METALLICA Drummer Says New Album Is Not As 'One-Dimensional' As 'St. Anger'
- Jan. 8, 2008
|
|
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently spoke to Revolver magazine about the band's much-anticipated new album, tentatively due in the spring via Warner Bros. Records. "This stuff is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," he said. "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes. It's pretty different from 'St. Anger', and it's pretty different from the 'Load' stuff. This stuff is not the one-dimensional punch in the face that 'St. Anger' was. This is probably a little more like those couple of albums back there in the decade that begins with an '8.'" When asked if the material represents a return to the "old school," Lars replied, "I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, 'What the fuck? Lars lied to us!' But it feels that way to me. It's been no secret that Rick [ Rubin, producer] suggested to us that we use a couple of those records as reference points — that we spend some time kind of accessing that headspace. So when we would come to forks in the road, sometimes the exercise became, 'What would we have done at this point in 1985?'" For more of Revolver's conversation with Lars Ulrich, pick up the February 2008 issue of the magazine, available on newsstands now. More information is available at www.revolvermag.com.

I agree with Suicidalmuthafka on this one, but I have been drinking Metallica's cool-aid since 88' so I've been expecting a great record for about 18 years or so........

In 1985, it was "lean on Cliff Burton to make this stuff really kick ass." You guys got a crystal ball or something to help you with that now?

Notice that he didnt say its "completely different" or just "different" then...
Ofcourse I hope that I'm wrong but I'm guessing this new album is gonna be a radio friendly hard rock album...aka load part 3.
But Lars I'm sure Robotact666 is stoked tho...

I would really like to see Metallica and Testament put out albums this year that show the kids around my age how its really done!!! I hope Metallica doesn't dissappoint, but then again there are so many other good bands out there that have contributed just as much to Metal that I don't hold Metallica on a pedastool or pay too much attention to them. I'd rather hear some Judas Priest, Testament, Hammerfall or Therion!

The only good thing Metallica have done for themselves in the last 18 years is lower the bar so low, that some worn out old uneducated bums can still make a buck, no matter what sort of garbage album they release.
Maybe that should be the new title... Garbage Inc.

Cannot wait for this. Sure metallica has had its highs and lows but I definitely look forward to this mainly due to producer change. Now I ain't blaming bob rock for anything, he's a great producer and all, but hey rick rubin has a history of great production, don't see why this record just might be Metallica's BIG RETURN!!! Almost every band has a bad record or phase and comes back with a bang. Why not one of metals greatest bands?

Every song you've ever written has been in the same key of Em. There is a wah pedal on every song to mask sharp bends and general lack of feel, color, and technique on the guitar. The lyrics are borderline adolescent. Your basing your sales on the same forklift driving, credit hazard demographic that's been in the same apartment since the black album. This whole thing is a farce and makes me wish I was born 50 years in the future where the media landscape isn't saturated with this band. This is the greatest hoax that the music industry has ever profitted from. Absolute crap from day 1.

This sums it up very clearly...
If the only way to put out a half decent record is to try to clone what you did 20+ years ago, this means you probably should have retired back then, when you had something called integrity, reputation, originality... It seems incredible that this is the same band that played those 4 records...

Heh, Metallica were the band that got me into metal, when I heard '...And Justice For All'. I loved all the albums before it, and hell, it's not cool to say it, but I loved the Black Album. But Load and all that came after it was pretty appalling.
Yet, everytime they release a record, I have a small nugget of hope that maybe, just maybe, it'll be a return to glory. Maybe Lars' drums won't sound like a kid hitting a dustbin with a broom. Maybe Kirk will lay off the wah pedal for a minute or two. Maybe James will stop crooning and inserting the word 'baby' into every song. Testament have proved that age is no impediment to putting out an awesome album, so....we can hope!!

