KISS' PAUL STANLEY: 'I'm Not Ready To Hang It Up'
- Jan. 12, 2003
KISS guitarist/vocalist Paul Stanley recently addressed the band's decision to abandon their retirement plans in favor of further touring and a possible new studio album. Appearing live on the "Merry KISSmass Special" hosted by WNEW radio personality Eddie Trunk on Dec. 21, Stanley explained that the group's [2000] 'Farewell' tour "was done in the same way that [basketball player] Michael Jordan retired, and [boxer] Sugar Ray Leonard retired… You reach a point where you think that, for whatever reason, you've done everything you want to, or need to, and you say goodbye. It's true for that time, [but] it may not turn out to be true later.
"The problem with being in the public eye — and the blessing of being in the public eye — is, anything you say is supposed to be true forever, and we all know that people change, how you feel changes, and what you wanna do with your life may change," he added. "So, that being said, after a break, I certainly started thinking, 'Gee, I'm not ready to hang it up. I wanna continue, and I wanna continue playing,' whatever that means.
"KISS is something that I've been a part of for 30 years now, and… I found something really interesting. After the 'Farewell' tour, I was getting my car fixed, and this guy came over to me… and I was thinking, 'It's over, we did the 'Farewell' tour,' and this guy comes walking over to me, and he goes, 'Wow, I was at the 'Farewell' tour, and it was so awesome. When are you doing the '30th Anniversary Tour'?' And a light bulb went off in my head. I went, 'Wait a minute…' Fans and people at large — the vast majority of people — don't care whether you've done a farewell tour. God knows there are bands that have made careers out of farewell tours. But at the end of the day, people wanna see KISS, and I wanna be there. And what means in terms of regularity, whatever, everything is up in the air and up for grabs."
With regards to guitarist Ace Frehley's absence from the group's current touring lineup, Stanley said, "God knows [sighs] … I'm trying to think… We spoke to Ace, I can't tell you for how long. He was wooed, he was pursued, he was talked to, and at some point, he stopped returning calls. We told him, and we showed him, how much we wanted him with us. And we also said — and maybe he didn't realize this — 'We really want you on board, but if you're not, and we decide to work, then the train leaves without you.' It was really [a case of], 'Let's gear up to do some exciting things that only a band like KISS can."
"All I know is that I have a desire to do certain things," Paul continued. "I have a desire, and there is a multitude of fans who want to see KISS. After that, who is in the band… It's no secret — what could be better than having all of the original members? For a lot of reasons. We're so blessed. I believe it's a sin — truly a sin — for people who have been in this band to not appreciate how blessed we all are. And whatever else you may wanna do, it just seems like such a shame not to take advantage of being in the band."
When asked to explain the reasons behind the band's decision to continue performing as KISS with non-original members assuming the "Spaceman" and "Catman" identities created for Frehley and drummer Peter Criss rather than being given new identities of their own, Stanley said, "[Coming up with fresh identities for the new members is] of no interest to the general public. The general public and the people who come to see this band identify the band by what the members look like. They don't necessarily know all the names. I know some fans may find that hard to believe, but everybody on the street doesn't know every member's name, but there's an image of the band that we all created, and as I said before, it's great to have the original guys, but this isn't something where I'm gonna short-change the majority of the public. There are die-hards — and I understand it — who say, 'Hey, how can you put someone else in that makeup?' I have to say that there's a vast majority who aren't saying that. So look, you can't please everybody all of the time, and I'm not going to. And the worst thing that anybody can ever try to do is please everyone. And you know what?! There are people now who are saying, 'Why do you have Peter back?' It's like, who is gonna be happy all the time? When Eric Carr joined the band, I can't tell how many die-hard fans said to me, 'I'm never gonna come see the band again.' Well, God rest his soul, Eric Carr was instrumental [in] and a cornerstone of keeping this band going. So you always have somebody going, 'I'm not gonna go along with it.' And you know something? I respect that. If you don't want to, don't. All I can tell you, is when I get up there, and when the band gets up there, it will be everything — and always has been — everything that people expect. That's my obligation and that's my responsibility, and that's what I will do — make sure that when people come to see KISS, they won't be disappointed, and no one has been."

Kiss is gone. Paul is stuck in 1980. People went to see the Farewell tour to say goodbye to them, its not as if they are generating any new fans. Its a nostalgia trip that will end soon. Psycho Circus sold like shit. No one wants to hear new material from them. Give it up Paul. Without all the original members, you're a cover band.

