IRON MAIDEN To Release 'Somewhere Back In Time' Collection - Mar. 11, 2008
British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN will release a very special album on May 12 via EMI Records to chart the first decade of the band's extraordinary career. The CD celebrates the essence of the current tour by featuring most of the essential tracks from the band's first seven studio albums and one live album, recorded between 1980 and 1989, and is aptly entitled "Somewhere Back In Time".

In an unprecedented move to let younger fans hear, understand and appreciate the quality of these recordings EMI launch the unique Somewhere Best In Sound whereby the curious/adventurous can download the entire album without charge from www.ironmaiden.com as a high-quality audio file (WMA) which is a typically powerful 320 kbps. Fans will then be able to listen to the entire album at their leisure three times before the download expires. The listener is then given a simple option to upgrade and purchase the album as a full traditional DRM-free download (so they can then copy or do as they like with the album).

Manager Rod Smallwood explains the thinking behind this innovative move: "MAIDEN have a huge catalogue that is highly treasured by fans and media alike. However we recognise that our ever-increasing fan base is very young and can't be expected to know all the earlier albums, which is why we have put this collection together for them. Many of our fans weren't even born when the original albums were first released, although amazingly they seem to know all the lyrics when they sing along with the band at our concerts! We also recognise that 'albums' as such have become unfashionable to many over recent years with TV-generated pop artists stringing a couple of 'hit' singles together with filler tracks and releasing them as a quick fill album which disappoints and quickly becomes dated. So this is both an introduction to the band's recording history and a chance for young fans to try a full-length MAIDEN album and realise they're getting the real deal!

"We wanted to give the kids of today a fair chance of hearing the music as we would have first heard and experienced it in our day when checking it out in a record shop — top-quality sound, in their own time and in an environment of their own choosing so they are able to absorb the depth and worth of the music and lyrics that make IRON MAIDEN the phenomenon they are. What better way to use modern means and a very high quality download! Sadly the WMA (Windows Media Audio) isn't compatible with Macs or iPods but we are confident that our young fans are adept and fluent with modern technology and we will post simple instructions on our website for any that need guidance."

Looks like the Paul Di Anno songs are live versions sung by Bruce. Is the band tired of paying Di Anno royalties?

I think it has to do more with Bruce being the normal, recognized singer of the band and it might be a shock to have some other due on the album considering what theyre trying to do with it. I just wish it was more of their really long epic songs like Alexander The Great and Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.

Royalties do not depend on the performer, but on the writers / the owners of the intellectual property. Harry is living pretty well of the fact that some 80% of all IM tunes are credited to him. What a surprise he has credits on every single track ever since VXI.

...will look like on that one - it would be the ONLY reason for a long-time diehard to purchase it... and even that would be a stretch... i have all my 'earlier' maiden albums enclosed in an Ed head... which i bought as a box set probably 10 years ago to replace my cassette collections... one of my most prized box sets! I grew up and LOVE Maiden, but fuck guys..how many greatest hits do you need!

I wonder if they are stuck in a contract that requires this as I wouldn't think Bruce would intentionally spread his legs and take it like he was in a T.J. donkey bar without having his balls contractually in a vice. This makes how many greatest hits records now (with mostly the same tracks)?

Iron Maiden is like KISS now. For the past decade they've released a new "Best of" or "Greatest Hits" collection or a "Live" album practically every year.

If they really want to go "Back Somewhere In Time" maybe they should do what they did back in 80's and release a brand-new album every year. All of which have become CLASSICS!!

Without Derek Riggs artwork Iron Maiden would have been just another good band. They're actually pretty dorky without all their "eddie" stuff. You got a 5'4" singer that has a strainy voice, a bass player who lip-synchs the words and 3 lead guitarist that added up together have almost as much charisma as Mick Mars.

Easily the most overrated metal band of all time.

Well said. If it wasnt for Eddie they would not be as big as they are. They are very overrated.

I personally dont think they have done anything that great since "Powerslave". 24 YEARS AGO!

The best Maiden was with Dianno. Back then they were hungry, pissed off and brutal. The first 3 Bruce albums were great too. But with Bruce its a formula. With Paul it was organic, and real.

I didn't really like the track list, but it obviously is an album for young fans that are new to the band, so that they can get into Maiden. I of course would buy their studio albums instead. I'm just happy they didn't do anything as EVIL as putting a "special un-released bonus track" on it that would have forced me into buying it! I hate when bands do that! THAT is a Gene Simmons trick, this though is just for showing the younger generations the light.

um,ok? so the reason people love iron maiden has nothing to do with great songwriting, amazing bass playing, instantly recognizable style, great vocals....nooo its because they had a zombie on the cover.

every band influenced by them, everyone from helloween to death to metallica, it was just the zombie they were influenced by. okay.

when i first heard maiden i had no idea who eddie was. i was impressed by awesome vocals, a tight band, loads of style, great melodies, great riffs, and so on. the zombie i didnt even know existed until later.

yes, eddie played a part in their success, he cemented their style, he probably made a lot of people at the record store take a listen. but you cant sell a heavy metal band with a picture. and they wouldnt be consistently ranked as one of the most talented and most influential and just best bands ever if all they had was a picture.

dude, how can i express this to you. its not your job to attempt to re-write history 30 years after the fact in the way that you best see fit.

Seriously, what the fuck have you ever done? I assume that you are a musician, why don't you post your music, and let's see how it stands up.

The fucking website clearly states, that this is FOR ALL OF THE NEW FANS....who might not have the earlier stuff, so it's a good sampler to see if they want to buy the earlier albums or not.

Think, is it that hard to think?

Iron Maiden are bigger than they have ever been on a WORLDWIDE scale, so that means in all of these countries around the world, because yes dodos, the album will be sold, AROUND THE WORLD....and in all of the countries with young, and new fans, they can buy this.....

Maiden aren't trying to sell this to you, you old bloated whiners.

Also, I am 40, and have seen Maiden 12 times, and I don't buy everything, but I love this band. It's a given you don't need all of their live stuff except for some essentials, and all of their best of's.....but again this is for the new fans.

What artist has had the chance to experience a second renaissance, like Iron Maiden has?

I say good for them, they earned......and they don't overcharge on thier ticket prices either.

I won't buy it, I don't need it, but maybe some new Maiden fan in Brazil or India might.

Whatever.....you'll still complain for no reason, other than you're miserable.

up the irons....

It is always great to see that younger people are into Maiden too! I think the songlist is great for the younger metalheads to get to know Maiden. Maiden is a band where the age of their fans will always vary between very young and very old! That is a good thing! Why are some crybabies over here complaining about it? Metalheads are always capable to buy what they want to hear of want to buy. Same as KISS. If fans want to buy something and they have the money for it, what is the problem????

yes, they want to reach out to young new fans, but there are already best of's out there that exist! if the copout is that it focuses on the specific albums that they will be playing from for the tour, i think it's a weak argument...

and for those kids that are going to figure out how to use the wma's for the mac and ipods, they are also likely to figure out a way to make copies of those files that won't expire...

this should have probably been limited to a digital release of some sort, where the buyer maybe gets some discount for buying the package of songs... since the 'young' crowd will likely not find cd's to be 'in favor' anymore anyway...

there is no real cash made, since they won't really sell that many copies, hence it is not a cash in........if a kid who is looking for collection of maiden tunes as introduction to the band, this isn't that bas of an intro.....

Also, A Matter of Life and Death is a great album, and the last 3 a strong efforts from the band.....yeah there are some songs that aren't that great, but there are alot of songs on those albums that I dig.....as a LONG TIME fan from back in the killers days......
