LARS ULRICH Says New METALLICA Album 'Should' Be Released In September
- Mar. 10, 2008
|
|
According to NME.com, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has announced that the group's follow-up to 2003's "St Anger" will be released this September. The band has been recording the as-yet-untitled record in Los Angeles with producer Rick Rubin. Speaking to IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson on the March 7 edition of Bruce's weekly BBC 6 Music radio show, Ulrich said: "We're just finishing up a record, we've got six weeks left and it should be out in September, that's the idea right now." He added: "I like what I've heard so far. I'm not one of the great sellers of 'the new record's the best thing we've ever done and it shits all over the last record and it's way heavier'. I'm not a great believer in all that horseshit." "I like it and I'm one of METALLICA's harshest critics. So far it feels pretty good but there's still plenty of time to fuck it up, so let's see what happens." Listen to a replay of "The Bruce Dickinson Friday Rock Show" featuring the Lars Ulrich interview at BBC.co.uk. Lars recently told Revolver magazine that the group's new material "is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," adding, "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes." Ulrich also said that the album has more in common with some of the group's '80s releases than more recent offerings like "St. Anger" and "Load". Ulrich wouldn't agree that the yet-to-be-titled disc is a full-blown return to the past, saying, "I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, 'What the fuck? Lars lied to us!' But it feels that way to me." The drummer also revealed that producer Rick Rubin, working with the band for the first time, wanted METALLICA to use classic efforts like "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" as "reference points" for its new songs.

Maybe they should be like the "mainman" I mean Dave Mustaine and get on the internets and kiss all of your asses and do interviews every fuckin day and give you nicknames like "Doogies" and then if the music is shit none of you kids will care? The "it's all about me" emo kids out there don't like Metallica because they do shit theie way and don't give a fuck about what you think. You can't handle that.

Also whether or not it is any good, there are millions of middle school girls and similar mentalities who will buy it.
It is going to be a commercial success just like St. Angel

I have faith in this album for 2 reasons.
1)Rick Ruben is producing it, and he's done some pretty bad ass work in the past. I don't know of one album I've heard of his that I didn't like.
2)I just don't think Metallica has the balls to put out another shitty album. These guys pretty much started the world of heavy, yet clean and crisp distortion, and the crossing of classical and blues lead work. They have to know what's at stake here too. After as many fans have shunned them in the past, I'm pretty sure they realise they will lose most, if not all of their die hard fan base if this one bombs.
All I can say is "good luck".

Listen to St. Anger and then listen to MOP or any album talica album from the 80's. St. Anger has more technical riffage and more originality than the old albums. On MOP they used blastbeats on Battery and Damage Inc. (I am not sure what a blastbeat is but I think it has something to do with a drum being blasted pretty hard), they didn't need blastbeats on St. Anger so they used snarebeats to replace it.

Wow this has turned into an interesting thread. Personally being the reason for me palm muting playing guitar of course Metallica are a bigger influence, but I still love the first six or seven Bathory plus Blood on ice and parts of the last two.
very different bands though, dont think they can be compared. One thing is for certain, Quorthon didnt have too many fingers in the pie pulling him to do certain things. He did things the way he wanted to, even if it meant doing beatles and grunge style stuff (solo albums) or bad quasi industrial thrash stuff (Octagon?)
I think Metallica are more of an organization at this point, rather than a band, at least that is the impression that I got from watching Some Kind of Monster.
However I will say that the interesting thing is is that I didn't mind much of Saint Anger. It was kind of raw and fucked up and I quite enjoy that at times..
Np: Hellhammer Demon Entrails.

History of Blastbeats.
Debatable first usage:
First DRI album, song: "Makes No Sense" (still one of my fave albums btw).
Beastie Boys (when they were punk): (song I can't recall).
Siege: Drop Dead (some of the songs?)
Death: forgot the demo name, but it had the DRI drummer Eric Brecht- this may have laid the foundation for incorporating blast beats into death metal-
as far as black metal, I can't recall who mixed it first, but Mayhem (despite the aversion they had towards grind and death) were definitely one of the first.
Excuse my inaccuracies that are possible, I'm a bit sloppy at metal history 101 today.

intothenow,
i have two words for you.
FUCK YOU!
Pantera did change their style dumbass, have you even heard their early albums?
GLAM FUCKING METAL.
by 1990 they had gone to power groove; and the same for vulgar,...
on fbd they just kept getting heavier and the groove improved even more...
trendkill started employing a southern feel to it with more soft/acoustic and soulful parts here and there, and 101 proof was a fucking bombshell...
reinventing the steel was them simply getting back to Pantera fashion.
Seriously, FUCK YOU.
Honestly; I like metallica's old stuff like anyone else; but in my opinion Pantera are far superior in the fact that they never truely SOLD OUT. Yeah, phil got on heroin and all that shit and they became a fairly popular band.. but they didn't become another Metallica Black/Load Album fiasco...
regardless of who came first; I like Pantera simply because they stood for not being a fake ass band, and making sure the fan is always first.
If any of you disagree i don't give a fuck, it's my opinion.