I saw two shows on the first and second legs of the Alive Worldwide tour. I'm happy enough about that that I don't feel the need to see them again. This will save me money to spend on, at least, 10 underground metal shows. Nile and Napalm Death, 02/03, here I come. I'll probably listen to Kiss Alive! on the way back from the show...lol.

I don't understand people who are always slagging KISS here. KISS is still one of the greatest bands ever existed in rock world.
How many other bands around have done their Farewell tour and are still doing more tours and new music ? --> Ozzy, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath come first in mind. And who here really believes that Megadeth is done deal :)
And speaking of "original" band .. Remember that KISS was here from 1979-1996 without Ace and Peter ! And they still sold millions of albums.
AND Psycho Circus sold almost 700 000 copies in States so it's not so bad sale .. i think ?
Hope they still will carry on many years. I will be there.

It would be cool to have Eric Singer on drums and Vinnie on guitar. Vinnie is a great guitarist and he also CAN write good songs.
Every time I am getting my car fixed, a guy comes over to me… and suggests to trash my car and buy a Ferrari instead - maybe I should also change my mind and give in? I guess that Paul Stanley would like to pass on one of his...

Let them tour if they want to....old habits die hard .....when rock n roll is the only life you have ever known its hard to say goodbye.....i see nothing wrong with kiss touring more and not hanging it up....ive seen them lots of times since the reunion tour and rarely saw an empty seat in the house....i say if theyre happy with touring more ,then more power to them......ill spend my money to see them again....they put on a great show and its always a great time....people are too quick to kick rock n roll veterans to the curb for the next new thing ...and lets face it the next new thing dosent last too long anymore and rarely comes with any talent....id rather be entertained by some "old" guys who atleast put their heart into their music than to be annoyed by flash in the pan recycled crap that clutteres the airwaves today....God gave rock n roll to you....dont ruin it!.....p.s. off topic i know but RAP DOES NOT BELONG ANYWHERE NEAR ROCK EITHER!!!!!!!

Recently Ace said that he's contacted ONLY after a tour/shows have already been annonunced.. As a lifelong KISS fan, since first hearing "Strutter" on an AM radio station in 1975..(So that makes ME Grandpa there MetalJoe..LOL) I've pretty much had enough of this same ol' bullshit we're fed. To answer the one question, yes KISS did continue without Pete and Ace, 1979-1983 all the albums flopped. (Even the badass Creature's album) but it wasn't until they took off the makeup in 1984 did they sell anything..then after reuniting in 1996 did they achieve some well deserved recognition for being a good old American rock band...but now they have gotten greedy. They can use the excuse of not retiring to Michael Jordan or whoever else, but the fact is, Psycho Circus wasn't the original band and it flopped. As much as it pains me to say, the only way the reality is going to come up and bite them in the ass, is when this next tour fails to sell out.. I do understand them wanting a new generation of KISS fans, but lets face it, they're not as young as they used to be and can't put on the shows like they could back in the "old days"...The 3 Farewell shows I seen, the vocals were suffering and the show was well, predictable.. Contrary to your belief Mr Stanley, not all your fans are sheep who will accept KISS with anyone behind the makeup or will accept this excuse to bleed the fans dry.. I, for one will not be there and I'll sit back and enjoy the memories..

Being a diehard fan for like...oh, a 100,000 years, I say, please guys, let's stop this nonsence. Do a world-tour (farewell) but this time for real. And to make it a show to end all shows, invite every member that has ever played in KISS, play songs from all area's, and end it with a big bang like you did with unplugged.Everyone on stage to play the most memorable KISS-songs. After that, pull the plug and let us live on the memories, tapes, dvd's, etc. You still look great, but you're really making a fool of yourself be this ongoing tragedy. The Second Coming Tour was great, the Psycho-Tour was okay, and I've heard that the Farewell tour was okay, thanx to Eric Singer, who made the music sound like a high-speed truck, instead of Peter Criss who was playing slower every night. I love Peter(as far as I know him) but he knows it is true!! All the things that you built up over the years will all crumble if you try to re-live the past. It really makes me sad. This is 2003, not 1975. Don't get me wrong, I still love those guys a lot, but they're losing all credibility. One tour with all the bad boys, and then stop, and the saga keeps on growing when you'll leave on a high note(remember Elvis). That symphony-thing is something to look forward to, and I'll still buy anything and follow everything they do, but one's again....it makes me sad to see the band that I love so much are doing this to themselves, and second....to us!! What do you think........???
