Teacher Placed On Administrative Leave For Playing HIM Music During Class
- Feb. 20, 2008
|
|
FoxCarolina.com reports that parents of some students at Excelsior Middle School said a teacher there has been playing songs about suicide and death — including HIM's "Join Me In Death" — to their children during class. The school district said sixth-grade science teacher Karen Hipp has been placed on administrative leave while they investigate the parents' claims. "These are sixth-graders listening to songs about committing suicide or killing others,' said one of the parents who did not want to be identified. "I found it very inappropriate." This parent said he first heard the music after his children brought home a CD which they say has a sampling of the songs Hipp plays in class on it. His children also told him that Hipp has downloaded several of the songs for the students to take home and listen to. One of the songs, called "Join Me In Death", is by a rock band called HIM. It has lyrics like, "We are so young. Our lives have just begun. Baby, join me in death." Another parent said although she was upset to hear the music, she said she is relieved that the superintendent took swift action. "When they're exposed to something like this, (the children) have mixed feelings about what's wrong and what's right," said another parent. School officials said they are investigating the accusations against Hipp, but they said it is too early to talk about the case. Watch a Fox Carolina video report at FoxCarolina.com.

I remember buying Maidens Powerslave on my 6th grade trip. I was listening to AC/DC, Maiden, Priest, and all kinds of shit at that age. I guess she should've let each kid decide what to listen to instead of force feeding them. I bet most would have chosen something better them Him.

I would play Vader, Krisiun and Annihilator when I would teach sound frequencies to my 8th grade science students. They thought it was cool even though most of the kids didnt know what the hell Metal was.
However, playing HIM is rather lame. She should have stuck to death or black Metal where you cant understand the lyrics anyway. Still hopes she beats the rap though seriously. Good luck teach and screw those retarded parents.

You should be more worried about whether or not a teacher is groping the kids, not what they play in study hall. Shit, those kids see more violence on TV on a daily basis than any HIM albums could deliver to them.

Something wrong with you huh? What you don't undertand is that a teacher should not download those songs for their students or make them listen to it in class. There's a big difference here between listening to those bands on their own and a TEACHER, i repeat, a teacher, downloading songs for them to go home with.
Wow i think everybody's right when they say metalheads are retards.

of shake your ass, slap a ho, pimp this and bitches that back when I was in high school, that is probably more morally reprehensible to a concerned parent than a goth rock band. Sixth grade was generic top 40 with some risque lyrics at school. I listened to White Zombie, NIN and KMFDM most of the time, this was about 14 years ago.

if your child is an idiot and is not able to tell the difference between art(books, music, visual art, everything) and real life. In sixth grade this should not be a problem. If your child in halfway intelligent and sane this kind of thing should be no problem.
If your kid is an idiot and you think something like this would have a negative impact upon him or her, then homeschool them. Then they will never see or have anything negative happen in their life, and they will turn out really well adjusted, like all home-schooled kids are, right?

What's the reason for having the songs in the first place, if any? Music can complement what you're teaching. We listened to Iron Maiden (Rime Of The Ancient Mariner) in English class and I used rock and metal for some assigments during my senior year, playing Megadeth and Savatage for one presentation. Never played death metal for the class during sixth grade though...
All we know is that a song by HIM was among the songs. There might actually be a reason for the music and it's not just a matter of playing music in class - although science isn't the first subject that would come to mind where music could be used. Maybe it was science class, maybe something else; there's nothing that says a teacher can only have one class or teach one subject.
And before anyone mentions it, grindcore/goregrind bands using medical terminology for their lyrics does NOT count for use in Biology.
Really, the only real problem I can see is that the teacher downloaded the music and passed it out to her students. Even if it's DRM free material, that doesn't make it okay to pass around, as much as people like to focus on the "free" part of the description.

I am a teacher and I played a lot of Metal to my students; You just need to be a little selective on what you play to avoid such sad events. Parents are paranoid these days and will be ready to sue anyone for anything remotely 'suspicious' about their kid's school. Sad time we live in.

I really dont see the point of all this. When I was in school, things like Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet were required reading, and there was no big deal over it. Dont get me wrong, I dont think HIM should never be played...anywhere, by anyone, ever, but I dont think a teacher should be put on administrative leave for it, at most, she should get slapped across the back of the head n be called a fucktard, but thats about it. I understand if parents are worried that their 6th grade kids could get the wrong idea about a song about suicide, but its their responsibility as parents to teach them that things like that in movies and music arent to be taken seriously.

people are so ignorant. the song "join me in death" is based on Romeo and Juliet, which is read in a lot of schools all over the world. How about we start banning all great writers from publics schools. Thats a great idea, that way all kids can grow up ignorant like their parents. seriously people go read a book. As for HIM they are an awesome band and i love them to DEATH.