If they succeed in making a album that is in the same league as Master or Kill em All or Ride . . . It will be THE GREATEST come back in the history of METAL Maybe in the history of rock n roll even I dont think they or the label even realize that it would SELL millions The only other band that could come close would be if Axl came back to planet Earth and GNR produced an actual ROCK/METAL album like Appetite.

Mustaine did nothing to metallica as james and lars were the main composers. you guys don't get that people are playing music to make a living, there ain't no art, "troo", whatever shit.
Everyone is there for the money, and as you've noticed, bands tend to play more maintsream music to get a larger fan base/ record sales.
If they'll stuck to "fvckin thrash", they'll end up ruined.
Slayer , metallica, testament, megadeth kept on putting out accessible albums to get a better living.
And BTW, the whole thrash scene is a way too over-rated.

You are kind of correct with your assessment that the album should be distributed online instead of in a CD form, in order to help protect the environment.
Normally, most CD's don't need this kind of treatment. But this CD is going to especially need to be in a download form because there will be thousands of them sitting in landfills all over the nation once people hear it.

I just hope Rick Rubin shows Lars how to switch the snare on for this album. Honestly, I'm really rooting for them on this album. The intensity was there for the St.Anger album but it wasn't directed in the right way (Bob Rock has never been involved in anything underground or cutting edge). Im hoping that they still have a classic album in them. And who knows, MAYBE Rob T might actually be able to bring the goods to the table. With a changed lineup and a different producer, they might pull something really great out of the bag.

The reason people hated St. Anger is because they weren't used to it, because it didnt sound like Metallica. I bet if it was a different band then everyone would enjoy it. Yes, it was very repetitive but it was good, it was different. that is why everyone is questioning this album. But its Metallica and you can't question them. Once a fan always a fan.

The new album will be another classic Metallica album, like St. Anger, Load, Reload, Black Album, Justice, Puppets, Lightning, and Kill 'Em All. Metallica rules!

That is all I have to say... :D

Except for South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss, which are commercial breakthrough albums (can be compared with the Black Album in a way), Slayer has always remained Slayer. Plus, they always released heavier albums since Divine Intervention. Their last album (Christ Illusion) is quite heavy, Araya's anger at its best.
Slayer's breakthrough albums helped them getting a new audience, actually people who wouldn't have cared about Slayer because they thought they were too heavy for them. Decade of Aggression was a good idea as well, because it exposed their old stuff to this new audience. They became the real Slayer again after this period.
Metallica's Black Album had a similar impact. However, instead of becoming Metallica again afterwards, they became a radio-friendly band, which has no sense when you're Metallica. Then, it all crumbled. They became another band somewhat. Quite frankly, I like most of the stuff they have done during that period. However, it's not really Metallica for me. I see the post 1991 era as some kind of side project. Fuel, Ain't my Bitch and Devil's Dance are good songs imo, but I can't believe Metallica wrote them when they used to write masterpieces like Master of Puppets or Call of Ktulu 10 years before.
St. Anger sounded awkward but those who watched the "Some Kind of Monster" movie will all agree that this period was pretty fuckin awkward anyway. They did the best they could with the low energy and motivation they had then. They attempted to record a heavy album, just like their fans wanted, but they fuckin failed big time. And those who blame Bob Rock for this are idiots. Bob Rock and Rick Rubin are some of the best producers of all time. Bob Rock couldn't make miracles.
Let's hope Rick Rubin can. I think it now or never for Metallica. If this album is a mess, they better call it a day.

Thanks god they finally confirmed they produced 1 dimensional album too !! before the confession, Saint Anger was the same great album as Master of puppets. ( In Lars's point of view of course) Let Dave Mustaine and Jason be in the band again, and hey will help you to be another powerful Metallica

Now that Dave Mustaine is alive and well, I think the timing is ok for such a project.
Most ego wars are over. Van Halen, the Police and Led Zep, among others, have reunited. Bury the hatchet, make money and please your fans damn it.
Life is short and all these rock/metal legends are growing old. It's now or never for god's sake