I honestly don't expect Metallica will live up to their first four albums again, but I sincerely hope they can and will make an honest and sincere effort in delivering something alot more in common with those albums. Because its make or break time for them, when it comes to preventing total alienation of their fanbase from the pre-Black era, a rather substantial number have jumped ship already I feel.
I know Rick Rubin has done killer work in the past, and knows great metal and music in general when he hears it, so thats a glimmer of hope. I'm sure he knows Metallica's 80's material is generally what their best known and appreciated for, so he's probably pushing the band more in that direction. We can only hope, but for myself this will be the last straw if they fail to deliver something decent along the lines of their thrash roots.
Anyhow my anticipation is far greater for Testament this year.
To each his own...

Any full fledged, red blooded metal fan to call Pantera's 1988 classic opus Power Metal, "glam". To this day, its my favorite Pantera album, with its thrashy moments and killer soloing. Its somewhere in between "Painkiller" and a Testament album, a Priest worshipping power metal classic. "I am the Night" wasn't too shabby either, but they ditched the singer for Anselmo and the rest was history. i wish theyd remaster/rerelease Power Metal. Other than the cover, theres nothing embarrassing about it.

The majority of you inconsequential fucktards are hilarious... will you ever stop repeating yourselves? This album will be good whether it sounds like it came straight out of the 80's or if it sounds like load or reload, You do realize metal is not the only genre of music that is good? Every time a band changes and no longer fits into your small ignorant frames of mind you bitch about it, 9 out of every 10 bands morph their sound as they age - Sabbath - Megadeth - opeth- machinehead- to name a few, go study any band that's been together for any significant amount of time very rarely do they sound the same as when they started out, in any genre..and that doesn't make them a sellout although you label it as such. People change and the music changes with them that's natural progression, it's human nature, we never like the same things our entire lives, our favorite bands today will not be our favorite bands in 10 years, so why should you expect musicians to be any different? Different experiences different ways of living life different relationships etc etc etc I would hate metallica if every single album sounded the same but They don't that's a positive thing not negative. If I feel like tearing someone apart I can listen to master of puppets If I'm having a mellow day I can listen to Load or reload if I'm going to sleep I can throw S@M. yet Every time a band goes mainstream people bitch, Well Music is meant to be enjoyed no one is entitled to a certain band or form of music more then anyone else, That's the point of listening to it so it can be enjoyed(by everyone) Yet the second everyone starts liking something original fans and people alike hate it... Never before have metal fans been so predictible it's fucking pathetic, If this where the 80's all of you would be fucking hair metal fans.
The thought that any of you can actually say they should give it up already shows how blindingly arrogant you are...this band created some of the greatest metal rifts songs and solos of all time, they can make and release music for as long as they damn well please.
Oh and Stop comparing it to chinese democracy they started recording this album last year chinese democracy has been in the works for over a decade..Theres a big fucking difference there.

For all the metallica bashers out there, can i ask something? Do you listen to classic metal? Metallica seems to be the only metal band that gets criticised for straying so far away from the music that rules
I mean, cmon...
black sabbath have released nothing but pure shit for the past 30 or so years
iron maiden went all weird for a little while after somewhere in time
Megadeth released nothing but garbage after countdown to extinction, up until they reformed then they got better
Slayer went all nu metal and never fully returned after that one album (i dont remember the name, which is as it probably should be)
Machine head went full blown nu metal for two albums because they couldnt write something that would compare to their first two albums (their later albums are on the right track though)
and yeah, metallica released four classic albums, one decent album for a commercial album (whoever bashes the black album should also bash countdown to extinction by megadeth), two weird blues rock albums, and.... ummmm... something (aka st. anger)
all in all, i cant wait for this album to come out... in my opinion, metallica reached rock bottom with st anger not only can they get themselves out of that without digging the hole deeper, but the errors, in hindsight, are pretty easy to pick out (shitty drums, crappy mixing, stupid vocal range and unimpressive song structures)
so bring on september, 'tallica will show all you nay sayers that they still have a bit of fuel left in the tank
