It's Official: MEGADETH Taps NEVERMORE/JAG PANZER Guitarist CHRIS BRODERICK - Jan. 14, 2008
As BLABBERMOUTH.NET first reported on January 7, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine has finally officially confirmed that the band has parted ways with guitarist Glen Drover and replaced him with Chris Broderick (NEVERMORE, JAG PANZER).

"I've noticed [on the Internet] that people are pissed with me over the way things were handled with Glen quitting the group," says Mustaine, "but they're gonna be pissed even more when they hear how fierce we are with Chris! MEGADETH is playing at a new level."

In a November 2007 posting on the forum of MEGADETH's official fan club, MegaFanClub (accessible to members only), Mustaine stated about Drover, "sadly, Glen is having a really difficult time handling the demands of touring and we are finding that we are having to cut our European run down already, but that it is going to be one of the last long ones for some time."

Chris will make his live debut with MEGADETH on February 4 in Finland, where the group — Mustaine, Broderick, drummer Shawn Drover and James Lomenzo on bass — is kicking off a long string of international dates which wrap March 14 in Bangalore, India.

Chris Broderick has been playing guitar since he was eleven years old and has been teaching for the last 15 years. Styles range from classical, rock, blues, and jazz. He started taking lessons at 14 years of age studying guitar as well as voice, violin, and piano. Chris has a degree in classical guitar music performance at the University of Denver and the Lamont School of Music. He has performed in many master classes including ones given by David Russell, Benjamin Verdery, and his primary instructor, Ricardo Iznaola. In addition, Chris has taken classes such as jazz improvisation, chord voicing, advanced music theory, and sight-reading.

The third installment of Gigantour — the acclaimed traveling heavy music festival launched in 2005 by Mustaine — will kick off April 12 in Denver, CO with headliner MEGADETH, Swedish metal band IN FLAMES, Finland's CHILDREN OF BODOM, Arizona's modern extreme JOB FOR A COWBOY and Oakland, CA heavy power trio HIGH ON FIRE all confirmed. The 29-date trek will criss-cross North America and wraps May 22 in Phoenix, AZ.

Mustaine sums up the philosophy behind Gigantour, hailed by Revolver magazine as "the mother of all shred-fests": "If the bands and the fans are treated well, then the entertained and the entertainers go home happy — it's a win-win situation." Since its inception in 2005, Gigantour has galvanized bands that emphasize true musicianship and virtuosity, offering them a new opportunity to showcase their talents. "I think that in a small way, we are cleaning up the environment of crappy bands," he says, laughing. "All of the people that really love this kind of music know that they can count on these bands to deliver the goods this year."

Gigantour features bands hand-picked by Mustaine with a sharp eye on true musicianship and a heavy focus on top-notch guitarists. The first incarnation in 2005 included DREAM THEATER, FEAR FACTORY, NEVERMORE, LIFE OF AGONY, SYMPHONY X, DRY KILL LOGIC and BOBAFLEX, while the 2006 trek included LAMB OF GOD, OPETH, ARCH ENEMY, OVERKILL, INTO ETERNITY, SANCTITY and THE SMASHUP. The trek always offers a strong connection between fans and musicians.

I was hoping he'd stay permanently in Nevermore. I don't really see that happening now. Well, he's an awesome guitar player and deserves this chance, and I really like Megadeth, just not nearly as much as I like Nevermore these days. Hope Nevermore can get a guitar palyer as good as Chris, or better if possible. Ron Jarzombek? Nah... I doubt he'd do it. It would be sick, though...

you doubt he'd do it?

"I also regret not sending anything to Dave Mustaine for the new MEGADETH. In both cases, I thought I didn't have a chance in hell of getting the gig, but found out later that I really missed out on the opportunity."

Another Jag Panzer album? It is long over due. I usually prefer Broderick's songs on their albums.

I was kinda saying that I'd like Ron to play for Nevermore, not Megadeth, since I'm more worried about Nevermore without a second guitar player than Megadeth... Megadave guys could pretty much get almost any metal guitar player he likes.

I give that to you, it would have ruled to see Ron in Megadeth. That way Ron, who is possibly the best metal guitar player around, would get a gig he deserves and Nevermore would still have a guitar player that can actually play their stuff, unlike Steve Smyth who couldn't play some of the more complex melodies and unisons. Chris dis play those live.

i don't give a flying fuck about two-handed arpeggios. i want great riffs and songs. i'm not saying the new guy won't be great (don't know him), but the tapping video is kinda irrelevant, to me at least; it's show over substance.

cheers.

Plus he'll stick around unlike Drover. In all honesty I prefer not to have these recurrent lineup changes. Drover was a cool fit for Megadeth. On the other half i'm really happy for Broderick and will support anything he and Megadeth do from now on.

I feel the UA lineup doesn't have a personality of its own. I'd like to see some musicians on the album who are able to stand out, like the RIP lineup did (even when they were putting out bad albums). Most importantly, I'd like to see Shawn pick up the pace if he's still around on then next one. I don't know if Dave is smothering his abilities or not, but I found much of the drumming on the UA album to be repetitive, and lacking a distinctive technique that I'm sure he's capable with.

Honestly, if the UA lineup is gone, I don't think I'd be too upset about it...

i believe the quote is "Rattle your goddamn head!"

the "goddamn" is essential to the impact of that phrase.

Dave might be allowed to say it any more because he's seen The Light, but surely you can.

need to shut up. Glen quit, it was HIS decision, not Dave's. Dave has had his issues in the past no doubt, but don't point the finger at him on this one. Broderick is a total upgrade anyway, just like Marty was when he replaced Jeff Young. Megadeth has always had great players, some are just a tad better than others, but all of them have been great. Shawn Drover, however, is easily the worst drummer thay have ever had and it will not be long until he announces his departure, guaranteed. If Broderick is around to play on the next Megadeth record, it will be something special just RIP was. Hope he stays.

I hear this every time a member leaves and new one comes. If org. Megadeth was at a 100% then by now they must at about 250%.

Being a guitar player for Megadeth is like being the drummer for Spinal Tap.

I liked Glenn's playing but Chris seems to be amazing. The question is can he write tasty stuff for Megadeth. The most important thing is solo quality, as in fitting the song not showing off. Marty Freedman is still tops for me.
