MIKE PATTON Doesn't Rule Out FAITH NO MORE Reunion - Jan. 19, 2008
Artisan News Service reports: Mike Patton, currently fronting MONDO CANE and about four other different bands, made his mark in the late '80s, early '90s fronting FAITH NO MORE. It was the band's "The Real Thing" album that created the funk-metal craze, opened the door for the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS brand of funk-rock, and tipped off what would become the nu-metal revolution. Bands as diverse as KORN and the MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES benefitted from their groundbreaking work, with songs like "Epic" and "From Out Of Nowhere". Throw in NIRVANA, and the alternative revolution was born.

Artisan News Service spoke to Mike Patton and asked him if he thought "The Real Thing" would be as influential to music as any album in the last 20 years.

On whether he is aware of "The Real Thing"'s influence:

Patton: "No, but it's not my place to criticize. I just make the music and put it out there. Where it fits in the world, how important it is, how important it isn't is up to people like you. I have nothing to say about it."

On how he remembers his days with FAITH NO MORE:

Patton: "Fondly. They were good years. It was a decade of my life. It was lots of ups and lots of downs, but ultimately that's where I learned my chops and learned the craft and the business."

With "The Real Thing" celebrating 20 years next year, is there a possibility of getting back together with the FAITH NO MORE guys?

Patton: "I wouldn't rule it out. I don't think we would need to reform the band, but maybe there's other things we can do together."

Watch video footage of Mike Patton talking about FAITH NO MORE and "The Real Thing" at Artisan News Service.

I'd prefer Bungle, but FNM reunion would still be amazing. Tomahawk's last album I thought was disappointing. Very good idea though and actually, if it was any other band I would probably enjoy it. It's just that it had very little to do with their previous albums, musically. I suppose I should come to expect that kind of spontaneity from Mike Patton by now.

i don't need to name names, but they're a couple of self-professed "legends" that should take notes from Patton:

don't pat yourself on the back. put out great music and history will decide your place in the books. or the fans will decide who is the "best" of anything.

my $.02. and -- coming from a fan, not Mike -- i think he's fucking killer. for what he does (diverse, aggresive singing) he's tops in my book.

a FNM renuion would be aces.

cheers.

Jim Martin was on the classic albums so he is always going to be the favourite. King For a Day is perhaps my favourite album by them so I'd be very happy with Trey Spruance but obviously that's unlikely.

Probably won't even happen though.

I'm pretty sure Jim Martin could leave his pumpkins crops for a while, no?

I loved every album these guys did. I agree Jim Martin is the favorite because he is on their more 'popular' albums, but didn't Jim say at one point he felt that most of Angel Dust didn't need his guitar work? Sounds like he's pretty happy what he's doing too, I doubt he could leave his family or pumpkins at this point, too bad he kicked ass. I actually enjoyed the changing guitar from album to album, so as long as the guy that tours with them can play it all, I'll pay to see as many shows as I can with whoever.
Mike Patton is wacked, period, puts out some K-rap, and puts out some genius work, but the world needs Faith No More....AND Mr. Bungle!!!!!!

Not a 100% sure on this but pretty damn close, this has to be the first time Patton has actually said he is open to a reunion of some sorts. Usually he just gives the old typical statement the past is the past I've moved on crap.

I know alot of these guys have been busy with there own things. Not counting Jim, well not busy in the sense of music with him.

Over the last few years(5 to 7) I really felt Patton was almost wasting his talent. Was the music ground breaking, sure. Was the music interesting, on some level. But over all you could pretty much sum it up as one or two litsenings and move on. None of it is really music you'd listen to over and over. Alot of it was so out there it was such a small group that even took the time to listen to it. Even if you are big fan of Patton's work after FNM I sure you'd even agree your FNM cds get or got more play time then any work he did afterwards.

Hopefully they do a tour and maybe even in album. There legacy is carved in stone already so if do get back together it doesn't need to be this huge time consuming project like it is with most bands.

I think Faith no More has always been overrated. Mike Patton's vocals are copied by a few modern rock bands, especially Lost Prophets.

They've created music that is copied 10-15 years later. "The Real Thing" sounds a bit outdated as it sounds like old RHCP (Uplift Mofo Party Plan era), although it's still good to listen. I think they proved with "Angel Dust", "King for a Day" and "Album of the Year" how great they were musically. No one else sounded like them and what pisses me off is that some bands today literally copied their sound.

"Digging the Grave", "Last Cup of Sorrow" or "Midlife Crisis" could have been released last week and they would still be fresh and kick some serious ass.

If they reunite, I'll be more than happy.

Mr. Bungle's first album was amazing, I think the others all sucked.

Fantomas, Tomohawk, Patton's album with an Italian title and Peeping Tom were total crap imo. Noise and whatever, period.

Nothing's stopping you, Mike. Mr. Bungle had about an album and a half of quality music and Fantomas, Tomahawk and Peeping Tom quickly ran their course as well.

Least you had 3 good albums under your belt when you were in Faith No More.

it sounds like Patton is saying that he'd get back together with one or two of the FNM guys to do a one-off show, but not all of the guys. since Mike Bordin is constantly busy in Ozzy's band, maybe he'd be willing to get together with Roddy & Billy.

He mentioned something not so long ago, in fact, I'll just quote what he said:

"Every four or five years, some Svengali who thinks he can change the world comes with a briefcase full of cash and makes a crazy offer," he said. "And it's not easy to (refuse). It would be very easy for some of us to rehearse for a couple of days, smile and cash the check. I'm not at that point. I got enough things on my plate. Maybe if he comes with two briefcases full of money..."

Perhaps he's coming round to the idea, perhaps not.

Their first album was quite assessable and was probably the most fun. Disco Volante was a ground breaking slab of Jazz Metal, but certainly mostly not assessable to none musicians. As for California, I'm surprised you didn't enjoy that! Each to their own of course, but even my mother listens to and enjoys California.

Angel Dust is by far the best FNM release. Tied for second for me are king for a day... and the real thing

I'm guessing that probably all we'll see is some kind of collaboration between Patton and some combination of Billy Gould, Puffy, and/or Bottum (as those three are still into music-making)
