Legendary Heavy Metal Record Store SLIPPED DISC RECORDS To Close
- Dec. 29, 2007
|
|
Legendary independent record store Slipped Disc Records of Valley Stream, New York has reportedly lost its lease and is doing a store-wide liquidation. Slipped Disc Records has been the top independent record store for heavy metal, hardcore, rock and alternative music in the New York area since 1982. The store was featured in the documentary "Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal" and "Headbanger's Ball". The makers of "Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal" last year posted a gallery of Slipped Disc Records "in-store" archives, featuring photos of such artists as MEGADETH, SLAYER, EXODUS and DEATH ANGEL holding signing sessions at the record store. Check it out at this location. Watch an eight-minute documentary on Slipped Disc: (Thanks: Charles Florio)

One of the last dying gasps of the industry. By the end of 2008, almost all music will be purchased online, and to obtain a CD you will need to visit Ebay or online stores.
The only exceptions might be for gospel, country music and Latino music - you will probably still be able to purchase those at Wal-Mart. Hip hop and rap will still be available. Rock? Heavy Metal? Classical? Get your ass online.

Damn, this is worse thanhaving one of your favorite bands break up. Slipped Disc has truly been a legendary place for Metal in North America, just like Aces was in Tampa back in the early 90s. It was the place where I first started mail ordering from when I was like 14. I got so much vinyl and shirts and all kinds of stuff from that place over the years. I was lucky enough to visit the place twice in person also, back in 90 and in 91. I remember buying Sacrifice "Soldiers of Misfortune" (the Fringe version) and Boltthrower "Cenotaph" EP in person there, but a huge percentage of my Metal was purchased there via mailorder.
The story says they losttheir lease, could this mean, they may open up again in a different location? I sure hope so....

Yay for Napster, Winmx and now torrents.

I just feel that some how, some way they will relocate the store. The business end is still there for Slipped Disc, it's just the lease has been raised to an ungodly amount. It has nothing to due with the store's sales. Please just move the store to another place. Your fanbase will move with you. Don't give up the fight. Please!!

I too am hopeful for a simple move of address, but the story mentions a "storewide liquidation" so that seems unlikely. Sigh. I have been hitting that place for over 20 years now, even in todays workaday world I get my wife and 4 year old down there quarterly, and get to leave with another 5 CDs or so. Its part of my routine. I loved the place.
I'll be there tomorrow, that is for certain. This is sad, but I remember hearing rumblings of this over 3 years ago, and I always wondered how they stayed afloat on that high-priced slice of Rockaway Parkway in Valley Stream. I'll miss it.

These mom and pop stores are such a really cool and special place for music fans. You just don't get the same experience in chain stores.
We hardly have any even close to where I am. Very sad. I agree with ghostofnavigator... kids won't get to know how cool places like this were.

it is a damn shame seeing these little mom and pop record stores close. To this day I refuse adamently to buy music from the likes of chain stores like Virgin Records, FYE or Best Buy and use online or these independant stores only.
Now online of course provides the widest possible selection but it can't replace the feeling of going into a small record store and scouring the shelves with a few friends before heading to a show. Hell any trip to NYC for a show also includes a visit to places like Bleeker Bobs, Hospital Records and of course Generation Records. Vintage Vinyl down in NJ is worth its own trip too quite often.
A good friend of mine owns his own record store (Rock Fantasy in Middletown, NY) so I could go on for hours about how younger kids these days are brazenly ignorant to this entire debate and the joy of going to independant record stores and simply don't comprehend the issue beyond "go online, download, put on ipod, done". Then again the area where I live seems to be polluted with primarily slanted hair emo fools and the equally noxious army cap hardcore kids and neither demographic has ever been shown to exhibit the slightest sign of intelligent behavior. The small stores I go to in NYC always seem to have a better group of people in them

I remember buying 2 Destruction albums from them along with the Helloween EP through mail order...and they threw in some stickers and pins as a thanks. When I saw that Death sticker I was the happiest 14 year old in the world. After that, all my albums were purchased from them for about 3 years straight (until I moved to NY and could go in person).
Thanks for the memories.

