DEVILDRIVER Frontman: 'Don't Blame Metal' - Dec. 16, 2007
Ricardo Baca and Allison Sherry of The Denver Post report: Heavy-metal musicians are accustomed to being scapegoats after tragedies like the shootings in Arvada and Colorado Springs.

But while musicians may be used to the blame, they don't own it.

"Don't blame metal," said DEVILDRIVER frontman Dez Fafara, standing in his tour bus in the back parking lot of the Fillmore Auditorium on Wednesday night. "We're all out here trying to give the kids some hope."

Talking before his death-metal band's show, opening for like-minded rock outfits LAMB OF GOD and KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, Fafara — a father of three boys back home in Santa Barbara, Calif. — was clearly concerned about the shootings that left five people, including gunman Matthew Murray, dead. He sent his condolences to all of the families involved, including Murray's.

"But before laying the blame anywhere outside the home, you have to look inside the home," Fafara said. "Something touched that kid that was not right. And it had to come from the household."

Fafara said he monitors his kids' music and gaming intake, forbidding bands and video games that are overly violent or degrading to women.

Not into Devildriver really, but Dez is 100% correct. I could not agree more. Upbringing and other factors contribute to acts of violence. Its absurd to blame music and entertainment. Kids should be able to discern right and wrong at a fairly young age. Most people understand what is ethical and what isn't ethical. People don't listen to lyrics and then kill people. Something had to happen. Mental illness, upbringing, etc.

People need to stop blaming stupid crap and figure out that something was wrong with the kid, not video games or music or anything else

Thts right blame metal. Now, lets add up the number of people killed for Jesus, Allah, Muhammad, etc. And now how many people have been killed in the name of Ozzy or Judas Preist. Seems pretty disproportionate. BTW, I don't really blame metal.

And let's see...
Recent church shooting was KMFDM's fault
Columbine was Manson's fault.
Finland shooting was also (!) KMFDM's fault.
The media even had Oldboy blamed for the Virginia Tech massacre. Someone should tell them that that's not a band.

There's always some mysterious hidden cause to every shooting. It never seems to be that the shooter was just plain nuts, because where's the story in that? It's just insulting to one's intelligence how these things get reported.

When I'm super pissed and I want to take out a gun and shoot up a shopping mall or something, I listen to something super heavy, and get out my aggression. Not the other way around. If it were'nt for metal I'd be on death row for mass murder.

uh, i guess shootings only happen in the U.S.?

Scotland, March 1996: Gun enthusiast Thomas Hamilton shoots 16 children and their teacher dead at their primary school in Dunblane, Scotland before killing himself.

Yemen, March 1997: A man with an assault rifle attacked hundreds of pupils at two schools in Sanaa, Yemen, killing six children and two others. He was sentenced to death the next day.

Germany, November 1999: A 15-year-old student in Meissen, eastern Germany, stabbed his teacher to death after taking bets from classmates he would dare commit the crime.

He was later jailed for seven years.

Germany, March 2000: A 16-year-old pupil at a private boarding school in the Bavarian town of Branneburg, shot a 57-year-old teacher, who later died from injuries.

The teenager - who also shot himself - was facing expulsion from school after failing a cannabis test.

Germany, February 2002: A former pupil killed his headmaster and set off pipe bombs in the technical school he had recently been expelled from in Freising near Munich.

The man also shot dead his boss and a foreman at the company he worked for before turning the gun on himself. Another teacher was shot in the face, but survived.

Germany, April 2002: Seventeen people killed after a gunman - a former pupil - opens fire in a school in Erfurt, eastern Germany. He then turned the gun on himself.

Anyone who feels like they need to kill someone to get aggression out is a primate. I can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading here, to say "if it weren't for metal, i'd be in jail for mass murder" is almost as disturbing as someone blaming the music for their actions. MUSIC CAN'T MAKE OR PREVENT YOU FROM DOING ANYTHING!!!

I'm just glad I don't live in a country as mental as America, sure there are crazies everywhere but in my country we have a little thing called "gun control"
