JOE LYNN TURNER Says He Should Front Reunited RAINBOW, Not RONNIE JAMES DIO - Feb. 14, 2008
Jeb Wright of Classic Rock Revisited recently conducted an interview with legendary hard rock vocalist Joe Lynn Turner (ex-DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Classic Rock Revisited: Do you think [Ritchie] Blackmore will ever quit doing BLACKMORE'S NIGHT?

Joe: That is the question of the universe. There have been so many rumors about a reunion with different lineups. Ritchie always gets tired eventually. This one is waning. I have heard that he is now hit-and-miss with the band as some gigs are full and some gigs are not full. He is also picking up the electric more and people are always screaming for PURPLE and RAINBOW. I think it is possible that a reunion could happen — that is a political answer but he always gets tired of things and he always is looking for new blood so there is always the chance of something happening.

Classic Rock Revisited: If RAINBOW were to get back together who should be the singer? Ronnie James Dio or you?

Joe: I know it won't be Dio because I talk to Ronnie and he is doing quite well on his own. We were offered to do the three singers of RAINBOW but that would have been a nightmare. Actually, we all get along so that might have been cool but I know Ronnie would never do it. Graham [Bonnet] would do it. I will tell you something funny. One night I was in Madrid with my friend Doogie White and we were absolutely plastered. Doogie goes, "Fuck you, it should be me as the singer if RAINBOW reformed." I was like, "You're going to sing my songs?" I was really digging at him. I said, "What was the name of the RAINBOW album you were on?" I was taking the piss out of him and then three Jack Daniels later were hugging. He thinks he was the unsung hero of RAINBOW. He emails me all the time about the gigs he does with Yngwie Malmsteen. He once told me he had to sing seven shows in a row. I asked him, "How do you sing seven shows in row" and he said, "Nobody gives a shit about the singer in this band." Okay, now I will answer your question directly: It should be me. I will tell you why, Dio had the heavier sort of dungeons and dragons stuff — don't get me wrong, I love the stuff and I am even singing some of his stuff like "Last in Line" and "Rainbow in the Dark" in BIG NOIZE. I am a huge fan of Ronnie James Dio but we [RAINBOW with Joe Lynn Turner] did have the sales. We also had the worldwide notoriety and the commercial success. They had a poll one time about who should be the singer and overwhelmingly it was me — and I need the work [laughter].

Classic Rock Revisited: You are the one guy who had always got along with Ritchie Blackmore. How in hell have you pulled that one off?

Joe: Many, many psychology courses [laughter]. I have an un-reactive mind. I have learned the Buddhist way to respond and not react. If you react to Ritchie then that is what he expects. If you learn to not react to him but instead respond with something that challenges his psyche then he respects that. Ritchie is the kind of guy who likes to push and pull you so he can see what kind of person you really are. It is a power struggle with him. One night we were crawling around on the floor drunk and I told him, "We are not going to last very long because I am afraid of intimacy." Ritchie goes, "And we are getting way too friendly." I just said, "We better enjoy it while we have it." He still says great things about me in interviews and I am really proud that he does that. The only differences we ever had were when we were fighting over what we thought was best for the music. Ritchie wanted everything to be the best it could possibly be. He wanted you to dig into the lyrics and the music and make it the best. When it was not up to snuff, he would just call the guy out on it. When he would say that to me then I would go write another lyric and sing another song better than I did before and he would say, "Now that's it." On "Street of Dreams", Ritchie came in after I sang the vocal — I had a really great moment on that song, obviously. He said, "I can't play the lead. I'm intimidated." I said, "What?" He said, "Your vocal is spot-on." I said, "It is a good vocal and it is just what we believe in with others lives and reincarnation." I broke open two Heinekens and I said, "You go in there. This is our creation; this is our baby." He lit the candles and got in the mood but he rose to the occasion. He came out and said, "Cheers, mate. Thanks for the inspiration." We were in Copenhagen at the time and there was a huge storm. They are at a point of longitude and attitude where there is a lot of huge electrical storms. They had a huge electric rod on top of the building. We were discussing this and there was a loud snap and all the lights went out. We were sitting in the dark. All of the candles came out and then he looked at me and said, "This is a sign." It was pretty eerie. Eventually, the lights came back on and the machines pumped back on and we went back to work. He would say, "Now we are working with other powers — not the lower powers but the higher powers."

... I know, that made me feel uncomfortable reading that - weird shit. He not only told that to the magazine, but Blabbermouth now has it posted. Open the floodgates, this will be funny.

I'd like to see Dio as well, but too many egos and H & H is doing really well. I'll settle for second best - Joe Lynn was still damn good.

JLT's voice has really crapped out, RJD may not be what it was, nothing ever is, but he still has it for 65+!