I agree. I am only 19 years old and live in an extremely small town, but make my half hour trip into downtown every chance i get to visit the only metal store around here for miles and miles. I get my shirts, cds, bullet belts, ANYTHING there really. It's a shame these stores are going out of buisness.
The internet is the widest music shop on the planet, but like other people say, it doesn't even compare to physically walking in a metal store and knowing you are among friends :)

Apple Emporium was THE place and it was just like Slipped Disc. My friends and I would make the monthly trip there for our dose of REAL metal. From finding used tapes back in the day to CD's and other merch, nothing could beat it. With the smell of Gonesh #8 incense constantly burning and other metalheads in the store, conversation and the feeling was everything. The mall chain stores just don't have the feel or the selection of the independent little metal stores. Apple Emporium shut down before the downloading revolution due to the dying metal music scene in the surrounding areas and was started up again but the feeling just wasn't he same.
Now you go into a FYE and ask the 20year old clerk for Bolt Thrower and they ask if that was an Anime cartoon! I'm sorry, this is why I have to buy from the bands themselves or direct from the record companies. Three bins of bubble gum metal music that no one wants and the rest of the store is rap!!???....no thanks!

Sucks for both them and metal fans, though seeing this as an indication that music is going to be mostly online is silly. Stupid, even. There are people who trade tapes and collect vinyl! CD's aren't going anywhere in the next 10 years. While the amount of music being exchanged/sold online will increase, the majority will always want something they can put their hands on, not just file transfer.

It's sad to read about a store like that packing it in. It's pretty obvious that the owner wants to retire from the business, or he would just move the store to a new location. Lucky for me I have two mom & pop shops near me. Both of which have been around fro quite some time, and niether are nearing the end anytime soon.
I do laugh at those of you who blame downloaders for this, though. THe guy said in the video clip that downloading really didn't effect him much at all, as his store was more for the music collector. THe main reason for mom& pop shops closing their doors, has more to do with higher rent and places like Best Buyi mplementing loss leader priceing. The mom & pop shops can't compete with the lower prices, and it takes a cleaver nich to stay alive and draw consumers. Slipped Disc obviously had that nich market, but they choose not to continue on elsewhere. It is a terrible loss for the music collectors in the N.Y.C. area for sure.
I do have to agree that kids today seem to be missing out on the record shop experience. Really, they have been missing out ever since CDs took over. There wa something a lot more special about thumbing through shelves of vinyl albums. THe record store was truey a great place to hang out back-in-the-day.

All of the major labels just finished laying off a lot of people just before Christmas. Sales were down miserably this whole quarter. The companies are taking a cut of the artists' touring and merchandising profits just to stay afloat. There might not BE Cd's for the majority to put their hands on. If you must have a CD, it might just have to be second-hand burned from the online music you bought.
Silly? Stupid even? I don't think so.

...With most stores, they can not figure out way metal fans actually listen to. And what artist are the ones that get first day purcahses, something that is earned with songwriting and having a recognizable sound over the superflous contender bands, those who play to close to genre rules.
My local store also has tons of stuff that is rock, metal, alternative, and hardcore. Even If I have to flip through stacks of rock music, I still can always get the newest CD's by labels such as Drakkar Productions, End All Life, and Osmose Productions. And I live in the most alternative rock/ numetal part of the world probably. I think my local radio station coined the term NEW ROCK ALTERNATIVE.
Usually record stores with to much stock only have a tendency to like the superflous artist instead of bands that are Molten Metal.
Also honestly one record store claims it has over 50,000 titles and over 80% of those bands there have no advertising anywhere, so I have to skip over them, because I do not know who they are. And the store across town from there probably has 5 or 6 times the amount of the other store. Big fun flipping through the stacks of the section of bands starting with the letter T, takes about 15 minutes, and again bunch of bands I never read about in Voices from the Darkside, Ill-literature, Kick Ass Monthly, Sounds of Death, or Snakepit.
I never had to use Slipped Disc records that often, I went through a Mail order specialist called Wild Rags...Everyone slags that dude Richard Campos, but I always sent him a envelope stuffed with cash and a huge wantlist, and he always came through for me. With proper reciepts, and if I had money left over, I could get that returned or recieve a credit slip that was always accepted.
As far as Slipped Disc getting put out of business, at one point, Sentinel Steel had a huge print catalouge/ webzine...and I got alot of tons awesome thrash metal from Sentinel Steel, because they cater more to the Melodic metal crowd.

