MEGADETH: New Guitarist Rumors Heat Up - Jan. 7, 2008
MEGADETH is rumored to have tapped Chris Broderick (NEVERMORE, JAG PANZER) as the replacement for lead guitarist Glen Drover.

Although MEGADETH has yet to confirm Glen's departure via its official web site, numerous postings on various message boards (including MEGADETH's official forum, where such messages are regularly deleted) have suggested that Drover has left the band in order to focus on family life.

Chris has been playing guitar since he was eleven years old and has been teaching for the last 15 years. Styles range from classical, rock, blues, and jazz. He started taking lessons at 14 years of age studying guitar as well as voice, violin, and piano. Chris has a degree in classical guitar music performance at the University of Denver and the Lamont School of Music. He has performed in many master classes including ones given by David Russell, Benjamin Verdery, and his primary instructor, Ricardo Iznaola. In addition, Chris has taken classes such as jazz improvisation, chord voicing, advanced music theory, and sight-reading.

Watch Broderick's "five-octave arpeggio" video clip that was done for Guitar World's "Betcha Can't Play This" DVD:

I'm amazed Mustaine managed to keep the Broderick thing hush-hush for as long as he did. This went down weeks ago.

As for "he could probably play circles around Dave at this point." LOL WTF?! Mustaine could live 10 lifetimes and he still wouldn't be able to touch Chris on a technical level.

The difference between Broderick and Mustaine as about as same as it is between Allan Holdsworth and CC DeVille. They're nowhere near in the same universe.

But Dave is an awesome songwriter while Broderick has never written anything of note, not even in Jag Panzer.

i have to stop this rumour here. chris is actually in nevermore atm, replacing steve smyth. how is it possible he is also going to be touring with megadeth as their replacement guitarist?

its simply not possible, on a logistics and even a "learn these songs asap" level. nevermore alone is hard enough, let alone adding megadeth to the list of things to learn..

i personally dont think the drover has left, in fact i dare say this is just bs.

simply cannot be true as mustaine would not hire a guy that wears his guitar above his balls! how metal is that?!??!!!?
songwriting is 99x more important than the shred. looks like mr mustaine found his hired shred boy.

All things aside, this guy rips in the neoclasical style. Apparantly, good right hand as well. Essential in a "thrash" band.

Apologies to anyone that I may have missed.

That's great that this guy has a lovely education in guitar and is a teacher and can play fancy notes fast and nice BUT what does that have to do with playing in a metal band called MEGADETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Master class? Teaching? Violin?
Whatever happened to "thrashed the shitty bar circuit, banged my head, put fists through walls, drank up the bar". Now it is "plays piano, has a degree in theory, hammers on, taps, arpeggios, scales, speed, technique"!!!! I WANT METAL.

Trendkil - Chris is not in Nevermore. He is a live session guitarist.

I have mixed feelings about this rumor. If it IS true, then great for Chris. His career will explode and he will get the recognition he deserves. While this is true, I doubt he'll have any creative freedom. His talent won't be used... then again, it could be used as a gateway for stupid Megadeth fans to listen to Jag Panzer and Nevermore, upping the popularity of both bands (even though, as I stated before, Chris is not IN Nevermore).

Chris won't have a problem perfecting Megadeth songs. He mastered MANY Nevermore songs with hardly any problems... in the timespan of what? Less than a week?

This would make Dave step up his game... and probably replace Chris with Steve Smyth.

How? Broderick would be a hired hand playing the old solos of more than a half dozen others before. How does this step up Daves game?? Drover was fitting in well with this band and it is a shame he is gone but Dave should make sure he has the right guy. A big move. A great move or a great mistake. Either way, I will still check them out.

This sounds like something you would read in a local city newspaper's want ads:

"Chris has been playing guitar since he was eleven years old and has been teaching for the last 15 years. Styles range from classical, rock, blues, and jazz. All speculation aside, I hope what's best for Chris happens. I saw him with Nevermore - he looked at his guitar MAYBE three times, and twice were to tune - and met him afterwards. One of the coolest guys around and certainly one of the most lethal players. He sure deserves a shot at something big like this.

