'True Norwegian Black Metal' Book Due In May; More Details Revealed - Feb. 26, 2008
American documentary photographer Peter Beste's book "True Norwegian Black Metal" will be issued on May 15 via Vice Books.

In the last two decades a bizarre and violent musical subculture called black metal has emerged in Norway. It has its roots in a heady blend of splatter movies, heavy metal music, Satanism, Pagan mythology and adolescent angst. In the early-mid 1990s, members of this extremist underground committed murder, burned down medieval wooden churches, and desecrated graveyards. What started as juvenile frenzy came to symbolize the start of a war against Christianity, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of mainstream society.

Peter Beste has spent the last eight years working in the milieu of this insulated and secretive community. Beste's access and insight has been absolutely without precedent, resulting in an amazing photographic journey. Beste has earned the respect and trust of this impenetrable, suspicious and often elitist community. With each visit Beste saw more, photographed more and eventually accumulated enough material for this book. "True Norwegian Black Metal" is a visual testimonial to this subculture. Peter Beste and editor Johan Kugelberg have created a unique photographic narrative that explores black metal from a truly visceral perspective.

With extensive contributions from the personal archive of Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen, publisher of the original Norwegian black metal publication Slayer magazine, a unique opportunity is here presented to see original artifacts and ephemera from this secluded rock community, and to read accounts of these events in the words of the people who were actually there at the time.

"True Norwegian Black Metal" offers confrontational live performance photographs of a savage subculture set alongside the stark beauty and natural allure of a landscape often shrouded in darkness.

The book is comprised of:

* 160 pages of photographs of the following bands/individuals: Nocturno Culto and Fenriz of DARKTHRONE; Necrobutcher, Hellhammer, Blasphemer, and Maniac of MAYHEM; Samoth of EMPEROR; Frost of SATYRICON; ENSLAVED; Abbath of IMMORTAL; Gaahl, Infernus, King, and Kvitrafn of GORGOROTH; Nattefrost of CARPATHIAN FOREST; 1349; DIMMU BORGIR; ILDJARN; AURA NOIR; and many more

* Interviews/quotes from Frost (1349), Abbath (IMMORTAL), Fenriz (DARKTHRONE), Gaahl (GORGOROTH)

* Essay by authors and Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen, publisher of the original Norwegian black metal publication Slayer magazine, including 32 pages of original artifacts, photographs, ephemera, and personal accounts by black metal's key figures from Krisiansen's personal archive."

Beste has scheduled a photo exhibition beginning May 8 at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City, with London, Stockholm, Oslo, Berlin, Los Angeles shows to follow.

I realise that it's a photography book, but $38 (on Amazon) is a bit much for this. How many professionally-shot photos of guys in corpse paint and funny clothes in front of churches do I need to see?

You dont like it, fine. But that does not mean is shitty music.
Do yourself a favor, do a research and listen some good Black Metal. There is plenty of it. I am trying to name some bands here for you, but there are too many. You should start with the middle and latest albums from consecrated bands, so is not too raw for you. Bands like Emperor, Satyricon, Immortal, Dissection.... and then make your choices. If you are a metalhead I really doubt that you won't enjoy Volcano or Damned In Black.

Exactly, not to mention the bands a little bit OUTSIDE the black metal "box" that have done some really cool avant garde shit- Arcturus, Ulver, Vintersorg, Opeth- Yes I said Opeth because I would consider the first two albums sort of an extension of a hybrid black/death sound- the dark lyrics and harmonic minor (as well as other riffage) riffage was closer to black metal in some ways than say, Dismember- PLUS they were signed to Century Black when the first two albums were reissued in the states back in 99.

Point is, Black Metal other than Tech Death and some other genres has pushed the boundaries of metal further than most others.

Black Metal vs. Rap all-stars fight to the death in urban US ghettos and Norwegian fjords:

"In this corner, wearing corpsepaint and brandishing a broadsword that would make the dorks in Manowar green with envy..... GAAHL!"

"And in this corner, wearing gold teeth and cornrows and packin' some serious 9mm heat, it's the TIGER WOOD OF THE HOOD!"

..............and those guys did it for entertainments sake, to put on a good show, to shock.
Venom done it best because they never forgot this, these people don't know what they are and take it all way too seriously.
Some Burzum material is interesting though even though the guy is a fruitloop!

I don't normally criticize people for their opinions if they are educated but I'm sorry... You are a fucking moron! Do you play guitar? Do you sing? Try tremolo picking a 16th note melody at 210 or 220 bpm (That's Beats Per Minute for an idiot like you).

Ihsahn from Emperor does both at the same time and is an amazing guitar player with great clean vocals featured on the later albums, and his solo material. The same was for the guitar playing of Jon from Dissection R.I.P.

I bet that you couldn't even master one riff from either...

Emperor are hardly black metal, maybe they were on their "Wrath of the Tyrant" demo.
Dissection are melodeath, their satanic themes don't make them black metal.

Impaled Nazarene's first five albums are really cool, now they're complete crap.
They turned from a punk/grind/bm band (Or Industrial Cyber Punk Sado Metal as they used to call their music) to a cheesy, ridiculous third-rate Children of Bodom clone.
Fuck them.

COMMENT | Opeth are melodeath, not black metal

Ignorant blabbermouthers strike again!
Ulver's third album is the only bm album they released, Vintersorg and Arcturus are not and never were black metal, screechy vocals are not enough to call yourself black metal.
Nice.

If you think that In the Nightshade by Emperor can't be classified as a Black Metal record then I don't know what you are smoking. Maybe it's a little too polished by your standards, but that's subjective in nature. It is what it is...

Maybe you should just get off your snotty fucking high horse! I too could of made a reference to Nattens just so I seemed all knowing like you apparently are.

I listed Ihsahn as an example simply because he is one of the most prominent examples of an accomplished FORMER Black Metal musician. One of the earlier posters made reference to Jon and I simply backed up his statement so suck my dick.

Happy now you fuckin penis?

please excuse me, I don't have time for this 'couse I'm about to put on my corpsepaint and roam into the Norwegian woods with my fellow black-metal friends. Tonight we are gonna hunt down elks with our bare hands and drink the blood.
This is what the average Portuguese black-metal fan believes we Norwegians do in our spare time....in fact we are doing the same dull things as everybody else do. Picking up the children at school, make dinner, play Yatzy and end up half-asleep in front of the TV...but we like really loud music....

Opeth were black metal, I just said they were sort of associated with the scene early on, which may make some of the snobs squirm, hehe. They were on Century Black, which was kind of a failed experiment on Century Medias part but I thought the sampler with the match in the cd case was a nice touch!

I also think that anyone who says Emperor weren't black metal is drinking some strange water!

Enslaved are one thing, but Emperor were definitely black metal, though maybe not their last two albums.

Just making a point that Black metal had a lot of offshoots and influence on making metal more interesting and avant garde. If it weren't for their groundbreaking work we would all be listening to brutal grind bands now, or power metal (though to its credit death metal did have gothic/doom and tech metal to bring the diversity).
