Former MÖTLEY CRÜE Producer Says NIKKI SIXX's Book Is 'Stunningly Inaccurate' - Feb. 25, 2008
Former MÖTLEY CRÜE producer Tom Werman has slammed CRÜE bassist Nikki Sixx's book "Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star" as "totally deluded" and "stunningly inaccurate."

In a letter to the New York Times, Werman took issue with Sixx's assertion that he chatted on the phone during the recording of "Theatre of Pain", "Shout at the Devil" and "Girls Girls Girls" while Sixx did all the work.

"[New York Times writer] Alan Light's description in his review of 'The Heroin Diaries' (Jan. 27) of the heroin-besotted Nikki Sixx as 'bratty and self-destructive' is on the money, but having been there and having read the book, I would go with 'totally deluded' or perhaps 'stunningly inaccurate,'" Werman wrote.

"As the producer of three MÖTLEY CRÜE albums over a four-year period, I found Sixx's allegation that in the recording studio he did 'all the work' with Vince Neil's vocals while I chatted idly on the phone not only humorous but pure fiction.

"If this distortion of reality is the result of Sixx's past heroin habit, then his diary is truly nothing more than a pipe dream, and the events to which this book refers may simply be the needle-induced fantasies of an attention-starved junkie."

This is not the first time Werman has clashed with one of his former clients over his contributions — or lack thereof — to recordings which have gone on to enjoy multi-platinum success.

Werman — who left his lifetime career as a heavy metal producer with 13 platinum and 10 gold records to his credit (including those by MÖTLEY CRÜE and TWISTED SISTER), to open Stonover Bed and Breakfast in Massachusetts with his wife, Susan, in July 2002 — famously traded verbal jabs with TWISTED SISTER in 2004 over their comments regarding his collaboration with the group on the double-platinum "Stay Hungry" album.

I have no reason to trust Nikki Sixx over this guy, but it seems that if he has a history of arguing with bands over his contributions, maybe he is the one who is starved for attention. I mean, he left the music busines to open a MOTHER FUCKING bead and breakfast!!! Maybe he had to do something else besides producing because bands knew he was a dick and didn't want to work with him anymore.

I thought Twisted's problem with Werman was only about how poor sounding Stay Hungry was/is, not an issue of him not working very hard on it.

Twisteds gripe seemed to be as much about sour grapes on Mendoza's part because he wanted to produce the albums.

Sixx isn't complaining about the end product, he's trying to take credit for the end product.

Sixx is a dope-fiend fuckin douche who seems to have a rather high opinion of himself.

Say what, dude? Those CDs were mastered back in the vinyl days. They didn't sound good on CD because they were never mastered for CD. And half the time the modern remasterings suck, too, because all they do is crank the levels so high that it distorts the subtleties.

I'd take a Werman vinyl of Shout At The Devil before I'd take a modern no-name remastering.

I personally think the TS album production is killer. TS did tyr to redo this album recently with "better sounds and production techniques" according to them but failed.

The MC album is awful, I agree on that, but hearing them live this guy did an amazing job.

Werman also produced Stryper's "Against The Law", Poison's "Open Up and Say Ahh", Babylon AD's "Nothing Sacred" and the "Rockstar" Soundtrack.......All great sounding records.

Nikki's been known for exaggerating, if not fabricating events to benefit himself. To his credit, he's one smart dude. Of course he'd talk about how much work he did; it's what his fans want to hear.

Oh, and Nikki, did you forget about how you used to show up to the studio with grocery bags full of candy because you were crashing, or how you used to have your bass tuned for you.

Yeah...

Nikki is a legend in his own mind when it comes to his contribution to the music world. I laughed out loud when I read in his book that he wondered why people like Keith Richards did not call him back to get together to write some songs.

I tend to believe Tom's version. Nikki just wants all the credit, too!! The attention and money, together, aren't good enough for him!!

Let's remember one thing: Nikki was as high as a kite in the studio (except for Theater, I suppose), NOT Tom...

Tales always grow taller in these autobiographies. Writers' stories get embellished or entirely made up for the purposes of selling books and themselves!!

You're absolutely right! The tales have to grow taller in order to sell books & movies to the "gossip starved" public.

If anyone's really curious about who's telling the truth...ask yourself this...why'd they have him (Tom) produce not 1, 2 but THREE albums if he were so, uh, unproductive?? As they say, actions speak louder...

Sixx is a lying sack!

Yea, He didnt do that great on In Color..BUT..He did do a KICK ASS job on
Heaven Tonite, and Dream Police..And those albums are what really got the band going..Sure Live at Budokan was their breakthru here in the USA..And Im sure at that time If they were really upset about the way Werman produced..Epic wouldve listened...And when they did change producers..1980 George Martin, Then Steve Albini, Todd Rundgren, Ted Templeman...All GREAT Producers by the way..Cheap Trick never had the same success..
(Not counting the Lap of Luxury album..And Busted produced by Richie Zito)

Dude, Nikki's book is horseshit. He's trying to peddle that crap about how while he was a ruinous heroin junkie, he kept a detailed diary. And preserved it for years. Then called in his friends to actually corroborate his bullshit -- yeah, i believe Tommy Lee. It's like Nikki isn't special enough being a past junkie, he's gotta be a SuperJunkie: he shoots up, he writes, he files carefully, he produces records, he rocks.

This is dreamland bullshit, people. Werman's right to call him out.

Please SOMEONE listen to Nikki and give him a hug. He was on heroin, walked on water, rose on the 3rd day, and even found time to engineer Vince's vocals. He's crying over Tom Werman now? Let it go junkie. Time has passed. Relish in your new found riches. When are you going on Oprah and Dr Phil? Soon right? I used to like Nikki.
I think Tom Werman is accurate: "attention starved junkie". Just do anything to get him to shut up. Why do fucking junkies have to tell the tale...over and ....over...and over. It's fucking OVER DUDE!!

And Twisted Sister RE-recorded the album and it wasn't successful....hmm....sounds like Stephen King and his dislike of Jack Nicholson and Stanley Kubrick. I think the point is to bitch WHEN it's happening, not twenty plus years later. It's trendy to relive your 80's glories these days. Exciting...well, no it isn't. It's beat.

I can't help but find this topic slightly futile and here's why...

Fans are almost always biased and defensive when it comes to bad press targeting their idols, so taking the opposing view to a fan will always be a lose-lose situation...

I think there may be elements of truth to some of the comments here, but making judgment calls on who he is out of the spotlight isn't very fair.

Wherever there is a controversial topic re: a famous artist in the entertainment industry, the first thing the media does is it begins to report more controversial situations for them. Then they [media] work overtime to fill tabloid rags with a million different stories and will continue to while the public are willing to look at, read and blog about. It's all free publicity. If Nikki isn't telling the truth, I'm fairly certain the press would be all over that, which they're not.