Now if this is true, and I didn't think I could say this ever again, but Megadeth's lineup just might have improved to impossible levels.

We're going to miss you, Glen. You were absolutely spellbinding and a serious asset to the Megadeth legacy and catalog. In true Megadeth fashion, you're shoes won't be easy to fill.

...I'm totally agree with Mr. "TruthIsParamount", when he's saying that Broderick for MEGADETH is probably better than Drover and Lomenzo is better than Ellefson...for sure! Probably Mustaine started to keep an eye on Chris' guitar talent since the last GIGANTOUR with Nevermore and now he needs quickly a new live guitar player for the upcomin' tour (...the same story happened between Marty Friedman and Al Pitrelli some years ago!) ...by the way I'd like to see both THE JARZOMBEK BROTHERS instead of THE DROVERS for the next Megadeth album 'cause they belong to the same HM generation of Mustaine and Ron in one of the most underrated guitar player in USA and also he could write some good riffs (...see Watchtower)!
It is funny the guy who mentioned BUCKETHEAD: he's a weird phenomenon but who really needs him as guitar player is Ozzy instead of Zakk Wylde maybe with KEVIN HEYBOURNE (...missing!) as well writing some good new songs again.....

...bah, forgive me but I didn't know that Broderick wasn't with NEVERMORE during the Gigantour, by the way he is a notable guitar player part of the new generation as Bill Hodson of Cellador or also Glenn Drover in Eidolon who are pure HM guitarist. From the other side Chris Poland (...about 50 years old) is far away from the Heavy Metal scene playing fantastic jazz/rock fusion music with his long-time mate phenomenal freetless bass player Roby Pagliari (see NewYorkers with Stu' & Gar Samuelson - rip) and Kofi Baker (Ginger's son) at drums... Poland is into F. Gambale, A. Holdsworth, maybe M. Landau... ec. I mean jazz guitar players: the top and, please, let me think that "Ollie" Peter Halsall (rip) has been probably the best guitar player never existed on this planet and that the right for Megadeth for the future could be only Ron Jarzombek... but if Drover will stay home!!

come on man Dave writes the songs in Megadeth it might as well be Iced Earth on that level. The dude will come and jam some solos and pieces but will probably not have a lot of input on the song writing process. To those who question his metal abilities go listen to fucking Jag Panzer please or catch a bootleg with him playing with Nevermore. The dude has lived and breathed metal for years and years. So what he has gone to school and become a professional musician so have a lot of other musicians you know. The little paragraph about him is his resume and was something Blabbermouth found to post about him. It is not like he sent this article in advertising himself. You people sure are shallow sometimes. The guy also gives lessons and used to give them through the internet (not sure if he still does). So that information about himself was probably from that. It is sad that so many people are bashing this dude for being educated. Maybe if those who said that were educated you would have better things to do than bash people based on their experience.

I guess Broderick is fun to watch just like that Michael Angelo guy with the mullet and quad guitars... Despite being technically proficient, his playin is lacking. Jag Panzer is a joke and he should leave Nevermore to Jeff Loomis. Loomis writes good songs, and Broderick does not. That said, he would be perfect for Megadeth. As long as Dave doesn't listen to any of his shitty ideas, he would be the perfect tool for the job. That isnt that bad huh? At the end of the day, however, you're still a tool.

The William Tell overture was probably the first thrash tune ever written - in 1829. And it was played on the violin. Knowledge of classical music, although not required, greatly enhances the ability of metal musicians.

"in my opinion, sounds quite a bit like Jeff Loomis"

That's hard to argue with but Loomis has little quirks to his soloing such as bending notes in certain places which makes him unmistakable. I think Broderick is maybe a bit more well rounded with regard to different styles though.

They made a great pair. I fortunately saw them live in Melbourne. It'll be great to hear Broderick belt out some old 'Deth tunes if the rumors are true.
