MEGADETH's DAVE MUSTAINE On Politicians Who Are Making Music Instead Of Facing It - Jan. 18, 2008
In a presidential race where all candidates are trying new (and old) shtick to grab the voters' attention, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine offered his thoughts this morning to ABC News on politicians who are making music instead of facing it. Watch the video at this location.

Mustaine has certainly been outspoken about his views on politics. He even admonished RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE's Tom Morello and the DIXIE CHICKS' Natalie Maines for allegedly having hypocritical stances during an interview with Pit magazine in 2004. (Read excerpts from the Pit interview at this location.)

"I think as far as politics are concerned in music, most musicians shouldn't say anything unless they're willing to get into the trenches and fight," Mustaine told Metal Edge magazine in a 2007 interview. "I put in my Selective Service card when I was 18, but I didn't get drafted. In 1992 I went to the White House with the Rock the Vote campaign for the Democratic National Convention coverage. I was a participant in getting a bill passed into law, so I am ingrained in the history of this country. I'm probably one of the very few musicians, and the only one in metal that I know of [to do that]. But I'm also the unofficial elected official of the disenfranchised youth of America. I can get into the focus groups and actually say what is relevant. Even though I'm not 18 anymore or struggling with Stridex and testosterone, I do still have an 18-year-old inside of me."

Dave Mustaine walked around Madison Square Garden in New York City during the Democratic National Convention in 1992 interviewing people. Watch the five-minute clip below.

Just because you weren't born a right thinking republican the first time doesn't mean you've got the lock on politics by using Fixed News/Limbaugh/Coulter talking points! Stick to whining about getting kicked out of Metallica 25 years ago you useless hot air filled douchebag!

Megadeth has sucked since the early 90s. Went VERY generic right after Metallica.

He is an old burn out/sell out/wanna be. I might want to be careful,he might threaten to kick my ass with his martial arts...When he is afraid to share the stage with those who are more relevant, talented, and intelligent.

Well Dave...since you were born in 1961, and the draft ended in 1973, when you were 11 or 12, it's no wonder you weren't drafted. EVERY 18 year old is required to sign up with the Selective Service, Dave. Good job trying to make yourself sound more important then you are.

even a lame fuck like dee snider was fighting the pmrc for free speech and expression in the 80's long before mustaine had opened his shit-eating mouth about anything political. he may think he's the only "metal" person involved in politics but of course he's wrong. he's just jealous of all the people in the punk community who have been way more involved in political action anyway. i love metal but they have a much richer and deeper involvement in politics. fuck off mustaine. go hang out with mike huckabee and chuck norris.

I'm wondering if Dave is directing his comments toward Tom Morello and the Dixie Chicks only because they happen to be on the opposite side of the political spectrum than he is. Tom Morello has been more politically active than most other musicians, and it all happened in his nice little pristine neighborhood in Illiinois when he was young and found a noose hanging in his garage. That made him want to fight injustice and say something in music against ignorance. The man went to Harvard and had an audience with Noam Chomsky. He's been doing a lot since. The Nightwatchman, for example.

Dave Mustaine has a good point about socially conscious musicians walking the walk than just talking the talk, but why does he think that Morello, Natalie Maines, and others, who are either politically progressive or critical of the current administration NOT doing something? Given Dave's current political leanings, is he thinking that these musicians are just lazy corporate hacks who say one thing and do another? Are his comments just another way of saying, "If you're socially conscious and liberal, you should just shut up and let ME do the talking"?

I like Megadeth's music because of its social commentary as well as its thrashing nature and excelleent musicianship, but I take it with a grain of salt when Dave says something in defense of born again Republican politics and rags on people who are not on his wavelength.

Dave Mustaine has gone off the deep end. He's basically borderline schizo with delusions of grandeur all this talk about writing Marty's solos, fantasies about Tae Kwon Do matches with dead black metal musicians, etc..

Dave isn't the only heavy metal musician to affect legislation. Dee Snider was all over the PMRC in the eighties. Sure, Twisted Sister isn't terribly metal, but I think that as far as long term influence on the government and society goes, Snider beats the crap out of Dave. We've still got the parental advisory stickers, and that's largely because the labels backed down to the PMRC. And, by the way, the labels are voluntary in the books. You don't have to have them. But the truth is, for disenfranchised youth, seeing that label validates that the album is against society, and actually raised sales of metal in the 1980's.

Mike Huckabee is guy playing bass and he said, "I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view." He also says that when he is elected he will round up all illegal imigrants(I am assuming that he means only the brown ones) and deport them immediately. In a 1992 statement, Huckabee advocated isolating AIDS patients from the general population. Huckabee also said that "homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle, and we now know it can pose a dangerous public health risk." You want to know the worst part? He won the Iowa caucus and is a top three runner for the Republican nomination. That means a lot of Americans feel the way he does and want their will imposed upon the rest of us. I think Dave is wrong, he should stick to playing bass and stay out of politics.