THREE singers of Rainbow?!! Stranger In Us All might not have been a big seller, but that was solely due to the trends of when it was released, not the quality of the material. It was as solid as any album Turner made and it rocked more consistently than the majority of them. I understand him thinking that he is more entrenched in the band's history, even thinking that he's just plain better, but it's repulsively arrogant to say that the vocalist on another great album doesn't even deserve--literally--to be counted.

DIO is the man, but he is too busy with other things now = Heaven and Hell and his next solo album. Blackmore is always the problem though - not a singer.

C'mon, a JLT-fronted Rainbow reunion would be nice, but everyone wants to see Dio. Yes, the JLT verison had some hits, but the Dio-era albums have the longevity and were profoundly influential. Rainbow Rising is widely regarded as one of the greatest hard rock/heavy metal albums of all time. This is the lineup Rainbow fans really want to see. Personally, I'd love to see both Dio and keyboardist Tony Carey perform with Ritchie. This isn't meant to put JLT down. He's a great vocalist and I'd love to see that verison of Rainbow, too, but a Dio-fronted reunion would be off the charts.

The first 2 rainbow albums are brilliant (it started going down hill with the 3rd) the rest I don't care for, radio friendly bollocks. Dio/Blackmore will always be Rainbow the rest is just a pale imitation.

iT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT THE ONLY "REAL" Rainbow reunion would have to be with Ronnie. There is only one singer to sing "Stargazer", " A Light in the Black" etc. and while they sold a lot of albums during the Joe Lynn era, comparatively that stuff was drivel.
I would certainly not want to see a band I respect as much as Rainbow fronted by a singer who although has a great voice utters innane stage banter like "how many people out there tonight like sex?" Please no Joe!!!
Ritchie, if you bring Rainbow back and Ronnie is not in the mix at least try to get Doogie.

The reunion with Dio was almost official a couple of years ago right about the time Cozy Powell died. Both Dio and Ritchie decided that without Cozy there shouldn't be a Rainbow reunion. As far as a reunion with Joe, whatever... Bent out of shape was a good album and all, but the real thing should be with Ronnie.

Don't mind Joe's comment as I believe he is currently eating out of trash cans and he DOES need the gig. Imagine that, a guy like Joe in a band doing Dio covers. Plain pathetic.

The world needs a Wigbow reunion (yeah, like we all want to hear 'Street of Dreams' instead of 'Gates of Babylon' sung by Dio - LOL) about as much as a return of JLT fronted Deep Purple or Yngwie. You have always been the second ersatz singer and as such are close to irrelevant. How about a Fandango reunion instead?

I didn't realize another Rainbow album had even come out until I came across Stranger In Us All several years after it was released (at 1st I thought it was just another cheapo compilation).

That was purely Ritchie in a didn't-quite-know-what-to-do-with-himself stage between exiting DP once and for all and forming BN. Candace even sings on this and some of the songs even have a BN vibe. SIUA was just a Blackmore solo album that either he or the record company decided to slap the Rainbow label on (like Seventh Star with Tony Iommi) in hopes the name would help it sell a few more copies. Sadly, the strategy worked on me at the time. A pretty weak album that I do not consider a legit Rainbow release.

Doogie is a passable-but-unremarkable vocalist, his performance is nothing to write home about on SIUA, and he certainly has NO claim as a legit Rainbow vocalist. Simple question for Doogie: name 1 song from that album would make a reunion tour setlist???

is fine with me! Graham Bonnet would kick serious ass too! I don't want to bash any Rainbow singers, I just want Ritchie to play rock once more. I can't get into the castle/serving wenches/men in tights thing. Blackmore hasn't played rock for over 10 years. We are hungry for Blackers to play some real music!!

1 What kinda crap name is BIg Noize?!?
2 He sez even though Dio's stuff is great but then he appeals to the

'sales' (!)

3 Hey Ritchie! whenever a power from the 'other side' gives you the 'ol thumbs up, it has to be the power from above and not from 'below'. Of course! Obviously!

and then again if you have Mohammed Atta flying your plane, just trust him because he has a pilot suit or outfit or whatever you call it. Uniform, that's it.

4 Why if Dio is occupied can he not front Rainbow and JLT can while he's doing 'Big Noize'??? Was he also in a band called Fandango? Now THAT'S a 'cool' name
!

Dear Sir, I think you'll find if you look at the track listing from Stranger in Us All that they do a version of " Still I'm Sad" if there was a "real" reunion with Ronnie they would almost certainly do Still I'm sad.
I have to dissagree with you about "Stranger" being a weak album. Pull it out and listen to it again. While certainly not a masterpiece, Hall of the Mountain King, Black Masquerade, Wolf to the Moon and Hunting Humans etc. are all very tasty songs with great riffs.
On another note I caught two shows from this tour and both shows rocked! One night Doogie had the flu and was periodically running off stage to puke only to return and sing his ass off. You 'gotta give the man props for that.
Long Live Rock & Roll!
