I remember picking this album up back in the day and being quite disappointed with it. It felt more like a 2nd rate KD solo album than a true MF album. In The Shadows was really the only modern MF release that could compare to the 80's material these guys put out.

I though 9 was really good but you can't beat the early stuff (Mellissa, Don't Break the Oath, and the Nuns have No Fun/The Beginning). The stuff after the reunion was too much like King Diamond songs and not enough Fate, if that makes any sense.

Well I disagree, because Hank Shermann riffage is all over Into the Unknown, Dead Again was ok, but 9 was stellar, and Time was a little like Spiders Lullabye, same kind of production too.
I still think the riffage on the Fate albums is distinct is my point.

Not the best Mercyful Fate album, but still great.

I agree with most of the comments, the thing is, and we have to accept it, the King is no longer what he used to be. He is in a clear state of decadence. Shermann is still awesome (see and listen Force of evil) at writing (as he has always been except the Fate time) and playing, but Diamond is more into this theatrical shit trying to put words or phrases where they do not belong. Musically Force of evil is a hundred times better than anything King Diamond has done over the last 10 years. Let Shermann compose and King sing (though highly unlikely to happen)! And yes, The beginning, Melissa and Don´t break the oath are really masterpieces!
