, a reason he didn't even have the first time around.
Now when he's ready to bail, he knows he can go resume a real career in short order.
Shit >>> Anthrax >>> Iced Earth
And good luck to Owens, a cool dude with an awesome talent. Hope he shows Schaffer how it's supposed to be done with whatever project he goes to next.

...i got into IE after he joined... having gone back to the catalog, i like barlow, too, but i felt that tim would take them to the next level, popularity-wise...
to a large extent, barlow is the 'classic' voice of the band, but it only brought the band so much success, at least in the u.s.; i wonder what kind of tours IE will be able to latch onto now with barlow back... i know that IE has been a club headliner, but by the same token, jon has been quoted recently as being open to the idea of being an opener on a big tour stateside (definitely did it for heaven & hell in europe)...
all i am saying is that with barlow back, this will at best only keep them at the same level that the band has ever known... plus, i agree with a lot of others here that barlow is no lock to continue to stay with the band for a prolonged period of time...
btw, anthrax is cheesy enough to go after ripper now, even after announcing that joe no-name is the new singer... they would explain it with something like 'you don't get many opportunities to work with such a voice', blah, blah, blah...
also, barlow is a cop? i thought he had been pursuing an anti-terrorist specific job...

I love him and Russell Allen for their intensity[and for that matter, Schaffer is a fucking shitty guitarist compared to Mike Romeo] I believe Halford is better for Priest, but no fucking way Matt Barlow is half as good as Ripper. He's good, but never has he had a high profile gig like Judas Priest. Everybody and their mother praises Barlow, but why?

I'm ecstatic!
But my next thought is: "Great, now that the voice is back it's time Jon wrote something interesting and got a producer who can thicken up the sound."
The last album had a few good tracks, but overall Tims vocals blew (I can't hear identical vocal patterns spanning records and enjoy myself) and some of the music was simply boring and thin.
I hope this "wind of change" blows some good songs into Jon's heart.
Oh, I read acouple posts that basically said Jon's an ass for firing Tim...lol why? It's Jon's band and frankly he can do whatever he wants with it - people don't tell you you're an ass for painting your car a new color do they? Just as well we don't know whether Tim has bitter feelings about the whole thing yet so please - back it down fanboys. Tim will find work elsewhere for sure.

Matt and Tim are both good singers and I like both IE versions, Matt coming back is good news and bad as I like them both vocally, but rumour abounds that Tim is also rejoining Wintersbane to record Heart of a killer 2 in 2008, I for one am looking forward to both new releases in 2008 by these singers.

The best news I've heard since the Carcass and At The Gates reunions. Tim is an excellent singer, there's no doubt, but Matt was Iced Earth. I'm stoked for this. And for those who say this proves that Jon's an ass to work for, I can see where you're coming from. But the fact is, the fans wanted this. It's a business move, nothing else. I can't wait to hear new material with Matt!

The first and only time I've seen Iced Earth was when they supported Heaven & Hell in Cardiff some weeks back. Although they only played for 30 minutes, it was one of the best and most powerful performances I've ever seen.
As pleased as I am for the return of Matt Barlow, I'll miss Tim. I think Matt might struggle with some of the songs Tim sung in his time with the band, and (this sounds weird) Matt has some big shoes to fill on his return.

So first after lying totally about why he quit Iced Earth, all of you welcomes him back? And Jon takes him back into the band? Laughable.
Feel sorry for Tim Owens who is among the best fucking vocalists out there at the moment, and when he was getting warm in his clothes (performance on "Framing"-album) he gets the kick?
Iced Earth are one of my fave bands, but I don't know if this is good or bad news. I guess the next IE-album will tell. To Tim Owens: man, I fuckin hope you'll continue with BEYOND FEAR.