Those who buy demo's, 7 inch and LP's and CD's are the actual metal fans, and those who download, really are not life long metal fans. And who cares what they do, one day they will just reformat there collection off the computers, when they find a genre, they actually can support fully emotionally and finacially.
Labels will never go away, because they are like banks for the poor soul/ low wager earner starving artist types. Distrobution networks will never go away, because the labels would rather just be A & R represenatives, and do advertising campaigns all- day.
I never seen downloading as a threat to the world best artist, because there are artist (CD's/Merch/DVD's/ Concerts)...I am willing to work 7 days a week to obtain, those bands that are really trusted and respected.

Record Time's closing their Ferndale location next weekend. Not exactly a metal bastion, but still...at least their Roseville location's still going strong. ********************************************** Record time if Ferndale only could of survived if it was totally indie-rock with a anti-metal attitude. Not really sure why anyone would but a Rock/metal store, in such as lilly white place as that.
The Roseville location makes more sense, at least in that area there are alot of Construction/ factory/ blue collar workers...and not the indie rockers and college rockers like in Ferndale and Royal Oak.
Ferndale could not make it on New Wave, punk rock and indie rock, and soft rock alone, ha..., they were in the right location for that demographic. They must of had alot of metal, to make that demographic shop elsewhere.
I have not been to record time in years, my local store Dearborn Music, always has the best extreme metal/ gothic metal releases, WAY before the distros and local competitors.
Dearborn music beats local Rock of Ages by 10-13 days on most major extreme metal releases. But to Rock of Ages credit, they carry alot of imports of alot of my favorite artist.

NWOBHM circa 1979/1980 Power Metal with Tank, Raven, Thrash with starting with Discharge/ Exploited/ Metallica in 1982 Death metal since 1985 Black metal since 1984 Florida death metal since 1987 Swedish death metal since Entomed/ Dismember/ Unleashed + ... First wave of orthodox black metal, circa 1991 Symphonic black metal , circa 1990-1994 Norway still has a excellent advant-garde movement still strong there.
God dam if any band does a album Post Disiplin "Anti Life" or post Abigor "Fractal Possession"...please let us know.
Honestly I do not see any bands getting heavier that the likes of The Berzerker.
If you see metal evolving faster, heavier and better riffs that that lets us know...

Haven't been to Rock of Ages in YEARS.....last time I was there some assholes flattened my tire(they were protesting them selling Skrewdriver CDs and I just happened to be shopping there). My girlfriend and I came out and they were standing around my car. They ran back to the street to picket and my tire was slashed. And all I bought was Megadeth's Hidden Treasures and The Best of Testament on CD(shows how long ago this was).

Stores only fuck themselves out of business because they carry tons of crap, that metallers do not enjoy, and alot of trends that the corporate mallcore kids betrayed years earlier.
Basically it seems that a store should either totally corporate rock / mall-core or just straight up heavy metal. I am lucky I live in a total alternative rock/ mall core area, and I still can get tons of those earache, Osmose, The End ,and Napalm Records titles on the first street date.

Yeah yeah, boo fucking hoo. Another one bites the dust.Get over it -move on. The traditional small traders days are over. It's not just the music shops, its most of everything: tradtional butcher's, bakers, bookshops-most "speciality stores" in general. We the consumer created the commercial monster- so we now have to deal with it. Simple fact is, the industry as it stands in its present form is totally fucked, and the only way to shop for your music CD's LPs or whatever these days is online. Its called evolution. It's called survival of the fittest. Brutal but true.

What a thing of beauty to see so many comments about Slipped Disc. It's the only thing that keeps L.I. metal. As far as I know, the lease runs out in late March. I think the 21st, not a 100% sure. So at least they have a bit of time on their side. I'm 25 and been going there since 1994. It's the only place that solves my metal needs. By far the best place to get new metal releases from on their street date. No one comes close to Mike and his staff's effort. If the lease does run out, Mike won't go out like that. He will relocate the store and carry on. We also need some big name metal bands to get off their asses and do some "in-stores" for Slipped Disc. Show the store some love and support.

