AXL ROSE Negotiating For More Money Before Releasing 'Chinese Democracy'? - Feb. 6, 2008
According to The Pulse of Radio, recent reports have indicated that GUNS N' ROSES' long-awaited new album, "Chinese Democracy", is finished and the group's frontman W. Axl Rose is negotiating for more money with his record label before he will release the masters.

The ever-shifting GUNS N' ROSES lineup began working on "Chinese Democracy" sometime in the mid-'90s, and has reportedly spent $13 million recording the effort. Promised release dates in 2006 and 2007 did not materialize.

GUNS N' ROSES has only toured twice in the last 14 years: an aborted 2002 run that only lasted for a few shows, and a far more successful 2006 trek that took the latest lineup around the world.

Although Rose is considered one of rock's greatest frontmen, his sometimes irrational behavior onstage, reclusive lifestyle and notoriety for feuding with other rock stars has also earned him a reputation as one of rock's true eccentrics.

"The case against Chinese Democracy
Or, why Slash must fight Axl to the death in an alley

It's pretty pathetic but the “Welcome to the Jungle” video is one of my top-three I Remember When (I.R.W.) moments.

I.R.W. No. 1: Seventh-grade English when Ryan Welch came in crying to tell us the space shuttle Challenger had exploded.

I.R.W. No. 2: Driving to work listening to NPR when Bob Edwards told me about the towers coming down.

I.R.W. No. 3: Sitting cross-legged on the floor with Ty Sage drinking Pepsi and eating Pringles when I first saw Axl get off the bus and drown in that oh-so-sublime hell of Sunset Strip.

I don't remember if I said it to Ty or if he said it to me, and I know the words weren't this well-crafted, but someone said to someone: “This is tantamount to witnessing the birth of our Lord. It's indubitably the apex of rock-nay, modern culture. Nay, human history.”

Or maybe it was just: “Holy fuck, dude! Did you see that!?!?”

On my deathbed, this moment will likely flash before me; my first listen to Chinese Democracy will not. Hell, I may not even live that long. And this is why I beg you Axl: Please don't ever release Chinese Democracy.

Every generation has its white whale record-the album every fan knows is weeks from being complete when the shit goes down. The singer goes into a rage and torches the masters, the guitarist's halfway through recording the final epic solo when he ODs, the A&R guy doesn't hear a hit and drops the band from the label. The hippies had The Beach Boys' Smile. Their kids had Prince's Black Album. We've got Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy.

If you were born between 1970 and 1980, you probably spent most of you childhood loving or hating Guns N' Roses. Likely your love or hate peaked with Use Your Illusion. The biggest news in rock since, well, Appetite for Destruction, made your RATT records sound like Herman's Hermits. Both volumes of Illusion went platinum half a dozen times over, MTV poured “November Rain” down our horny gullets every 15 minutes and GNR spent two years on the road playing more than 200 shows. Naturally the follow-up has been hotly anticipated, and anticipated, and anticipated.

After spending an estimated $16 million (which would make it the most expensive album ever) and 10 years in the studio, Axl promised that 2006 was the year of Chinese Democracy.

Wait-sorry-as I was typing, things changed. Axl now promises that 2007 is the year of Chinese Democracy (March 7 if you're sucker enough to believe his latest press release).

Three months back, Rose told New York magazine that he won't release the album until he knows it's “a good record.”

“It's not about being a control freak,” he said. “It's about being maybe smart enough to go, ‘No, that's a bad idea.' That's all it's about. Keeping the ability to at least have a shot as opposed to something that's just an obvious disaster. I want to make a good record. I don't want to throw a brick. This cannot be Shaq at the free-throw line.”

All of this sounds reasonable. But it's totally not. Axl, please don't ever release Chinese Democracy.

Smile and the Black Album have set a precedent. No matter how great these white whales are, once they're harpooned, they are always disappointing. When Brian Wilson finally released Smile, there were just way too many songs about vegetables and barnyard animals. When Prince's authorized version of the Black Album surfaced, the rock-funk hybrid that would have been mind blowing in 1988 was a total let down.

“Welcome to the Jungle” kicked my junior-high ass because it came out of nowhere and sounded like nothing I'd ever heard (OK, it sounded like an adolescent, psychotic, punk-speed-metal Rolling Stones' song-but in the seventh grade I barely knew the Stones, Ramones or Aerosmith, so GNR was a revelation). “Welcome to the Jungle” worked so well because I didn't expect it. But Chinese Democracy is a gigantic, mountainous, steaming pile of expectation.

Really, the best thing Axl could do for his career is die-preferrably in a back-alley knife fight with Slash after a chance meeting backstage at a Hold Steady show. Slash would pull a blade from his top hat and slash Axl through the heart, and as Rose bled to death he would only say, “Don't release Chinese Democracy; it's not-mmphhhhgggarrrglllecough.” At least then, we GNR fans could endlessly tell doubters: “Axl would have never approved of this. Man, if he had just waited a month to fight Slash behind that burned-out Shoney's, this album would be great.”

