It's Official: TIM 'RIPPER' OWENS Is The New YNGWIE MALMSTEEN Singer - Feb. 26, 2008
As BLABBERMOUTH.NET exclusively reported earlier today, former JUDAS PRIEST/ICED EARTH singer Tim "Ripper" Owens has now officially joined YNGWIE MALMSTEEN's band. The legendary Swedish guitarist announced the news to the Guitar World staff today when he came to the magazine's New York headquarters for an exclusive interview and photo shoot.

Malmsteen and Owens are hard at work on a new CD, which is currently scheduled for a July release.

Owens and Malmsteen previously collaborated on a cover of OZZY OSBOURNE's "Mr. Crowley", which appeared on the "Flying High Again: The World's Greatest Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne", released in March 2006 via Magick Records. Listen to the track on YouTube.

Owens recently worked with QUEENSRŸCHE guitarist Michael Wilton on demo recordings for the new SOULBENDER album (Wilton's side project). One of the demo cuts can currently be heard on the SOULDBENDER MySpace page.

Owens's predecessor, Doogie White, was a member of Yngwie Malmsteen's band for six and a half years. Doogie joined Malmsteen's band in September 2001 and recorded two albums with the legendary Swedish guitarist: "Attack" (2002) and "Unleash the Fury" (2005).

"I had a long chat with Yngwie today and it is clear that he wants to move musically in a new direction," Doogie said in a statement that was released to BLABBERMOUTH.NET earlier today. "It's great news that he will be expanding on his undoubted talents both as a writer and guitarist. I just want to thank, publicly, Yngwie and the many band members past and present that I have worked with. It seems appropriate that we started our working relationship in South America in September 2001 and finished in South America in December 2007. Now, anyone need a singer??"

I'll definitely check this record out. Ripper is an amazing vocalist though I hope he still has time to do a new Beyond Fear record.

This guy always rebounds from a raw deal. The only bad thing is he went from one egomaniac's band to another. As much as people hate Jon, I actually think Yngwie is worse.

still sucks that ripper is not in iced earth anymore. Jon didn't take care of ripper like he should of. but I doubt Yngwie will treat him any better.

Ripper made Priest worth listening too.
he made iced earth sound better.
and im sure he is going to make Yngwie's album better than it was going to be...Sorry Doogie Nothing personal.

The great musicians...but what about doogie? he said Yngvie and him had a chat...interesting. but Yngvie will never have a permanent vocalist because he's a solo artists and not a band and the vocals are only secondary to his ego...ahem...guitar playing. and Doogie said he's going in a new direction? meaning he doesn't want to work with Doogie anymore for what reason? Yngive is NOT going to change his style...it's pretty much been the direction he does since day one and for him to change wouldn't work. too bad none of his records get any airplay after 1990...

I hope this never happens. Why does Ripper Owens feel that he cannot put together his own band? I dont understand this move AT ALL. The styles here do not mesh. I guess it is possible that Ripper's vocals could keep the crowd alive until the Yngwie solos end, but I doubt it. Yngwie can wear a crowd out with all that virtuoso bullshit. Tim, if you read this, you are an idiot. DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

"If I went out and joined somebody like YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. Well, you know what you're getting into — you're not joining a band, you're just joining a project to jump in and sing with him real quick. It's a whole different experience. I thought I was getting into a band and I was promised different things, and it all worked out until now. And I think everybody does know that it's the Jon Schaffer thing. It's a revolving door with everybody, and that's a cool thing, and Jon has built this thing from the ground up."

I still can't figure out if he sounded so much like halford why he never did on the priest records he did with them.I know he didn't write the songs but to me he just sounded like all the other grunters and growlers out there. as for malmsteen he is way overrated and the only good stuff he ever did was Joe Lynn Turner. I know to commercial for you true believers he is still a great vocalist who can write great hard melodic songs. oh that's why you hate them because he is melodic. I thought doogie sounded good on the rainbow cd he did.would like to hear more of him in that vain but since blackmore doesn't rock anymore probably not gonna happen.

You just answered your own question - songs.

I don't know of Owens' writing skills, but the fact that he hasn't pushed his own songwriting to date suggests where his talents lie (and where they don't).

Great singers will always have opportunties to join established bands.

Great songwriters get to be the boss. EXPECIALLY if they can also sing.

Odyssey will always be my fave Yngwie. The songs were all distinct and there were great hooks, even the more aorish/hair ones. Reason is probably because JLT got to do some songwriting, giving it an edge over ones where Yngwie dominates- and some of the songs like Riot in the Dungeon and Rising Force rip everything else to shreds. Hell, I even like Heaven Tonight.

It's a fact that you can have all the talent in the world but have no heart or soul. When I think of individuals like that both Yngwie & Tim Owens come to mind. Owens done nothing for Iced Earth or Judas Priest except get those bands back together. I would have rather seen him stay with his own band to see if he does have any real talent but I guess we will wait a little longer while he replaces yet another singer. Personally Yngwie hasn't done anything for me since the JLT years and before that with Jeff Scott Soto. Oh yes I did like Micheal Vescara. Yngwie was alright with Dio on their cover of Aerosmith - Dream on.
I don't think enough people care about either Yngwie or Owens enough for this to last so now we can wait to see who the Ripper sings for next.
How about Quiet Riot ?