posted by : Neil Young's Cocaine Booger 12/29/2007 4:46:13 PM Record Time in Roseville is where I do most of my CD purchasing(that and Rock-a-Billy's in Utica).Haven't been to Rock of Ages in YEARS.....last time I was there some assholes flattened my tire(they were protesting them selling Skrewdriver CDs and I just happened to be shopping there). My girlfriend and I came out and they were standing around my car.And all I bought was Megadeth's Hidden Treasures and The Best of Testament on CD(shows how long ago this was). ************************************************** Ha yeah that store carried alot of Resistance Record titles and other skinhead music...Some one bought ALOT of those CD's,. That Skinhead section is almost whipped out. They never repelenised that section though. It is funny where the Skinhead Z's section ends, The Rap compilation section starts...
Nowadays Rock Of Ages is on this big campaign, to get rid of it remaining CD's from the Important Distroubtion/ (before they became RED Distro)...stuffs from say 1988-1995, he wants to make way for todays heavier hitters in extreme metal, so if you specialize in metal before circa 1994, get down there, or look for that stuff on line.
I remember that protest...I am sure there was more that one, the section that used to be the Skinhead section is now The Gothic/ industrial rock section. and the old section band's L-Z is strictly rap, and the old back room is Sepultura to section Z, with a wall with tons of DVD's.
I usually spend my Income tax checks there evey year, because while they are no blackmetal.com type of mail order distro. I still can snag tons of metal from the golden era's of authentic heavy metal.
Tuesdays are still new release days for Rock of Ages, and Dearborn Music. But Dearborn has always been faster with the heavier metal.
On this side of town MUSIC MUSIC (the old delete bin shop) went under. And the Record Exchange, is now a tatto parlor. Music Music sold its collectors section items and was left with the delete bin items. And Record Exchange,...It was like walking into a Record time Records time-warp, circa 1986, when they were on 10 mile road. Not so cool circa 2001.

IT SUCKS THAT SO MANY KIDS ARE CONTENT TO HAVE SOMETHING ONLY ON MP3. I HAVE AN IPOD, BUT I WOULD RATHER HAVE THE ACTUAL CD AND LOAD IT TO THE IPOD. IT FEELS INCOMPLETE WITHOUT THE ARTWORK, CREDITS, PHOTOS, LYRICS, ETC. METAL HAS BEEN INFLUENCED MORE BY ARTWORK THAN ANY OTHER GENRE. WE'VE ALL EXPLORED A NEW BAND AT SOME POINT BECAUSE THE COVER CAUGHT OUR ATTENTION. CAN YOU IMAGINE IRON MAIDEN WITHOUT EDDIE? TWISTED SISTER WITH NO BAND PHOTOS? HELL NO! METAL IS VERY VISUAL MUSIC. KING DIAMOND'S APPEARANCE ENHANCES THE EVIL OF THE MUSIC. HAIR BANDS HAD WOMEN DROOLING OVER THEM. CHARACTERS LIKE THE "NOT MAN" AND VIC RATTLEHEAD BECAME SYNONYMOUS WITH THEIR RESPECTIVE BANDS. ALICE COOPER'S IMPORTANCE OF SIGHT WAS AS MUCH AS SOUND. KISS PISSED OFF PARENTS BY THEIR VISUALS AND THUS STRENGTHENED THE LOYALTY OF THOSE SAME PARENTS' KIDS. METAL HISTORY WOULD NOT HAVE GONE DOWN THE SAME IF WE HAD TODAY'S TECHNOLOGY BACK THEN, IF IT WOULD'VE SURVIVED AT ALL. WHAT BANDS WOULD'VE GIVEN UP BEFORE THEIR PRIME BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES DUE TO FILE SHARING AND POOR RECORD SALES? HOW MANY COULD-BE LEGENDARY BANDS WILL WE LOSE FOR THE SAME REASON? I GUESS WE'LL NEVER KNOW, BUT I'M SURE A LOT WILL HAVE TO THROW IN THE TOWEL BEFORE THEY WOULD HAVE 20 YEARS AGO. UNFORTUNATELY, IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT'S GOING TO GET ANY BETTER. RECORD STORES WILL BE FEWER AND FEWER, AND CDS WILL BE THE 8 TRACK OF THE NEXT GENERATION

I bought just about every CD and shirt I own at Slipped Disc, if it weren't for that place I may not be as into metal as I am. I remember picking up Master of Puppets when I was like 10 years old.

I get my shirts, cds, bullet belts, ANYTHING there really. It's a shame these stores are going out of buisness. "

Man, this sucks. I spent so much time in that store, rooting through piles of cd's (and vinyl, back in the day).
Like so many others on this post - a way of life is fast disappearing (and is already gone). I will probably head there tomorrow and see what's left.
I remember talking to Mike the last time I was there and he said the exact same thing - it was the metalheads that have kept what's left of this business afloat for the last few years. They love the music, collecting cd's, etc and have way more passion for it than the average pop fan.
Bottom line - music is much more of a way of life to us. Which is why it annoys me so much when people insult each other over trivial nonsense on Blabbermouth. In a sense, the days after Dimebag's death were the best, beacuse there was a lot of unity and all the petty BS temporarily ceased.
Neil Young's Cocaine Booger...yes, Looney Tunes re-opened in Babylon. I was there yesterday, got Motorhead's recent live album.

