OZZFEST Morphing Into Two-Day 'Destination Festival'? - Feb. 26, 2008
Ozzfest, the long-running touring metal package, is rumored to be morphing into a two-day "destination festival" in Dallas. There has been no official word yet on what format Ozzfest will take or who will be on the bill.

The rumors come in the wake of this year's arrival of the metal-oriented Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour, which will play 30 North American amphitheaters during July and August, the time when Ozzfest is traditionally making its rounds.

Last year's Ozzfest offered free admission, with fans acquiring tickets mostly through sponsoring web sites. But the acts were not paid either, which resulted in a decidedly less than impressive main stage lineup. The Mayhem trek has already robbed Ozzfest of two potential main-stage heavyweights in DISTURBED and SLIPKNOT, with fan favorites DRAGONFORCE and MASTODON also taking part in the Mayhem tour.

OZZY OSBOURNE is likely to headline Ozzfest as a solo act again, since his BLACK SABBATH bandmates are busy with their HEAVEN AND HELL offshoot.

The Mayhem tour is being co-produced by Kevin Lyman, who has the successful Warped and Taste of Chaos packages on his resume.

Not that I am the biggest fans of Ozzfest, or a lot of the bands that play there, but "decidedly less than impressive" main stage act? I know there were a lot of kids pretty happy about the main stage last year. I can't say I was one of them, but there were definitely some.

bands on the mayhem tour. hope they hit london, ont.

i know it's slipknot's tour. so having them headline is a ok with me. they can sell out venues already themselves.

BUT MACHINE HEAD should be direct support and have over an hour to play as they are the best band on that tour.

give disturbed the second stage, or toss them off the bill.
yeah, just toss them off the bill entirely.

I saw this coming after last year, Ozzfest has been pretty shitty since the first 5 years. But, look at lollapalooza, it's huge now. Being a 3 day fest in one city. Maybe this could revive Ozzfest...

Let it be....Let it be...Let it be...Let it be!! Some words of wisdom ozzfest staff, wuit while you're still a tiny tiny bit ahead of doing this to us!! Just end it, call it a day whatever!! Having been to every Ozzfest, its a shame to let this happen to it. Either Get Black Sabbath, Slayer, King Diamond, Nevermore, Testament, Overkill, Into Eternity, Dillinger Escape Plan, Steal the Red Chord from the mayhem tour, Pay metallica to do a great setlist, also get Maiden, Priest Play the world with it and Let it rest in Peace....If youre not gonna do this dont do ANYTHING!!

I'm not even an Ozzy/Sharon hater, but maybe it is karma catching up. The chips are definitely down:

-The once unstoppable Ozzfest couldn't even fill venues for free last year.

-Bands like Slipknot and Disturbed who made their names on the Ozzfest stages have abandoned the tour for the competition.

-The much-abused 'other guys in Black Sabbath' who seem to have been trotted out at a moment's notice when ticket sales were down while Ozzy refused to even consider singing anything more than the ten songs he remembers have run off with Dio to do something new, fresh and successful.

I love Ozzy for all the great years and I don't hate Sharon, but it seems like a lot of how they've dealt with people through the years has caught up to them. You can't make that many enemies and never receive any comeuppance.

Wonder how this will play out.

Does it really matter about Ozzfest? That quickly became an event for non-music people who want to go out and "rawk" once a year to bands whose names they recognize or "I went because I got a free ticket" -- which is usually the second thing one hears in reference to the event.

Didn't it start out as a one-day event in California or somewhere like in 1996? Then the next year it was a full-tour. I guess things come full-circle.

I guess the thinking is if Rocklahoma succeeded, maybe there's something to that. The problem with that is:

a)Rocklahoma was successful on a much smaller level - on it's worst day an average Ozzfest show does bigger numbers than Rocklahoma did. It was just impressive because it was bands who rarely get a big crowd and, well, it was in Oklahoma.

b)A 'destination event' means people will travel from far and wide to make it a success. Travel and lodging costs money. Rocklahoma is a festival of 80's bands - their audience are old enough and rich enough to make that commitment. When your fan base are 14 year olds that are usually too strapped for cash to even buy tickets, how are they ever going to also manage travel, food, hotels, etc.?

The days of Ozzfest touring the country are over but they were some wonderful years!

Thanks Ozzy, tell your wife to stop shopping and spending all the $ and enjoy retirement or try something else. You deserve it and it is time for you to stop. That last album sucked.

don't do it in the summer.

Someone should put on a metal version of Coachella in one of the southern/southwestern states right about the same time of year. Easter week, perhaps? Said promoter would be able to get bands before all the big Euro festivals start. Get some old-school legends, current big shots, up&comers...well, one can wish.

A two day fest wouldn't be a good idea where the venue is. Basically it's in the hood. I remember seeing The Who on the It's Hard tour and people were parking in the front yard of the residents. I wasn't too hip on parking my car in a yard where chickens were running around and then leaving my keys with the dude...

Shattered73 has it right...you can't expect people to come up with that kind of scratch these days. The economy is shitty, period.Whether you're talking about your 14 year-old fan base or blue-collar,hard-working people who just want to go see a rock show.I think the best you can hope for is two or three bands for around $60...Everyone will clown me for this, but last summer I saw Poison,RATT and Dokken for $65 all fees and charges included-not bad. I also paid $100+for VH-had to see them with Dave.