But no, soon enough Axl will disappoint us with the biggest piece of shit ever. Or will he? He's still canceling shows. He's still a mercurial little bitch ready to fuck his fans at every turn. Maybe-no, he'll release it. If there's one thing he knows, it's how to fuck up his legacy."

And when Steven Adler dies, his gravestone will read: Guns n' Roses will soon be reuniting - stay tuned for all the rock n' roll action in the afterlife!

2nd: from the demos I've hear, it will sound like shit for sure. Forget everything you ever have heard about GNR, cause it ain't GNR anyway. It'll be the kind fo shit that appeared on the End Of Times soundtrack (that "Oh My God" song was unlistenable, seems Axl thought it would be cool to sound like Nine Inch Nails!)

3rd: anyway, spending over a decade on the same album, I guess if he waited so much, he wasn't sure it was good! lol Think about it, most bands have released 6 albums since the Chinese Democracy sessions have started! And I remember always seeing every 6 months the healdines "Chinese Democracy will be in stores before a few weeks" and years later, still nothing! That album is already a joke, so better keep it for yourself Axl! I hope you'll have a pretty good release party in 2034 when the album will finally be out and you'll have re-recorded every fuckin' note for the 6473th time!

Also, those who accuse Axl of "breaking up one of the greatest bands" in AFD-era GNR - without him, who got over 40% of the songwriting credit and fees (2x more than any other), he who had the whole album re-recorded at the time to make it sound more punk and "live" - it was mainly HIS doing. Stop blaming a guy for inventing the wheel and then making a different one, even though everyone loved the first version.

He is different yeah, and sometimes ridiculous but quit being so simple minded. It is what it is.

BTW I believe the dispute now is over promotion - Axl of course wants a lot for promtion and the record co. does not. So there you go.

I remember when Brian Bosworth ("the Boz") joined the Seahawks and showed up at Candlestick in SFO. Many in the crowd had "I Hate the Boz" and "Boz Sucks" t-shirts on. When asked what he thought about it, he divulved that it was HIS t-shirt company that was printing them.

Point? He wanted to sell a character...not just a few t-shirts. Guns created a "character" in 1986 with all the "most dangerous band in the world" shit. Axl's doing nothing different today: he's "moving the market" as they say on Wall Street. Evidence? Look no further than those GNR haters that feel the need to justify why Chi Dem won't come out. Save your breath...it's definitely coming (probably even this year).

Axl is abrasive, bipolar, and a general SOB to deal with, but he's also a pretty damn good businessman. He has some serious leverage with the record company because they've already sunk $10MM+ into the project. That becomes sunk cost unless they can A) Move units or B) Get $ out of Axl's other pocket (merchandising, touring, etc.).

It may be in Geffen's best interest to stake some more $ for promotion or they can't make the sales figures they need to recoup. Another possibility is that Baz was right and Chi Dem is a 3-4 volume opus...better get your claws in on the front end or maybe Axl holds back "other projects" or maybe even gives the music to another label...what does he care?? He's already done all the heavy-lifting on Geffen's $.

Bottom line is that Axl is holding all the cards here. Like him, hate him, or somewhere inbetween...he already has you interested enough to wonder WTF he's up to. You'll be there creaming in your Dora the Explora backpack when he finally releases it.

in response to your comment about quotations, if you understood proper citation methods you would have cited your source. In fact, just using quotes without any form of citation is in fact plagarism. Please feel free to just stop posting here at blabbermouth or attend some sort of higher learning establishment so you can learn how to write your own material.

oh my God... HA HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA...

now that I caught my breath...

Doesn't AXL owe the record company MILLIONS of dollars to recoup the expenses of over a DECADE of recording costs?!?!??!

I think the big winners of all this are Tommy Stinson and the other hired hands. They're on salary. Like lawyers, they're doing to make the most money. They get paid no matter what. The longer this album takes to get released, the more money they're going to make for doing absolutely nothing.

is right. Slash's book is a great read. Then you can all understand
why Axl is the over rated powertripping asshole that he is.

Just for snicks I wen back and listened to the Illusion's this week.
These albums suck ! Maybe 5 or 6 good songs.

CD will be even worse.

Can't wait to download it for F R E E !!

Y'all sound like a bunch of old ladies gossiping.
Shame on you! And some of you call yourself fans??!!
I don't think so. Fans are loyal and NOT backstabbing.

W. Axl Rose is the ONLY person who knows. So, y'all can just quit yapping and wait and see what the outcome will be.
In the Interim, I suggest you look for a job, while Mr. Rose enjoys his well deserved luxurious lifestyle.

signed,
a loyal fan (for life)
with or without "Chinese Democracy"

Well ... it's NOT hard to figure out who is behind the feedback here!
LOTS of talk about Slash and his book.. hmmm... *reads story over .. umm NO..no mention of the book NOR the heroin drug addict.
Umm .. since were on the topic, y'all seem to enjoy. I have a quick question. How does a person who has been stoned on Heroin and DRUNK on Jack Daniels the whole time he was with Axl .. and most of his life,... write about HIS life?? Seems to me, it should be somewhat distorted, .. a blur. That book is BS!