This is huge news!! Never thought I would see this happen. I am one of those who much prefer Barlow and think he has one of the best voices ever in metal! But unlike many on the Barlow side I thought Tim did a pretty good job in IE too.
Now I did not care for the Ripper albums much but that was due to Jon's poor songwritting not Tim's singing.
Also, as some have mentioned, Jon did rip Barlow's on his way out the door and that really pissed me off. I lost a lot of respect for Jon after that because Matt is a class guy and to rip one of the best ever voices in metal is just ignorant.
Hopefully Jon has learned from all of this!

for Tim, Man it had to suck doin the sci fi cd's and the big productions. It's Metal and Tim is the best metal singer and front man out there. Iced Earth will go down hill, you watch. Tim got them the opening for Heaven and Hell, if the cd isn't selling, I would say its because it isn't liked.period. All go get Beyond Fear, they will be bigger then Iced Earth soon, and good luck Ripper

No disrespect to Matt whatsoever because I've been a fan of the band since '96, but in my opinion when Ripper joined the band Iced Earth got the huge kick in the ass vocally that it needed. The Ripper albums will ALWAYS be my favorites in the entire collection. I've seen people comparing this to the Black Sabbath situation with Dio and Ozzy and I completely agree. I could care less "who fits better" though, I'm all about the better singer. Dio and Ripper are infinitely more talented than Ozzy and Barlow. The reason most people bring up the "who fits better" thing is the fact that they were more used to the singer because that is the one the band started with. It has nothing to do with talent. I'm extremely disappointed in this move by Jon...
I'll still support the band, but it will be the same way I do with Sabbath. When they revisit "The Ripper Years" in a few years (which will happen - Schaeffer can't keep the same lineup to save his life) I'll be much happier.
This also ruins the "Something Wicked" concept. Huge step backward Jon. I hope the whiners who wouldn't give Ripper a chance are happy. *Rolls eyes*

Is anyone else sick of these fucking Iced Earth fanboys claiming that Barlow, 'the voice of metal', has blessed such an 'amateur' band like Pyramaze, joining before their prime?
He's given Pyramaze nothing but negative publicity by welcoming the Iced Earth fanbase, the most clinically retarded of all metal fans, to comment on the current situation.
I liked it when 99% of Iced Earth fans were blissfully unaware of Pyramaze's existence; at least then I wouldnt have to listen to the blatant ignorance and stupidity of so many.
I have a feeling that the new Pyramaze album, with Matt Barlow on vocals, will resemble: "im excited by this shit im taking because the water around it makes it almost look more bearable as it clogs my toilet."

I recall that they were even brothers in law for awhile (Jon married his sister I think); as far as whos better, i wont say, but as far as the crunch of Iced Earth, I always have liked Barlows tone and delivery and thought they fit like an iron glove, or whatever cliche you'd like to use..

Guys, first of all, Tim is one of my favourite singers, he has an amazing range and quite possibly the best reinforced falsetto screams a human can pull off. However, his musical approach just doesn't fit Iced Earth. Don't get me wrong, I loved Framing Armageddon and the Clouding is amazing, vocally, but Tim's voice lacks the bottom end Barlow has, the brutal gritty lows, even though Tim is most definitely better in terms of technique. Matt has far more passion in his singing, he puts emotions in. Tim had exactly the same problem in Judas Priest, while many songs written with his voice in mind sounded great, since they had a certain Mr Tipton abusing every single note of Tim's voice in every register and possible sound, and while he had the range and technique to sing all Halford songs, many old songs were delivered completely dry. No emotion. It was as if you took a robot with a strong American accent to sing them. Ok, Exciter for instance sounded great, but others sounded too raw. Same story with IE stuff, can you imagine Tim doing Dante's Inferno? It's just not his style of singing and Jon still has an undertone in the music he writes that requires that low, gutteral element and a more continuous (although shorter) high range.

but ozzy's time in sabbath is better than dio's time, or anything dio has done, or anything anyone has done for that matter.
dio is an amazing singer, to be sure, and heaven and hell and mob rules and dehumanizer are all great albums.
still, black sabbath, paranoid, master of reality, sabbath bloody sabbath, sabotage. probably the best 6 consecutive albums anybody has ever released.

great news! although i love ripper and he was great on the two priest discs he sang on , the news that he was replacing matt in IE just left a pit in my stomach. still gave them a chance, tho but couldnt stand it - it just wasn't iced earth to me anymore. comparing matt's version of the coming curse to tim's- there is just no comparison; the newer version flat out sux. i wish tim the best of luck. by the way, matt didnt work for homeland security, he was and possibly still is a delaware(i think) state trooper. he was even singing with the police band for a while, and you could find his picture on their website. i think one of the reasons he had to leave the 1st time was he needed a more steady job and couldnt count on jon to feed his family.
