BEHEMOTH Frontman In Hot Water Over Bible-Tearing Incident

Ryszard Nowak, who heads the All-Polish Committee for Defence against Sects, has reportedly registered an official complaint with the authorities in Poland regarding a BEHEMOTH concert that took place in the Polish city of Gdynia in September 2007 that included the destruction of a Bible by the band's leader, vocalist/guitarist Adam "Nergal" Darski. During a break in the show, Nergal apparently called the Catholic Church "the most murderous cult on the planet" before tearing up the Bible, stating, "they call it the Holy Book, I call this the book of lies. Fuck the shit, fuck the hypocrisy." Fan-filmed video footage of the incident can be viewed below (the Bible-tearing takes place around the 45-second mark). Nowak is no stranger to controversy, having previously compiled a list of artists who allegedly "promote Satanism" through their music and distributed it to various Polish officials in an attempt to get the artists banned from performing in Poland. It is not presently clear if any action will be taken against Nergal, who previously stated about Nowak's efforts to get BEHEMOTH banned from performing in the group's home country, "I am shocked; this must be some kind of joke. We've been touring around the whole world — United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Russia — and we've not had any problems anywhere. I am surprised that we are being judged by our appearance and that no one even took the time to contact us and ask us what our music is all about. Other than that, come on — there are enough serious matters to be dealt with in Poland! Wish he would've done that when they played Texas in October. I would've loved to seen that. Especially in the Bible belt...oh boy it could've got ugly. He should've done that at SOTU in '06 when The Chariot was playing right after them, that shit would've been awesome. Imagine it, The Chariot out there standing in a pile of ripped up bible pages! On the other hand, its not the best way to promote atheism, but I'll take whatever we can get.

Unfortuantely, even if it was a gimmick, it probably won't yield the same results that say, Marilyn Manson got in the 90's. Manson had radio and MTV airplay to brodcast his theatrics. What does Behemoth get? A fan made video and some pissed off Polish people.

This isn't America where they were playing. They were in Poland where I guess they have laws and statutes against those who defame the church. There isn't freedom of speech in Poland and no separation of church and state necessarily.
That said, I think you should be free to do whatever you want as long as no physical harm is caused. He knew what shit he was gonna get for it, but obviously he didn't care. Good for him to do what he wanted and expressing the views he wanted...

Its good to see people debating about religion like this. It would be nice to see some popular politician taking a stance for atheism, and then see them debate with people favoring religion. Unfortunately, I live in Texas and most people here are "god-fearin", so a friendly discussion is unlikely. I tried to talk intelligently with some Jeovah's (sp?) Witnesses one time but once they figured out they couldn't convert me, they split. Although we each had questions for each other, I wanted to know what gave them the faith to believe and they wanted to know when I stopped believing. But it seemed like a sales call. Once they knew I wasn't goin for it, on to the next house.

It's not like he's burned a church, he did it at his own concert in front of fans (most likely people who supported the act). I don't see where the harm lies. He didn't infringe on anyone's right and shouldn't be accused of anything.

Uh-oh...I sure hope Marilyn Manson doesn't come to this site, he might see your pissing on a priest idea and act on it for his upcoming tour. You know, to make a grab at that former glory. I said it in the nineties and I'll say it now, if someone is acting controversial, just ignore them and they'll go away. I think people truly can see through a gimmick if theres genuine talent. But as long as there's headlines about their antics, they're gonna hang around. Although, I don't know how Insane Clown Posse is still around. Or Marilyn Manson for that matter. It is a metal show, ripping up the bible, spitting blood and breathing fire is always cool especially when the music is brilliant...the rest is just the icing on the cake. There is nothing wrong with entertaining an audience, unless of course you are an asshole who loves being bored and pissing all over everyone else’s demonic good times! People who bitch about nothing should be put to sleep. And he has a right to say that it is lame for them to give a shit about what a metal band does on stage.
