Mexican Metal Fans Clash With 'Emos'; 28 People Arrested, 4 Injured

According to La Crónica de Hoy, several hundred Mexican heavy metal, "skate punk" and alternative rock fans joined forces last Friday (March 7) in the in the center of Querétaro, Mexico to confront a group of "emos" (followers of the "emo" subculture, which is short for "emotional") who regularly use the city center as a gathering place. Four people were injured and 28 persons were arrested (22 of them minors) when more than a thousand youths clashed in the area of Jardín Guerrero, Plaza de Armas (front of the Government Palace). Authorities in Mexico are reportedly concerned that similar incidents could happen in other cities, especially Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. An Internet campaign is reportedly being waged to launch attacks against "emos" in other parts of the country, with various web postings portraying emos as "homosexuals" who give a "bad image" to tourists who visit their towns. What's worse, beating up an 'emo' kid because he looks / dresses in a manner consistent with a current trend and could very likely just be trying to be true to himself, or the rest of the idiots who beat the crap out him because he failed to assimilate himself, be like each and every one of them, and adhere to the same type of look and dress that the rest of the crowd had? They could not decide whether they beat the crap out of him simply for being different or for not being the same when the 'metal' kids are trying to be different or rebellious themselves. I think The emo kid was more rebellious for showing up and not giving a damn for what the metal kids thought until he got a fist to the face.
Hey, I'm no saint. I've laughed at some of the emo kids myself. I do not like that look or sound, but that's between my friends and I within our circle. To each their own. There was absolutely no need for this violence or this level of disrespect... and we keep wondering why the media still portrays our choice of music in a negative light... go figure.

They're doing it because the emos follow the trend and look and act unnecessarily upset, and they apparently hang near city centres, giving a bad impression to tourists. The metalheads (and anyone else) don't want tourists seeing their home town as somewhere which follows trends and look and act unnecessarily upset. I'd do the same if tourists started seeing my home as a depressing place just because some trend-jumpers hang around.
Sod that.

The guy (or girl I can't tell for sure) who was beaten up has a great endurance-ability he is good in receiving punches. Still standing on his/her feet afterwards. Good job. Didn't really see metallers versus emo's. But as always we have to label/categorize them....
In my view it has more to do with boredom, lack of eduction, machoism and bad economy (we lost our jobs because of them etc....). The media-coverage will only add fuel to this fire. Says a lot about the state where mexico is in. And young people of course stay in the centre of the town, while there is nothing else to do.
There will be less tourist the coming months for sure now, so if that is what their supposedly fighted it'll richocet.......
On lighter note: The "emo's" sure need no make up for the coming days. Their black 'n blue already........

First off, kicking someones ass cause of the way they look is stupid...people need to grow up. Secondly, ALL music is emotional. This reminds me of back in the day when the hardcore kids used to beat up the thrash kids and in turn beat up the glam kids. Personally, I listen to everything from Pop rock to Black metal depending on my mood. Not so much Emo though unless you consider bands like Thrice, At the Drive-in and Alexisonfire emo...who knows and who cares...its fuckin music!

I listen to a wide variety of music. Everything from Motley Crue to the Descendents to The Dropkick Murphys to Slayer to AFI. This just gives people who are fans of metal a really bad name.

I didnt watch the video but I have the feeling that not many metal fans were involved here. But rather mostly punks. While idiotic comments on blogs and message boards may give metal fans a bad name we are actually about the most decent people youll meet. If metal fans were so 'bad' then why dont you see 'metal' gangs (While many biker gang members like metal the gangs themselves arent based on 'metal culture'), or, at the very least, groups of metal hooligans or however you wanna call them making trouble in neighborhoods. While you do hear about metal fans starting fights its really only amongst each other. And we especially dont go out starting fights with those who are different from us. Thatd be downright hypocritical of us...as many look down on *us* for being 'different'. Personally I could care less about emo music but many of them are quite nice. I do seem some irony here...there are many a metalhead guys who date emo chicks...one reason being that theres only so many metalhead chicks to choose from but theres plenty of emo chicks out there. Just go to a metal concert and youll see theres not too many female metal fans. And you cant tell if some even are since many are there with a guy and just may be there to 'have some fun'.

And I personally have much more in common with an emo chick than your average Abercrombie & Fitch-loving American chick (yes, Im American, so this isnt anything Anti-American). At least wed have similar interests in fantasy, medieval history, sci-fi, bands that we both mutually like (such as Black Sabbath), etc. In Common with most American chicks?
