MAYHEM Wins Norway's SPELLEMANN Award
- Feb. 2, 2008
|
|
Legendary Norwegian black metallers MAYHEM were honored in the "Metal" category at the 36th annual Spellemann awards (the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy Awards) for their latest release, "Ordo Ad Chao". The largest and oldest Norwegian music awards show was held earlier tonight (Saturday, February 2) at the Spektrum in Oslo, Norway and was broadcast live on the Norwegian channel TV2. A photo of MAYHEM members Jan Axel Blomberg (a.k.a. Hellhammer; drums) and Jørn Stubberud (a.k.a. Necrobutcher; bass) with their Spellemann award can be viewed at Dagbladet.no. Speaking to Dagbladet.no, Stubberud implied that MAYHEM might have released its last album ever with "Ordo Ad Chao". "For us to make a record is such a great undertaking that I have to admit I can't entertain the idea of starting a new one," he said. "We'll see in a couple of years, but I can't guarantee anything whatsoever." The nominees in the "Metal" category were as follows: AUDREY HORNE - "Le Fol" (Indie Recordings) DIMMU BORGIR - "In Sorte Diaboli" (Nuclear Blast) MAYHEM - "Ordo Ad Chao" (Season Of Mist) RED HARVEST - "A Greater Darkness" (Season Of Mist) For more information (in Norwegian), visit www.spellemann.no. "Ordo Ad Chao" entered the Norwegian album chart at position No. 12, the band's highest position ever. MAYHEM had only once before been on the Norwegian charts, when the band's last album, "Chimaira", reached No. 28 in 2004. "Ordo Ad Chao" was also nominated in the "Metal" category at Alarmprisen 2007 (Alarm Awards), which was held on October 27, 2007 at Sentrum Scene in Oslo, Norway (the award eventually went to DIMMU BORGIR). Back in June 2007, MAYHEM cancelled its "Deconsecrate the States" 2007 U.S. tour as a result of a serious injury suffered by drummer Hellhammer. France's Radio Metal conducted an interview with MAYHEM singer Attila Csihar on December 18, 2007 in Lyon. Watch part one of the chat below.

Euronymous is spinning in his grave. "The True Mayhem" of 1992/3 is not the Mayhem of now.

I know you can't look grim and kvlt all the time, but wow. Didn't know Hellhammer's desire to look like a Backstreet Boy. If there's an upside though, I bet none of the fans recognize him in public.

Euronymous spinning in his grave would be a funny sight, considering he isn't in it. He was cremated, anyway. But really, grow up people. He's been dead almost 15 years. As great as a guitarist, intelligent (brilliant, actually) and a friend to those who knew him as he was, Blasphemer is much more creative, better technically and more the persona which fits in the band. Does everyone think Euronymous was this evil, intimidating, violent person which was his "reputation"? Sorry to ruin it for you- he wasn't at all like that. He was hilariously funny and very considerate to everyone (except maybe the parishoners at Holmenkollen Kirke. Haha). His side project called L.E.G.O. played the most side-splitting live gig I have ever seen. What he portrayed in interviews and photos fit and fueled Mayhem's image. So did Pelle. Was he evil? Twisted, strange and the most depressed person known to man (Fenriz said it best- it was like he sucked all of the happiness out of the room just being around him. He radiated sadness.), but combined they helped make the entity that comprised Mayhem what it was. The "true Mayhem of 1992/93" would be Vikernes, Atilla, Hellhammer, Blackthorn and Euronymous. I'll admit that thanks to Blackthorn, "Buried by Time and Dust" and "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" would not have turned out the way they did. The title track from DMDS has been my favorite since the day it was first recorded (although I STILL liked the original version better), but Dead never even heard it. He also didn't write the lyrics to one of the songs on that album. So what? It's still a masterpiece, thanks to EVERYONE who was involved in it.
Just look at it this way- whether you like the "new" Mayhem or not, be thankful they've carried on since August 1993. If they hadn't, even the "new Mayhem sucks. Euronymous was God" people would never have gotten a chance to hear "Chansaw Gutsf*ck", "Deathcrush", "Necrolust" or whatever else they like from that era live, because NONE of them saw them live (in person, not on video, kids) with Euronymous or Dead. The few who actually did must be looking at things from a totally different angle. There are two opinions; either they don't care, or they think it's great. Personally, I'd love to have Euronymous back, side-by-side with Rune, or still in Oslo, selling records. I can't. Neither can anyone else. Grow up, move on, buy some white leather pants to match Hellhammer's or something. Is it REALLY that important about what he wears in public, anyway? You're talking about a guy (one of my best friends, actually) who drove his Volvo until it literally was falling apart and you had to crawl in the passenger side to get the driver's door open and drinks whisky until he can't stand up. If that isn't Metal, what is?

Mange takk!
I very much agree on Ordo Ad Chao. It's a very, very deep album which takes a lot to "get", but when it does, it completely stuns you. As much as I like the straight-forward chaos (there's an oxymoron for you) of "Wolf's Lair Abyss", I would most certainly rank the newest album second only to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. I only wish OAC was mixed a little better, for the only reason that it has a tendency to destroy speakers at high volume. Otherwise, it's an album that I doubt will be outdone by anyone anytime soon, if at all.

I think my point of above (towards the top) is that Euronymous was definitely the driving force of the original Mayhem, and it lost his direction and vision for the band after his death (of course). It's entirely true, he spent most of his time listening to The Residents, Tangerine Dream, E.N., etc. and it was this esoteric education that fueled what he wanted to do in metal. It was just as much about evocation as provocation. Now it's just run-of-the-mill "extreme metal." We're in agreement.

I love your comment. Yeah, the early Mayhem was groundbreaking/classic/kvlt, etc. Shit, I still think De Mysteriis is one of the most important and greatest black metal albums of all time, but things must go on. I love the direction that Mayhem has gone into. Grand Declaration Of War rules, and so does Ordo Ad Chao. Some people just can't deal with change I guess.

Blasphemer is a piece of shit. New Mayhem is an affront and a sleazy way to cash in on someone else's (Euronymous') creation. I can't change your opinion about their new musical direction but there's no denying that it's wrong for them to use the name. Fuck these asshats.

Who cares if Necrobutcher was a founding member of the band, or that Hellhammer and Attila did vocals on their most definitive album? They shouldn't be allowed to use the Mayhem name! (sarcasm)

Øystein = Old Mayhem Rune = New Mayhem
And the new Mayhem is ten times better than the old Mayhem ever was. Has nothing to do with anything except one thing:
Musicianship!