I once dropped 100 bucks in there on Blind Guardian "Imaginations", a Priest Tribute, Saxon "Rock the Nations" Thin Lizzy "Thunder and Lightning", a venom CD and a ton of other shit. I LOVED slipped disc and the Chicken Gyro place across the street. My fiancee is from Valley Stream and I used to hit that place up all the time when her and I started dating. This sucks as bad as when Halford left Priest. Another beautiful NY landmark in all it's wood paneled glory going to shit. Probably gonna be another fucking nail salon. FUCK !!!!! I guess nothing gold can stay, ponyboy.

From a real estate point of view, this doesnt make any sense at all. I walked the entire length of the Rockaway ave. business district, and I counted at least 20 empty stores,so I have no idea what the landlord thinks he is going to accomplish by being such a greedy prick..(I know the amount they want to raise the rent, and it's absurd)

I'm looking at my music collection and it's fair to say half of ti comes directly from Slipped Disc. I live very close and used to work down the block, so Slipped Disc used to be a second home for me.
Alays a reliable place to get music, guranteed to habve what you were looking for.
I've heard things that they may open a vinyl store somewhere (their sign inside said they are actively buying mint vinyl records), and I think this could work given the right labels they carry and a good location. Vinyl is turning into the music nerd's haven (just check vinylcollective.com), and if they carry the right type of music and record labels, this could be a very cool thing.
Again, great to see this response. When I saw this story hit blabbermouth, I thought maybe 5-10 comments. This rules. Going there tomorrow...again.

COMMENT | posted by : prince bumbo 12/29/2007 8:40:17 PM ************************************************** Not really Prince bumbo...If Phillips was going to Usurp the CD , the would of did it during the era when Music For Nations/ Zomba, Combat/ Important and Restless Records Manufactures and Markeeters were around. As to have the same product code and intellectual property rights, infos. CD's were like 4th Pressing of some items. Cassette, Vinyl, Picture Disc...then resold the 4th pressing on CD as the 1st Pressing CD.
What ever comes after CD...I am saying no to that. Because it took alot of work to swap out demos and LP's and cassettes, to CD, circa 1980- 1993..I waited too long to switch to CD in 1997 For example. I had Razor's "Evil Invader's" on Viper Records Cassette, and it took alot of time to find the "Evil Invaders" on RoadraceR/ SPV CD in the Pricekiller Series.

It's always bad news to hear of a record store closing. Even one I've never heard of before. Or at least one through little more than word of mouth anyway.
Neil Young's Cocaine Booger: "last time I was there some assholes flattened my tire(they were protesting them selling Skrewdriver CDs and I just happened to be shopping there). My girlfriend and I came out and they were standing around my car. They ran back to the street to picket and my tire was slashed. And all I bought was Megadeth's Hidden Treasures and The Best of Testament on CD".....yikes....while Skrewdriver are really the British Limp Bizkit in all but name that's still pretty fucking lame on the picketers' part.

children please, when you like a band, please fucking buy at least one record, the bands need it to survive. I know it's "only" art but fuck, it's hard and the pour a lifetime into it, the deserve and you need to show respect....but i do agree that some overpricing of music is a call to fucking rip them off, fuck record labels and support the real underground shit, every time i see someone supporting the music destroying metal and underground i realize why everyone on earth is fucked anyways

15-years-ago when I really started getting into metal I would spend hundreds there every month on the latest import (B. Guardian, Rage, G. Ray, etc) I would scour the huge used cd section for hours (found HELSTAR 'Nosferatu" for $3!!), check out the t-shirts, posters etc. One day I ran into Mike Portnoy there and talked about the weirdest shit...from Mikkey Dee to Reservoir Dogs. That kind of experience is lost today.
Once life got busy I bought everything online (The End, Sentinel Steel). I download more than I should now (I will pay for high bitrate albums). I don't cherish my 2,000 cd-wall like I used to.
Still...nothing like sitting down with the new Iron Maiden or King Diamond album artwork and listening line by line. Slipped Disc nurtured that. I hope they survive. Good luck Mike!
